Carrying the idea of the split level to extremes

this atelier house provides different functions
each on a different level. Embedded in a
group of houses it stands out for its individual
shape and facade that reveals the internal
flow of rooms. Seeking inspiration in the theories of Christopher Alexander the atelier house
is build on the basis of the follwing pattern:
ATELIER HOUSE

107 long thin house

159 light on two sides of every room

112 entrance transition
138 sleeping to the east
147 communal eating

The first sketches of the house had some

powerful facades. To keep the impression of
a completey plane surface without cuts by
windows there is a second skin facade made
with expanded metal. This second skin is
almost transparent when looking from inside
the house and is recognized as a continuous
surface from the outside.

Using SketchUp and [Wall by face]

Problems:
- intersections between walls did not
work
- non-vertical walls
could not be edited
(especially no individual openings)

Using the faces of the imported mass model

as work plane. Creating walls on them with
[Create...] command. Editing these components to cut free openings and create curtain
systems in them.
Result: success!

Conclusion
In the end the model of this atelier house consists of drawn vertical walls, as a component
created walls and some walls by face.
In general it is important to use the method that
is best for the desired result. With the given opportunities it is possible to design almost every
form as a building component.

modelling of atelier house

- creating components like

walls, roofs, doors,...
- using the functionality of massing

- fastest way
- method that resembles
drawing on paper the most
- irregular shapes can be generated
by [Edit Profile]
- windows and openings can easily
be created

second-skin-facade

clear cross-section: 80 %

wall mass with void masses

- simple only for vertical walls

- almost every shape can be

generated on individually
choosen work plane
- components can be edited,
openings can be created

- component stays
a mass modell and
cant be converted
totally into a wall,
roof...

useful for: more complex geometry, individual openings,

components off-axis

useful for: simple geometries, orthogonal floors

Mass
- generating a mass with solid or
void forms like extrusions, sweep, blend...
- creating walls, roofs, curtain systems and floors
with command [...by face]

+
- almost every shape can be
generated by interaction of
solid and void forms
- extremely fast way to model
the whole building

mass model with walls by face

- fails with creating more complex forms

(too many dependencies between
single masses)
- non-vertical walls cant be edited
