PASSION FOR THE PROVINCE

ifferent, plural and unique are three frequently used adjectives when asked to
describe the province of Seville in the broadest sense. A difference and a richness
in its way of being marked by the traces of different cultures throughout its history.
These peculiar forms of being and feeling are reflected in traditions revealed with
an unusual force during the Holy Week. Because the Holy Week, name of a religious
event associated with the city of Seville via an inevitable and well deserved binomial,
focuses the eyes of the whole world, on the eve of the springtime, with an abundance
of sentiment, religiosity, art and aesthetics.

Holy Week is one of the most important events of Seville, and this has been reflected
for centuries in the 104 municipalities of the entire province, In fact, in 14 of them, Holy
Week is considered as an event of National Tourism Interest of Andalusia: Alcal de
Guadara, Alcal del Ro, Carmona, Castilleja de la Cuesta, Coria del Ro, cija, Estepa,
Guadalcanal, La Roda de Andaluca, Las Cabezas de San Juan, Marchena, Morn de
la Frontera, Osuna y Pilas. Throughout this guide we will place special emphasis on
them, but without forgetting the rest, where the quality of the brotherhoods is always
increasing.

A Week of Passion that reveals -as well as the feeling and spirituality- the heritage,
the culture and the traditions of our municipalities.

The brotherhoods of the municipalities of Seville have contributed to the enhancement

and glory of the Holy Week. Heirs of a centuries-old devotion, they provide with each
one of the images through the streets of the towns, moments of solemnity, meditation
and faith towards Our Lord Jesus Christ, attracting every year more followers to enjoy
it. As spring blooms, the province of Seville is full of tradition, art, passion, glory
to commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord. A Marian fervor
that transcends borders, a common feeling forged and consolidated with the passing
of the years.

Because our province is a treasure for cultural tourism and one of religious
motivation. Not in vain, there are 14 villages who have declared their Holy Week as
an event of National Tourism Interest in Andalusia. The artistic heritage, the crafts, the
embroidery, the imagery and in general the whole culture linked to the Holy Week in
our towns, are attractive enough to consider this province as really unique.

These brotherhoods are responsible for making sense of the Holy Week forming
processions of penance and accompanying the Sacred Titulars, working right through
the year so that over these days people can enjoy moments that will remain forever
etched on their mind. There is no special municipality or brotherhood, but all together
with a continuing effort, they give us these unique moments.

A religious tourism which opens up a wide range of possibilities and to which we

dedicate our efforts and work to realize specific proposals through routes of the
heritage, crafts, gastronomy or other religious display and events throughout the year,
in the municipalities of the province of Seville.

This guide aims to show the exuberance of the sacred art of the province of Seville, in
addition to paying tribute to the great scenic and monumental treasure of our towns.
The guide is divided into six regions containing all the municipalities of the province.
Within each region, you will find information on each brotherhood by location, with
the most characteristic features. At the end of that information you can find additional
facts about some municipalities, highlighting aspects of their processional routes, as
well as useful information, important sites to visit and the gastronomy of the year at
that time. There are also other interesting sections to better understand the rituals
and customs of this religious event.

But there is another Holy Week, of the other Seville, which displays its colors in the
villages of the province, also in the prelude to springtime.

From the Provincial Council of Seville, we want to continue influencing the momentum
of these our traditions and promote them outside our borders. This comprehensive
guide is a good example of that, because if there is another Seville, there is another
Holy Week too.

Fernando Rodrguez Villalobos

President of the Provincial Council of Seville

This guide has been prepared with a great respect and affection towards the most
important traditions of each municipality. For this purpose, it is been created a
documentary source involving nearly three hundred brotherhoods.
With these lines, we want to thank for their assistance every corporation, municipality,
brotherhood who, selflessly, with much interest and cooperation, have contributed
to the realization of this Guide to the Holy Week in the province of Seville.

THE SOUND OF THE HOLY WEEK: BANDS AND SAETAS
The music of the Holy Week is provided by the Sodalities Cofradas, whose
sounds accompany the processions of penance.
Silence is one of the most characteristic sounds of a procession, although it is
unimaginable without a beating of a drum or a bugle chord.

