Chemistry DEPARTMENT

APPARATUS

Four 250 ml Beaker

Glass Rod, or Wooden Stick
Filter paper or old newspaper
A piece of wooden cloth

CHEMICAL

ALIZARIN SOLUTION
0.10 M Potassium Aluminum Sulphate solutions
010 M Barium Chloride Solution
0.10 M Ferric Chloride solution.

THEORY

Alizarin has yellow colour. It is poor dye but

dyes the cloth well when mordent with metal
salt solution. This is because it forms a coordinate bond with the metal iron.

PROCEDURE
Take four 250 ml. Beakers, number the beaker
1 to 4, put 0.1m barium chloride ion beaker No.
3 and Alizarin solution in beaker No. 4 and
about 0.2g of NaCO3 in Alizarin solution.
Heat the beaker No. 1,2 & 3 over a bath
Immerse in each beaker one piece of woolen
cloth.
When fields soak enough solution, remove and
rise thoroughly in worm water. Squeeze out
excess of the water by pressing first against
the side of beaker with wooden stick or rough
filter paper.
Now dip cloth pieces previous dipped into the
alum solution in alizarin solution and squeeze

CONCLUSION

Different mordant produce different colour with

the same dye. Alizarin give red colour with
aluminum. Black violet with Barium mordant.
Alizarin is an Anthraquinone type dye.
