Attempted Assassination of President

McKinley by Karen G. Depenyou

Yesterday, September
6 1901, after leaving Niagara
Falls, President McKinley went to
an exposition in Buffalo, New
York. After the exposition he
stayed behind and greeted the
public. It is while greeting the
American people that president
William McKinley would be shot
down.
The president took two
shots, one hit his abdomen,
ripping apart his stomach,
pancreas and kidneys. The other
supposedly bounced off the
presidents button and got tucked
into his clothing. The Assassin in
question is 28 year old Leon
Czolgosz. Through some
investigation we have found that
Czolgosz is a polish immigrant.
He grew up in Detroit and
worked as a child laborer. The
biggest discovery we made is
that Czolgosz is an

The recently

a safer and healthier future
involving the meat preparation
industry that up until now has
been unsafe. The Pure Food and
Drug Act was passed by the
president himself.

swing at poor food preparation
and are working to clean the
path for a better meat industry.
The Jungle, written by Upton
Sinclair, depicts the horrid lives
of immigrants in the US, the
unsafe working conditions, and
products of the Chicago
stockyards. Sinclair said,
Chicago stockyards [are] selling

billions of pounds of meat

products each year, including 2.7
billion pounds of fresh meat. Its
awfully easy to grow careless
when producing a large number
of food that is consumed by
millions. The book explains the
sickening routines of the
stockyards, including the use of
every part of the animal. Sinclair
wrote, They use everything
about the hog except the
squeal.
Unfortunately,
although the book shocked
Americans into action, the novel
didnt have the impact on the
daily lives of readers as Sinclair
intended. As he put it, "I aimed at
the public's heart, and by
accident I hit it in the stomach."
But sure enough, the riveting

information and truthful views

reached the attention of multiple
important activists and the
president. Although in contrast to
this, managers of meat stocking
companies claim to carefully sort
through every delivery and that
consumers have nothing to fear.

Devious Liquor Scheme Revealed By Cole Greenberg

There has been a newly
revealed conflict involving the
diversion of tax revenues of whiskey
grips government officials as they try
to decipher who was involved in the
elaborate scheme. First, starting in
St. Louis, the scandal made its way
through Cincinnati, Chicago, and
Milwaukee before the sleazy
politicians driving the operations were
caught. Benjamin Bristow, Secretary
of Treasury, hunted down the
members of the ring and used
freelance agents to conduct raids,
which resulted in the recovery of over
three million tax dollars and the
prosecution of 110 criminals. Five
months later, all operations of the
ring were promptly stopped and the
nation rejoiced as the criminals stood
trial for their actions.

President Ulysses S.
Grant cracked down on those
involved in the ring scandal and
hired John Brooks Henderson as
the prosecutor for the trials, but
eventually fired Henderson for
questioning his interference of
the court cases. Grants moto
concerning the cases was let no
guilty man escape, which he
held true to until his private
secretary was indicted in the
Whiskey Ring trials. Orville E.
Babcock was considered a mild
mannered man and his
colleagues couldnt believe his
acclaimed involvement in the
ring. He is a kind of
intermediator between the

people and the President. His

reputation has always been
good. I never heard it questioned
until these troubles, stated
General Sherman, a character
witness.
Grant ended up
flipping sides in the trial very fast
and testified for his secretary.
The prosecution brought up solid
evidence that Babcock had been
paid 500 dollars by the ring, and
the defense responded by calling
the telegrams "wretched,
purposeless, meaningless,"
dismissing the sturdiest evidence
of the case. Babcock went home
a free man, although it was quite
visible that the trial was unfair
and mostly one sided.