THE RELIGIOUS FLOAT PASO: MOUNTING, FLORAL

ADORNS, MELTING THE WAX, CLEANING THE
SILVERWARE
Countdown to Holy Week begins in Lent as preparations are intesifying in all the
temples and Brotherhood Houses of each of the Sodalities Cofradas forming
processions of penance.
Normally, it all starts by cleaning the embroidery and the gold or silver ware of the
floats: the silver or golden poles supporting the ornate canopy, the candles, the small
grilles respiraderos on each side of the float Often, the provost is responsible
for coordinating this work for he is the person appointed by the Governing Board
Junta de Gobierno and, among other functions, ensures that everything about
the mounting of the float is keeping the right pace, in addition to ensuring the
preservation of the heritage.
Outside in the street, the foreman capataz is in charge of making la igual in order
to get the best team of bearers costaleros. Another work, prior to the procession
of the brotherhood, lies in melting the wax of the candles. It is a ritual in which they
place each of the candles, one by one, in the candlesticks, once it is fixed to the float.
The flowers are placed the day before the procession, often very differents, exotic
flowers or much more classic native species. For the images of Virgin Mary, white
or pastel shade flowers are widely used: gladiolus, orchids, iris, orange blossoms,
roses As for the floats of the Christ or Mistery floats, the predominant colour is red,
although the species can be the same. It depends on the brotherhood.

Bands like La Presentacin al Pueblo from Dos Hermanas, Santa Cecilia or La

Virgen del Castillo from Lebrija, Nuestra Seora de la Granada from Guillena,
the Filarmnica from Pilas, the Filarmnica del Carmen or Nuestra Seora de
la Oliva from Salteras (this is one of the oldest Bands in the region of El Aljarafe),
among many others, are proper names of this kind of music in our land.
As for the Saeta (literally, arrow), it is a religious song without musical
accompaniment, sung by gender specialists and addressed to each titular image
of the corporations. Lyrics are based on passages relating to the Passion of Jesus
Christ. It is an improvised music you can enjoy only during the Holy Week and has
its roots in Andalusia.
Since 1986 Marchena has been home to one of the most important schools for
learning how to sing the Saeta.

THE CLOTHES OF THE NAZARENO PENITENTS

The titular images in the procession of every brotherhood are accompanied by
the Nazarenos. One of the most important and characteristic elements of this
clothing is the capirote pointed hood, this cone shaped hood is traditionally made
of cardboard, although since some years ago it is also made of plastic grid, much
more practical and durable.
The clothing of the Nazareno is composed of several pieces: robe-tunic, maskhood, cloak, girdle-cord, gloves that change according to the Rules Reglas of
the sodality or brotherhood.
These garments are often made of twill or ruan, a very versatile fabric. Full tunicrobes pieces ranging between 150 to 600 euro, in the case of using velvet.

considered a National Tourism Interest of Andalusia.
Tartessos, Romans, Muslims This land is a rich mix of civilizations and
cultures, which attracts thousands of visitors because of the splendid
cultural and artistic heritage. Today, this area of the periphery of Seville

CASTILLEJA DE LA CUESTA

VILLANUEVA DEL ARISCAL

The most important and representative event is the Holy Week. On Easter
Sunday this village is dyed in two colors, red for the brotherhood of the
Apstol Santiago of the square and pale blue for the brotherhood of La
Inmaculada Concepcin of calle Real. That day has been catalogued a
National Tourism Interest of Andalusia in January 20, 1999.

This municipality of the Sevillian Aljarafe lives the Holy Week in the days
before for this town is responsible for opening the Great Week with the
procession of the Veracruz brotherhood, with Nuestro Seor Jesucristo en
la Cruz and Mara Santsima de las Nieves as titulars. It is a very solemn
procession which brings together many of the faithful devotees who dont
want to miss the unrepeatable and beautiful images through the streets.

