PILI PALAS was opened to the public on the 29th of July

1985. The purpose of the centre is to:
Make people aware of the beauty of the butterfly.
Educate the public.
Stress the importance of conservation.
This pack is arranged in three sections:
Background information for teachers and parents.
Educational guide with suggested links to the National
Curriculum for Wales (2000).
Activities for the pupils and children.

The Life Cycle of the

Small Tortoiseshell

The caterpillar will take about a

month to turn into a chrysalis.

The chrysalis takes about

two weeks before the
butterfly emerges.
The Small Tortoiseshell
and the Peacock hibernate,
that is they sleep during
the winter months.
If you are going to breed some
butterflies then you must have the
correct plants to feed the caterpillars.

Mae yna 42 o wahanol fathau o lynnod

byw i'w gweld yng Nghymru.

There are 42 different species of butterfly

in Wales.

Mae tua 60 o wahanol fathau i'w gweld

yng Ngwledydd Prydain.

There are about 60 different species to be

seen in Great Britain.

Yn ystod yr haf bydd llawer o lynnod

yn ymfudo o'r cyfandir i Gymru.

During the summer many butterflies migrate

to Wales from the continent. Here are the
names of some of them:
- Red Admiral
- Comma
- Camberwell Beauty
The first two come from the
Mediterranean region while the third
comes from Scandinavia.

There are about 2,500 different types

of moth in Great Britain. Most of these fly at night.

Food for the caterpillars