Column: Violent Railroad Strike Leaves Nation in Shock

By Cole Greenberg
The rebellious and
violent strike that rippled through
the country began in Martinsburg,
West Virginia and lasted for 45
days of pure chaos. After laying
down 35 thousand miles of track
over seven years, railroad
workers began to grow angry at
leaders of industry and their
executive decisions as they
decided the workers futures. After
the poor working conditions got
poorer, and 10% wage cuts hit
the workers, they started a small
number of unorganized strikes
that blocked train passage. After
the third pay cut in a year,
workers of the Baltimore & Ohio
Railroad grew outraged at the
capitalists and refused to let
anything pass by train until the
pay cuts were repealed. The
strikers overpowered local militia,

which consisted of fewer citizens

than normal considering most of
them held serious contempt for
the capitalists in this situation.
What originally started
as a spark blossomed into a
forest fire when the Great
Railroad strike spread to
Maryland, Pennsylvania,
Pittsburgh, Illinois, Missouri and
many other places. One striker in
Pittsburgh commented, We will
have bread or blood. We will
wade up to our waists in blood
before we leave." Around 45 days
later the strikers in every city
were suppressed by federal
troops who were sent in by
President Hayes. The ruthless
troops caused many innocent
deaths among civilians and
caused more chaos than

necessary.
When the strike
concluded, one militia member
said that they met a mob, which
blocked the streets. They came
armed with stones and as soon
as we came within reach they
began to throw at us. The total
damages of the strike in
Pittsburgh alone came out to be
around five million dollars. Even
though the strike caused great
losses it also forced the railroad
companies into, establishing
higher pay and insurance for
sickness. The brave strikers
fought for what they believed in,
unwilling to back down, facing the
cutthroat executives and standing
their ground.

Henry Clay Fricks Attempted Assault By Brenna Levitan-Garr

Henry Clay Frick was
almost assassinated three days
ago, on July 23, 1892. A man
named Alexander Berkman
attempted the assassination.
Berkman is a Russian anarchist,
and he is known for his writing
and political activism.
On the 23rd Berkman
walked up the stairs to Fricks
office building and began to
sneak down the halls, looking for
his target. He got in the building
by pretending to be an

breakers. Berkman was armed
with a gun and a sharpened steel
file. He pointed his gun, aimed,
and fired, hitting Frick in the
neck. Berman then lunged at
Frick, managing to stab him with
the file before being dragged
away by Fricks employees.
His motive was simple,
revenge. Berkman was angry;
angry with Frick; angry with what
Frick had done. Fricks refusal to
let union workers into his mines
led to the Homestead Strike of

1892, in which ten men were

killed and more than fifty
wounded. Berkman wanted
revenge for all the people that
were affected by Fricks savage
treatment. He wanted to hurt
Frick, the same way Frick had
hurt the innocent workers during
the Homestead Act. Fortunately,
Frick has survived the gunshot
and stabbing and will be back to
work in about a week. Berkman
has been convicted and found
guilty for attempted murder and
he has been sentenced to
twenty-two years in prison.

Boss Tweed Exposed! By Brenna LevitanGarr

Currently, Tammany
Hall has stolen over $50
million from taxpayers
and citizens.

Has corruption taken

over political officials? It seems
so, especially in New York,
which is run by one of the most
powerful political machines,
Tammany Hall. William Tweed,
or Boss Tweed worked his way
up to become the head of
Tammany Hall, and formed the
Tweed Ring. The Tweed Ring
manipulates and bribes the
public, in return receiving both
money and votes. Tammany Hall
is popular in the low and working
classes because of their fight to
give the poor jobs and shelter.
Tweed also has the votes of
illiterate immigrants by taking
advantage and manipulating
them. He provides immigrants
with jobs despite their inability,
as well as provide them with
necessities.
Tammany Hall has
also been responsible for many
fraud elections. Despite all of
Tweeds illegal actions,
Tammany Hall is still widely
popular due to all of their loyal
voters, especially the Irish. There
is a high Irish immigration

population in New York, and their

ties grew stronger with Tammany
Hall once they were able to be
admitted as members in 1817.
But think about it. Do you want a
corrupted political system?
Currently, Tammany
Hall has stolen over $50 million
from taxpayers and citizens
through corruption! $50 million!
Who knows how much more they
will steal from the innocent
people of New York. Thomas
Nast, a political cartoonist, has
been creating cartoons exposing
the faults of Boss Tweed and
Tammany Hall. In his illustration,
The Brains, he shows the
corruption of Boss Tweed by
replacing Tweeds head with a
money bag. Nasts humorous
cartoons accurately depict
Tweeds behaviors. His cartoons
are so monumental, he was even
offered $100,000 to stop drawing
the cartoons and study art in
Paris. Nast denied the money,
as his goal was set on exposing
the illegal actions of Tammany
Hall and landing some of their
men in jail.