So are celebrated the traditional vueltas -go round- in which both

brotherhoods put their respective banners simpecaos on the streets,
singing Sevillanas as a witness. In the afternoon, the titular images of each
one of these brotherhoods form a procession along the streets of Castilleja
de la Cuesta in Paso de Gloria, accompanied by the Brothers.
You cant miss out in this town the old palace of the Dukes of Montpensier,
where the Conquistador Hernn Corts died. It is very important too
the Church of Santiago el Mayor or the Church of Nuestra Seora de la
Concepcin, and the Hermitage of Nuestra Seora de Gua.
Among the most typical sweets are the ring-shaped rolls roscos manta,
the pestios, rosquitos, pionates and special French toast torrijas.

When visiting this village during these days you cant miss out the 18th
century Parish Church of Santa Mara de las Nieves, of an important artistic
value inside. And the Hermitage of San Miguel, where is the Inmaculada
Concepcin is another among the most characteristics sites of this town.
For its wine-growing and producing roots and its fertile lands, Villanueva
del Ariscal has always stood in gastronomy respecting the basis of
traditional cookery adapted to seasonal products. At this time of the year, in
addition to the popular home-made stews and the most popular tost con
huevos, one can enjoy typical sweets like the orange cakes, pionates,
pestios, torrijas or the special flakes hojuelas.

La Campia is a region located at the south of Guadalquivir river. This

area is very rich in cultural and monumental heritage. Through the
monuments of the villages one can read the occupation these territories
had in the past, Roman or Moorish remains Natural contrasts of these
lands give a maximum rich landscape, from large wooden meadows to
plains dedicated to growing. Hence, La Campia has a rich gastronomic
culture derived from the fine raw materials grown on its fields.
This region has 19 municipalities, six of which have a Holy Week classified
as National Tourism Interest of Andalusia. The value of many of the
images forming a procession of penance, these days is really high. This
is one of the regions receiving more visitors during holidays, attracted by
the uniqueness of the area.

ALCAL DE GUADARA

CARMONA

The locals live vehemently their Week of Passion. Good Friday is the big
day for all. Late night -or early morning- the brotherhood of Nuestro Padre
Jess Nazareno, Mara Santsima del Socorro and San Juan Evangelista
goes through the streets of the town for more than eight hours.

Holy Week in Carmona takes

place between Palm Sunday
and Holy Saturday and it has
been declared as National
Tourism Interest of Andalusia
since December 1999. There
are a total of eight brotherhoods
of penance. Among these
corporations should be noted
the Cristo de la Amargura,
oldest processional image in
Andalusia, dated in 1521. The
most characteristic of this
holiday week is enjoying the
image of the floats through the
main streets of the municipality,
mostly narrow and always full
of faithful devotees.

This corporation has a group of armaos -lit. armed people- and jewish
judos escorting the float of Our Lord, they announce on Holy Thursday
morning the Sentencia de Cristo, the sentence of Jesus Christ, and they
are in charge of staging the scene of the Prendimiento (the arrest).
Next to San Roque Chapel occurs the little runs, the Carreritas de San
Juan, moment in which the three floats meet. The Holy Week of Alcal de
Guadara has been declared of National Tourism Interest of Andalusia in
September 2001.
In this municipality certain monuments
should be highlighted such as the
Dragon bridge (Puente del Dragn),
the only figurative bridge in the world.
The Dolmens of Gandul, the Fortified
Medieval Enclosure or the Mills on
the banks of Guadara river, as well
as Santiago el Mayor Parish-Church,
San Sebastin Parish-Church or San
Miguel Church, among others.
Among the most typical dishes is
the cocido de acelgas en colorao
(chard stew in red) or the ajo
meneao, and sweets as the torta
de Alcal (cake) or the bizcotelas
filled biscuits, among others, without
underestimating the well known
bread (pan) of Alcal de Guadara,
rated as one of the best in Spain.

