You may know how rivers have been an important part of American history and how
much they influence your daily life. But here are a few fun facts that you might not
know:

1) Drink up!
Do you know where your drinking water
comes from? Chances are, youre sipping
water from your local river or stream. Sixty
five percent of drinking water comes from
rivers and streams all the more reason to
protect and restore them.
2) Hungry?
Did you know many of Americas rivers
have food-related names? There are two
Apple rivers in the US one in Wisconsin
and one in Illinois the Banana River in
Florida, the Blueberry River in Minnesota,
the Cherry River in West Virginia, and the
Cranberry River in Massachusetts. Theres
the Artichoke River in Minnesota, the Fryingpan River in Colorado, and many rivers,
like Washingtons White Salmon River are
named after fish. Do you have a favorite
food-related river name?

3) Who Owns Americas Rivers?

You do! Rivers that are physically navigable by canoe, kayak, and raft are in the
public domain, up to the high water mark.
Access to the rivers may be over private
land, so you have to find a public access
point, but once youre on that river youre
home free. So get out there Americans,

4) Whats More Powerful Than A

Giant Earth Mover?

Ever wonder why rivers get so muddy-looking during storms? Well, the faster
water moves, the more easily it can pick
up and carry things dirt, boulders, cows,
cars, propane tanks, you name it. This
makes it possible for an innocent-looking
stream to transform into the Hulk when it
gets going fast enough. In fact, a river can
transport more than half of all the sediment it moves in a year in one big storm.

5) River Pirates?!

Think pirates only roamed the high seas?

Think again. In late 18th-mid-19th century
America, river pirates terrorized the Ohio
River and Mississippi river valleys. They
hid out in caves and swamps, robbed,
captured and murdered river travelers,
and sunk boats by drilling holes in their
bottoms. Thankfully, our rivers today are
much safer places for commerce, transportation, and recreation.

Love makes you strong: Romantic relationships

help neurotic people stabilize their personality

It is springtime and they are everywhere:

Newly enamored couples walking through
the city hand in hand, floating on cloud
nine. Yet a few weeks later the initial rush
of romance will have dissolved and the
world will not appear as rosy anymore.
Nevertheless, love and romance have long
lasting effects.
Psychologists of the German Universities of Jena and Kassel discovered that a
romantic relationship can have a
positive effect on personality development
in young adults. Researchers report on
this finding in the online edition of the science magazine Journal of Personality. The
scientists focused on neuroticism --one of
the five characteristics considered to be
the basic dimensions of human personality which can be used to characterize every
human being. "Neurotic people are rather anxious, insecure, and easily annoyed.
They have a tendency towards depression,
often show low self-esteem and tend to
be generally dissatisfied with their lives,"
Dr. Christine Finn explains, who wrote her
doctoral dissertation within the framework of the current study. "However, we
were able to show that they become more
stable in a love relationship, and that their
personality stabilizes," the Jena psychologist says.

The scientists have accompanied 245 couples in the age group 18 to 30 years for nine
months and interviewed them individually every three months. Using a questionnaire the scientists analyzed the degrees
of neuroticism as well as relationship satisfaction. Moreover, the study participants
had to evaluate fictitious everyday life
situations and their possible significance
for their own partnership. "This part was
crucial, because neurotic people process
influences from the outside world differently," Finn explains. For instance, they react more strongly to negative stimuli and
have a tendency to interpret ambiguous
situations negatively instead of positively
or neutrally.

Psychologists from Jena and Kassel (Germany)

found, that a romantic relationship helps neurotic people to stabilize their personality.
The scientists found that this tendency
gradually decreases over time when being in a romantic relationship. On the one
hand, the partners support each other,
according to Christine Finn. On the other hand, the cognitive level, i.e. the world
of inner thought of an individual, plays
a crucial role: "The positive experiences
and emotions gained by having a partner change the personality -- not directly
but indirectly -- as at the same time the
thought structures and the perception of
presumably negative situations change,"
Finn emphasizes. To put it more simply:
Love helps us to tackle life with more
confidence instead of seeing things pessimistically straight away.

The scientists were able to observe this effect in men as well as women. "Of course
everyone reacts differently and a long,
happy relationship has a stronger effect
than a short one," Prof. Dr. Franz J. Neyer
says. He is the co-author of the new publication and chair of Differential Psychology
of the Jena University. "But generally we
can say: young adults entering a relationship can only win!"
For Christine Finn the results contain yet
another positive message -- not only for
people with neurotic tendencies but also
for those who suffer from depression or
anxiety disorders: "It is difficult to reform a
whole personality but our study confirms:
Negative thinking can be unlearned!

Desserts

How to make crunchy cookies of almond.

Preparation:
1.- Heat the oven to 170 heat up
and down without air.
2.- We separate the eggs leaving
aside the clear and reserving the
yolks

Ingredients:
-Two eggs
-A pinch of salt
-150g of sugar
-Zest of 1/2 lemon
-250g ground almonds
-Whole almond

3.- We set the egg whites until stiff

with a pinch of salt as they are
semi-assembled cast sugar gradually while continually beat.
4.- Add the lemon zest and chopped
almonds. With a spatula softly mix
until a smooth dough.
5.- We got wet with some water
lightly fingertips and form dumplings, we placed apart on a cookie
sheet lined paper.
6.- We crush slightly the almond
and decorate with sprinkles.

How to make fruit pizza.

Ingredients:
-1 (18 ounce) package refrigerated sugar cookie dough
-1 (8 ounce) package cream
cheese, softened
-1 (8 ounce) container frozen
whipped topping, thawed
-2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
-1/2 cup white sugar
-1 pinch salt
-1 tablespoon cornstarch
-1/2 cup orange juice
-2 tablespoons lemon juice
-1/4 cup water
-1/2 teaspoon orange zest

Preparation:
1-Preheat oven to 350 degrees
F (175 degrees C). Slice cookie
dough and arrange on greased pizza pan, overlapping edges. Press
dough flat into pan. Bake for 10 to
12 minutes. Allow to cool.
2-In a large bowl, soften cream
cheese, then fold in the whipped
topping. Spread over cooled crust.
You can chill for a while at this
point, or continue by arranging
the fruit.
3-Begin with strawberries, sliced
in half. Arrange in a circle around
the outside edge. Continue with
fruit of your choice, working towards the middle. If bananas are
used, dip them in lemon juice so
they don't darken. Then make a
sauce to spoon over fruit.
4-In a saucepan, combine sugar, salt, corn starch, orange juice,
lemon juice and water. Cook and
stir over medium heat. Bring to a
boil, and cook for 1 or 2 minutes,
until thickened. Remove from heat,
and add grated orange rind. Allow
to cool, but not set up. Spoon over
fruit. Chill for two hours, then cut
into wedges and serve.