Thomas Nasts
cartoons are slowly bringing
down Boss Tweed and
Tammany Hall. Another popular
drawing Nast created is Under
the Thumb, which depicts
Tammany Hall controlling the
lives of the people in New York.
New Jersey is untouched in the
cartoon, showing how they are
happy living free of Tweed and
his corruption. Nasts cartoons
are easily accessible, and allow
illiterate immigrants to
understand the real situation
behind Tammany and Tweed.
Tammany Hall is a
political machine that needs to
be taken down. Thomas Nast is
going to play a huge part in the
impending downfall of political
machines and Boss Tweed. The
citizens of New York need to
recognize the major issues and
faults of the illegal doings of
Tammany Hall. Tweed better
watch out because Thomas Nast
is going to do something about it.

Who is to Blame for Gruesome Riot? By Andrew Gerbasi

On the recent evening
of May 4th, 1886, a rather violent
riot took place near the
Haymarket in Chicago. For those
who are not up to date with these
events, the riot started as a
peaceful protest endorsing the
eight-hour work day, but soon
the Knights of Labor and the
protesters actions caused a wild
turn of events. Police were
attempting to disperse the crowd,
when suddenly a bomb was
thrown, which was later
described by witnesses as

the crowd with a high trajectory.

The assailant responsible for the
bomb is unknown, but it
exploded and caused policemen
to fire their revolvers into a
panicked crowd, along with the
death of seven of the policemen.
These events have
been blamed on anarchists and
Knights of Labor. There have
been trials on eight anarchist
men, and seven of them were
sentenced to death, while the
last man killed himself in prison.
Was this a fair trial for the

federal government denying our
rights? This past summer,
workers of the Pullman Company
went on strike. The strikers and
boycotters protested the Pullman
Company for lowering wage
prices, but not rent prices.
Eugene Debs led the strike, and
led the workers to shut down
railroads, which caused major
railroad traffic. Debs held a
peaceful rally, but soon it turned
violent with crowds setting nearby
buildings on fire. As more
workers throughout the nation

reliable? As a matter of fact, who
built the bomb from the riot,
whether a civilian or an
anarchist, was never fully
established in court. The
Haymarket riot has been a very
questionable and scandalous
event. With a violent attack on
policemen, and a mysterious
court case behind it, all
Americans should be fully aware
of the danger involved in riots,
anarchists, and the Knights of
Labor.

by the power representing the

The federal
government decided to intervene
with the strike since the strike
went against the Sherman
Antitrust Act and disrupted the

Richard Olney won a court order
that stopped the union strikers

President Grover
Cleveland sent over 2,000 troops
to help enforce the court order.
Eugene Debs was arrested and
he is in jail now. Despite his
efforts to have a peaceful protest,
the violence was inevitable. So
far after the Pullman Strike, other
strikes have not been able to
succeed since the companies all
file injunctions against the unions.
With the conclusion of the
Pullman Strike, our freedoms
seem to be slowly being ending.

The Scandal Behind the Magic By Brenna LevitanGarr

October 22, 1876.

Sunday. -Only two
Sundays more before
the Presidential
election. I am surprised,
whenever I think of it, to
find myself so cool, so
almost indifferent about
it.

Last week the counts

for popular vote came in. The
Democratic candidate Samuel J.
Tilden received 4,288,546 votes.
The Republican candidate
Rutherford B. Hayes received a
lesser amount of 4,034,311
votes. What happened next
remains a mystery to the public.
The only possible way that
Hayes could have tied down a
victory was if he got all 19 of the
electoral votes, Tilden only
needed one vote to win. And
magically, Hayes won. But
whether it was pure magic or
something down right dirty is
unknown. The possibility that
Hayes got all 19 votes is nearly
impossible. Hayes had talked
about it before, but he wasnt
sure whether he wanted to risk it.
Hayes had planned to bribe
voters to insure his success.
Hayes has been paying off the
electoral voters in exchange for
their vote to be guaranteed.