Holy Monday, from San Felipe Church, the brotherhood of Seor de la

Amargura and Mara Santsima del Mayor Dolor makes processional exit.
Exit and entry to the temple are especially difficult because of the ogival,
pointed, double gate forcing the bearers to make a great effort on their
knees.
One of the most characteristic constructions in Carmona is the walled
enclosure. In 1868 was accidentally discovered a Roman Necropolis of
a great historical value. Churches as San Felipe, San Pedro, El Salvador,
Prioral (priory) de Santa Mara, San Bartolom or the Convent of Santa
Clara, are part of the most important historical heritage of this municipality.
It is worth noting typical dishes such as the tomato soup, spinach with
chickpeas or the potatoes en amarillo with codfish. Sweets as the most
popular English cake, the chestnut stew with cinnamon or the torrijas
with sweet wine.

This municipality of the province of Seville is the only with up to 14

brotherhoods forming processions of penance during the Holy Week.
In September 1998, the processions in their entirety were declared as
National Tourism Interest of Andalusia.

This is one of the towns in

which Holy Week has a special
taste of authenticity, history
and true tradition.

cija bends over backwards for its Great Week as shown every year by the
locals adorning the village the best they can in order to make the visitor
feel at home. When on Easter Sunday (Resurrection Sunday) the last of the
brotherhoods make their entrance into Mayor de Santa Cruz ParishChurch, locals do not think Holy Week is over, but that there is one day less
until the next Palm Sunday.

Locals know how to lovingly

care for every detail in order
to this Week of Passion be
different each year while
keeping the old taste. It is
considered as one of the most
romantic Holy Week because
keeping many elements of
nineteenth century. Since June
2001 has been catalogued as
an event of Cultural Interest in
Andalusia.

It should be noted as buildings of religious architecture the Church of

Santiago, Santa Mara, San Juan, San Gil Church and Mayor de Santa Cruz
Parish-Church.
The cuisine of cija is configured with a basis of tradition and recipes
preserved through the ages with each of the civilizations that have passed
by this municipality. The espinacas labradas - carved spinach, the
flamenqun - meat and ham roll, the sopa de gato - soup of cat, olive
oil cakes, the bizcochos marroques - sponge cake, or the pestios are
some specialties of the rich gastronomy of this municipality.

And this Holy week has its own

sounds too, the old Saetas,
furthermore, this is one of the birthplaces of this sung prayer. The
Passion is still staging in Plaza Arriba square, by reading Pilates Sentence,
the Vernica, and the Pregn del Angel -announcement of the angel-.
From Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday which is the day dedicated to
visit the Pasos -floats in the temples, Marchena offers to its visitors many
unforgettable as unrepeatable moments that will remain in their memory.
Among the most outstanding monuments are San Juan Bautista Church,
the Urban Wall, the Arch of the Rose Arco de la Rosa or the Castle
Castillo de la Mota - Palacio Ducal, among others.
In pastry, highlighting the tartas de hojaldre pie pastry, bizcochos
sponge cake, or the butter cakes tortas de manteca. Among the most
typical dishes, the spinach with chickpeas, the marchenero stew, cod in
sauce and tomato soup.

ESTEPA

OSUNA

Holy Week is one of the most important events of every year, and has been
declared of National Tourism Interest in Andalusia since June 2001. The
Carrera Oficial -official route- in Estepa begins at the corner of Cristo
street and runs to the corner with Padre Alfonso street. All the brotherhoods
pass through that common place. So, it is a point of a great interest to
enjoy the processional cortge during all the week.

The streets of this village are fully decorated during its Great Week. Ten
cofradas-brotherhoods form procession to do processions of penance
inside one of the most important celebrations of La Campia region. It was
declared of National Tourism Interest in 1999. One of the leading aspects
of this Holy Week is the particular way they have to carry the floats, not by
men with a sack (lit. Costaleros, bearers) but on their shoulders inside
the float. Some brotherhoods have changed to the traditional style, as the
most of the corporations of the province, although others are still keeping
the old style.

From Palm Sunday, with the Borriquita, the Hermandad de los Nios
(brotherhood of the children) to Holy Saturday with El Santo Entierro
brotherhood, all those visiting Estepa will be dazzled by the solemn
atmosphere in every corner of this municipality.
Among the most important
buildings it is noteworthy the
Torre del Homenaje Tower and
the Torre de la Victoria, the
walled enclosure of the Alczar
(15th century), Churches as Santa
Mara de la Asuncin, Nuestra
Seora de los Remedios, San
Sebastin, Del Carmen or Santa
Clara Convent and the Castillo de
la Mota - Palacio Ducal, CastlePalace and the Casa Palacio
Marqus de Cerverales.
The typical sweet par excellence
is the well known mantecado
special Christmas sweet with
almonds, flour and lard. Rosquitos
de almendras trenzados -ring
shaped pastry with almonds- the
gachas porridge, the honey
flowers, pestios, sopaipas
and hochos.

Oldest brotherhood is La Vera-Cruz, with almost 500 years of history. The

Great day in Osuna is Good (or Holy) Friday.
One of the most important buildings is the old University of Osuna, a 16th
century rectangular building.
Osuna has a wide and varied gastronomic offer. We speak about the
repapalillas, made from eggs, milk, flour, spring onion, garlic and parsley,
or the ardoria, similar to salmorejo vegetable cream. The thistle stew,
beans and peas stew And about sweets, tasty gaotes, crestillas,

LA CAMPIA

The Holy Week of this town has its origins in 16th century when the
Hermandad (brotherhood) La Santa Vera - Cruz was founded among
many other manifestations of public religiosity, as a result of the Catholic
Reformation initiated by the Roman Catholic Church to counteract
the schisms occurring in northern Europe. This corporation offers the
chance to visit a museographic collection with the best valuables of the
brotherhood. After this many others were founded, until the 21st century
when the Cristo de la Paz brotherhood was founded, better known as La
Borriquita .

canopy of the floats through the small doors of the temples by means of
wheels placed under the floats. Handmade embroidery of the canopy of
Nuestra Seora de los Dolores, of the La Humildad brotherhood, are very
characteristic, as well as the beautiful embroidery of the masterly cloak
of the exit from the temple of Mara Santsima del Mayor of Vera - Cruz
brotherhood, made by the Madres Mercedarias (nuns) in 19th century.
Something interesting: There is a team of bearer women (costaleras)
who carries Our Lord image of the Santo Entierro procession.
The Great Week of Fuentes de Andaluca is a part of the unique baroque
architecture by the Ruiz Florindo, highlighting the temples of Santa
Mara la Blanca and San Jos, the convents of La Encarnacin or San
Francisco as well as De la Aurora and El Calvario chapels, these temples
are interspersed in a network of paved streets, 18th century sumptuous
faades and slender viewpoints.
Fuentes de Andaluca has a cuisine of a great value with typical specialties
such as fried or tomato sauce cod, asparagus or cod omelette, spinach
with chickpeas stew, pisto ratatouille, gachas porridge, flowers,
torrijas kind of special French toast, or arroz con leche creamed rice.
Also highlights the very typical entornao sweet made from sugar, flour,
cinnamon, sesame, water and ground pepper used as a colouring to
distinguish from other sweets.

Guadalquivir-Doanas county consists of 24 municipalities, partially

structured by the most important river of Andalusia which colors lands
with a special shade when passing by Seville. The layout of the villages
around these waters means an area of a high environmental content,
including some very fertile lands, a highly productive marsh and
numerous archaeological and monumental sites, legacy of our ancestors.
It is a perfect balance between cultural and active tourism, having as
background the traditions.
During the days of the Holy Week, more than 50 Brotherhoods form
processions of penitence throughout the province, each has its own
idiosyncrasies that lifts a deep feeling and fervour among thousand of
devotees who come each year to enjoy these days.
In fact, the processions of four municipalities are listed in National Tourist
Interest in Andalusia: Coria del Ro, Las Cabezas de San Juan, Pilas and
Alcal del Ro. It is a centuries-old feast very much alive and endowed
with an unprecedented splendor.

ALCAL DEL RO

CORIA DEL RO

The scent of incense, the

perfume that emanates from
the orange trees blossom
and the aroma of typical
pastries of these days, mix
well to anounce, once again,
the Great Week of Alcal del
Ro considered since March
2003 of National Tourism
Interest in Andalusia.