For how long this has been going

on or how much money was
passed along, it is not confirmed.
Also presented by this source
was a page of Rutherford B.
Hayes Diary. On it was inscribed,
October 22, 1876. Sunday. Only two Sundays more before
the Presidential election. I am
surprised, whenever I think of it,
to find myself so cool, so almost
indifferent about it. This made it
painfully obvious that the bribing
has been going on for a long
period of time. Hayes speaks of
this accusation as if he has no
worry in the world, as if he has
got it all figured out. By this time
he probably had most of the
voters hooked. Another source
talked about how William A.
Wheeler, Hayes vice president,
had taken the news. He had said
that Hayes had spoken about not
needing to worry, how it had all
been taken care of. Wheeler
hadnt understood what he
meant until now.

He had said that Hayes had

spoken about not needing to
worry, how it had all been taken
care of. Wheeler hadnt
understood what he meant until
now. He said he couldnt believe
that Hayes would risk something
this big! Wheeler is said to have
acquired medical depression and
anxiety issues and some say he
may resign come fall. If Hayes is
aware, or even conscious to the
problems that his vice president
has acquired thanks to him, it is
unknown. In the instance that
Wheeler stepped down from
office, it is unknown what Hayes
would do. Having been working
together for years you would
think they had a special bond,
but obviously Wheeler was
totally clueless to his partners
wrong doings. As Hayes settles
into office and his scandal is
revealed, how long will Hayes
have before someone does
something drastic and he gets
put back in his rightful place?
How long can Wheeler make it
before taking a stand, can he live
with the guilt? Can Hayes?

Syphilis Hits America

As New Waves of Immigrants Come In By Karen G Depenyou

As many of you are

aware we have on average a
million men and women entering
the US on a yearly basis. These
immigrants bring with them many
diseases that many of us have
never seen before. Scientist are
calling one of these diseases
syphilis. Syphilis is a disease
transmitted through intercourse
of any kind.
When one receives
this they go through three
stages. The first stage is
painless rashes or bumps on the
skin. The second stage is a mild
rash on the abdomen, back
and/or genitals

If left untreated this disease can

cause many complications and in
some cases death. Pregnant
women can transmit syphilis it to
their unborn child. Williamsburg,
Philadelphia has reported two
cases already.

It is said that
Columbuss men brought the
disease to Europe after their
voyage to America although
there have reported cases of
syphilis in Europe dating back as
far as the Roman Empire.

To stop this disease we must

make tougher regulations at our
busiest ports. We must not
endanger the American People.
The health and safety or our
children is threatened anytime
they come in contact with people
carrying this disease. People
need to make sure the person
they plan on having intercourse
with is safe and does not carry
this disease. Check for any
bumps or rashes on skin and
genitals before going to bed with
any man or woman. Be
especially careful with
immigrants.

The health and safety

or our children is
threatened anytime they
come in contact with
people carrying this
disease.

Column: Andrew Carnegie is Not a Robber Baron By Andrew Gerbasi

Has given away over

$300 million of his
earnings away for better
causes.

Andrew Carnegie is
often thought of as a robber
baron. Parts of society say he
does ruthless and hurtful things
to America, but dont consider
everything he has given away to
help people. American citizens
must look at what Andrew
Carnegie has done for this
country, instead of only what this
man could have and could be
doing a better job of.

In my opinion,
Americans should not only
consider a brighter side of
Andrew Carnegie, but also that
Andrew Carnegie is in fact, a
Captain of Industry rather than a
robber baron. Carnegie has done
many things in attempt to benefit
the country, rather than letting
himself die rich. He has funded
many important things such as
libraries and museums, and has
given away over $300 million of
his earnings away for better
causes

Despite his unique

numbers in philanthropy,
Carnegie is often considered a
robber baron because of what he
could have done in better ways,
and probably partly out of
jealousy by people who are not
as rich as him. I believe however
that the benefits Carnegie has
made from his generosity
outweigh what he could have
done better, and people should
realize that he is a Captain of
Industry.