Holy Week in Coria del Ro was declared of National Tourism Interest in

Andalusia in June 2001 because of the most striking moments during the
course of the Hermandad de la Vera-Cruz, when the titulars have to go up
and down a 100 metre long slope once. At the end of the slope they are
greeted with Saetas (popular sacred songs) and applause as the sound is
portraying the solemn moment.

After five centuries of history,

many traditions are still alive.
For example, the Hermandad
-Brotherhood- del Nazareno
still reads the Sentence when
the Procession leaves the
temple.
Good (Holy) Friday night
takes place the ceremony
of the Descendimiento (the
descent from the Cross ), two Brothers dressed as Santos Varones (holy
men) pull out the nails and descend the Christ from the Cross and present
him to the Virgen de la Soledad.
Among the most important monuments of Alcal del Ro is Santa Mara
de la Asuncin Parish-Church. Its interior highlights superb altarpieces of
the 16th century and there is also a mudjar style Tower which can be
seen from many parts of the town. And San Gregorio de Osset Hermitage
(Ermita) of a great artistic value.
Salted dishes such as Codfish in tomato sauce or the fried Pava(hake)
are crowned with most delicious sweets: traditional Torrijas (special French
toast), Pestios, Rosquitos, or the very popular Gaotes.

In the morning of Easter Sunday occurs the Abrazos (hugs) an extra

evangelical scene full of emotion for the faithfull devouts. The Paso -floatof Virgen de la Soledad, now without Pallium - canopy and with a beautiful
colour cloack, goes to the Church to meet her Son Jesus, Resurrected.
The popular ceremony comes to such an extent that the Pasos seem
to be in touch, touching each other, simulating a hug to celebrate the
Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Among the most important monuments of Coria del Ro: The Parish - Church
of Nuestra Seora de la Estrella, The Chapel of San Juan Bautista, the
House-Museum of Blas Infante and the Museum of Andalusian Autonomy.
By Lent one can enjoy in every house the popular Orejitas de Haba,
deformed expression of Orejitas de Abad (Abbots little Ears, literally), in
honor to San Antonio Abad.

One of greatest intensity moments occurs on Holy Fridays early morning.

The Sermon of the Passion takes place each year at the Plaza del Bacalao
(cods square), thus popularly known by the residents of this municipality.
Under a rigorous silence is staged La Sentencia (the sentence) and La
Subida (the ascent) of Jesus-Christ to Mount Calvary, following the biblical
quotations referencing the moments before his death.
This village has numerous archaeological remains. Among its most
significative monuments the San Juan Bautista Parish-Church (18th
century), San Roque Parish and El Cautivo Chapel, of recent construction.
Traditional cookery in Las Cabezas de San Juan is based on a very skillful
preparation of the bread, included as a main ingredient in many culinary
preparations. Also highlights the scrambled asparagus, scrambled young
onions, sweets such as roscos amarillos (ring-shaped fried cakes) with
brandy, torrijas and espoles with bread

Easter Sunday is the most

prominent day of Holy Week in
Pilas. The popular Carreritas
(litle runs / rush) have been
considered celebrations of
National Tourism Interest in
Andalusia since December 9,
1998.
The Carreritas are held on
Easter Sunday and consists in
a symbolic embrace between
the Virgen de Beln -patron
of the town- and the Nio del
Dulce Nombre de Jesus floats
(Pasos). Mother and Son. That
day, the Virgen image is on a
Paso de Gloria, smaller than
usual Pallium - canopy float.
From seven in the morning, a
parade of music goes round
the municipality and young
people strive to take the Handles of the Pasos during the celebration of
this particular custom celebrated in the Plaza Mayor.
Among the most important monuments of Pilas: The Ermita (Chapel) of
Nuestra Seora de Beln, The Parish - Church of Santa Mara la Mayor,
the Chapel of the Sagrado Corazn de Jesus and the Torres (Towers) of
the oil Mill.
On Holy Thursday, is appropriate to eat the popular Calabacitas del
Nio Dios (little pumpkins of Baby Jesus, literally), terrines of candied
pumpkins bought at the Hermitage that day. It is also very traditional
during these days to eat the Garrapiada (caramel-coated dried fruits)
and the Hornazo with hard boiled eggs.

The Holy Week of this town was declared of National Tourism Interest in

SIERRA NORTE

From the days leading up to Holy Week, the residents of this village celebrate this Custom, and have done since the 16th century. It was declared
of National Tourism Interest in January 31, 2001.
Most of the brotherhoods have their canonical see at Santa Mara de la
Asuncin Parish - Church and from there flow through the main streets of
the village.
The Great Days are celebrated from Holy Thursday, the day in which the
Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord is evoked. During these days
we can enjoy superb carvings by important sculptors such as Antonio
Castillo Lastrucci, the artist of, among others, the images of La Vera-Cruz
brotherhood, or Antonio Illanes, whose gouge performed the carving sculpture of Virgen de la Amargura. At the end of the week, we can see the
float of Santo Sepulcro of Santo Entierro brotherhood, of an incomparable
beauty, as well as the float of Virgen de la Soledad.

In Guadalcanal is advisable to wander

through its charming streets and be
guided by the neighbors, to find, for
example, San Vicente Church, Santa
Mara de la Asuncin Church or Santa
Ana Church, the tallest building in the
village, from which you can see some
splendid views.
On the outskirts of the municipality is
the Ermita (chapel) de Guaditoca, patron of the village. From this Chapel
leaves the procession of the Hermandad (brotherhood) del Resucitado.
Among the most typical sweets at this
time of the year, should be mentioned
the gaote, bollitos de aceite buns
with pure olive oil, torta de chicharrones pork craklings cake, and delicious hojaldres puff pastry.

SIERRA SUR

This region is located southeast of the province of Seville. It consists of 19

municipalities where the remains of cultures from prehistory to present
times are still visible, passing through Roman and Iberian times, among
others. The arrangement of the mountains, forming large plains as well as
wild Sierras allowed the shelter of bandoleros popular bandits, between
18th and 19th centuries. In this region, we can find the highest points of
the province.
The contrast of its landscape, the climate, in addition to the culture and
the history, produce the perfect mix for many people visit these lands,
interested in such a heterogeneous past. This is a territory rich in popular
celebrations, but the most enjoyable each year is the Holy Week. Nearly
60 brotherhoods form processions of Penance during these seven days,

LA RODA DE ANDALUCA

MORN DE LA FRONTERA

2004 was one of the most important years for the residents of this town,
since that year the value of its Holy Week was recognized and catalogued
in February as an event of National Tourism Interest in Andalusia. Formerly,
the Pasos floats were on wheels, but over the years the traditional
Sevillian manner was adopted. Processions begin on Holy Wednesday with
the brotherhood of Jesus Nazareno, on this occasion the image makes its
exit hands tied and accompanied by a great silence only broken by the
many Saetas sung by the faithful devotees.

Holy Week of this village was declared Feast of National Tourism Interest of
Andalusia from July 2002. The origin of its processions is over 500 years.
All the brotherhoods form processions of penance towards the Church
Mayor de San Miguel Arcngel, one of the most important temples. On
Good (Holy) Friday the brotherhood of Santo Entierro stands out as it is
oldest of the municipality.

Maundy Thursday comes out the Cristo del Perdn, corporation founded
in the fifties by the former railroad workers. The image of the Lord, titular
of this Cofrada-brotherhood, was the first in the province to be carried by
costaleras women bearing the floats.
Among the most important monuments, emphasis must be put on the
Chapel of the Convent of Siervas del Evangelio nuns and the baroque
Church of Santa Ana.
One of the most typical sweets is the hocho, cake that can be made
sweet or salty and filled to taste, together with other specialties as
pestios, gachas porridge, and magdalenas cupcakes.

SIERRA SUR

Holy Saturday, the brotherhood of La Soledad closes the processions as a

perfect finishing touch to this Holy Week.
Is a must to visit the museum paying tribute to one of the hallmarks of
this village: Lime. Considered by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage
of the Humanity. Other cultural attractions are the Church of San Miguel
Arcngel, the Church of the Convent of Santa Clara, the Church of Nuestra
Seora de la Victoria y el Espritu Santo and the Chapel of Nuestro Padre
Jess de la Caada, among others.
In addition to the authentic aceitunas morunas olives in a homemade
seasoning, should be mentioned dishes as the arroz en amarillo con
conejo rice with rabbit, huevos de codorniz al ajillo quail eggs in a garlic
dressing and the esparragaos en sopa vegetable soup.

TOWNS OF THE
MUNICIPALITY

Here, Roman and Middle-Aged Muslim remains can still be seen as a part
of the rich cultural past of these lands. This heritage combines perfectly
with stunning landscapes with a rich flora and fauna, which is sometimes
surprising because of its proximity to the capital.
In the region of the Va de la Plata the Ruta del Agua Water Route takes
place, which begins in the region of El Aljarafe and ends at the town of El
Ronquillo, where we can enjoy enclaves of a high ecological value.

VA DE LA PLATA

The name of this region comes from the ancient Roman road (Road of
the Silver) crossing the Iberian Peninsula south to north of Spain, from
Sevilla to Gijn. Only five of the eight municipalities of this region have
brotherhoods of penance forming processions during the Holy Week.
White villages, whitewashed houses, beautiful landscapes and a very
particular orography make the passage of the brotherhoods be different,
for the images repeated every year are unforgettable for all those enjoying
this Holy Week.

VA DE LA PLATA

One of the most important and representative events of this municipality

is Holy Week. Locals live intensely this festivity which brings together
more visitors every year, attracted by the religious atmosphere along the
decorated streets of Castilblanco. Since 2011, the celebration has been
advanced to Palm Sunday, day in which, after several years, the procession
of La Borriquita takes place. From eleven oclock in the morning, more
than 150 children holding curled palm plants accompany the image of
the Cristo del Amor en su Entrada Triunfal en Jerusaln. The festive week
ends with the procession of the Virgen de la Soledad in deep mourning,
accompanied by devout women wearing the classic Spanish mantilla
shawl in black as a sign of mourning and respect.

The religious tradition goes with diverse activities of tourism, leisure and
gastronomy.
Among the most conspicuous buildings should be noted the Municipal
Theater Miguel Fisac of a modern and avant-garde design that never
fails to impress the visitors, nor should we miss the Chapel of San Benito
Abad, patron saint of this town, the Church of Divino Salvador or the Chapel
of Nuestra Seora de Escardiel.
The gastronomy is based on traditional dishes with seasonal products. Do
not miss the salmorejo thick vegetable cream, the venteras, migas,
pestorejo, sopeao, ayuyas or the typical Tapas at the bars, a good
chance to try a part of the gastronomy by small portions. In confectionery,
one should taste the pestios, pionates, tortas sobs, tortas de
manteca butter cakes or the rosas roses, whose recipes have been
preserved from generation to generation.

Passion for History

Going back to the most immediate history of the Brotherhoods of the province of
Seville, we can say that the beginning of the 20th century was prolific in terms of
Cofradas-Brotherhoods. Many were founded and in many municipalities numerous
images were acquired and soon became a part of the patrimonial legacy of these
municipalities. In the thirties the outlook changed when the Second Republic is
proclaimed and Civil War broke out in 1936.
Catholic Church in general underwent a high number of attacks endangering its
heritage. Both the Brothers and the faithful devotees played an important role in
safeguarding, even threatening their very existence as they hid the religious carvings
in their homes. All the Cofradas-Brotherhoods suspended their worship for any event
had to be approved and supervised by the Civil Government.
Religious images were burnt, temples were destroyed with all their belongings
inside Almost 40% of the towns of the province of Seville lost their assets which,
consequently, led to a difficult task to recover them. At the end of Civil War and since
the forties, there were perspective changes with the beginning of the creation and
the rising of new Brotherhoods, and since the fifties there has been a resurgence and
a strengthening of the wealth of the Cofradas-Brotherhoods that we know today.
