FOLLOW THE UNKNOWN

Drives are necessary, according to situationist theory, because of the increasingly predictable and monotonous experience of everyday life in advanced capitalism.

In contemporary urban exploration,
there is one increasing method to
correalte the geographical environment
with its society. It is connected with
an understanding of urban space and
architecture unfolding in situations,
because it is produced whithin a
situation of societal interation.
Guy Debords drive (drift) is
an unplanned journey through a
landscape, usually urban, on which
the subtle aesthetic contours of the
surrounding architecture and geography
subconsciously direct the travellers, with
the ultimate goal of encountering an
entirely new and authentic experience.
(Guy Debord, Definitions 52).
With this handbook Follow the
unknown, you are invited to perceive
the urban surroundings in a different
way. Following the unknown means
choosing your way due to the yet
unknown in urban space. This can be

anything, you, yourself,

have not noticed before:
ranging from crossings and
paths to any details. The
unknown is something
totally subjective, ones
youve explored one element
it becomes known. Thus, the
authors would like you to
share your EXPLORATION
and COMMENTS on a
platform to create a new
map of the unknown of
Weimar. You want to join us?

Paying attention to the smaller details, the
lost objects, the signage, the fragments that
make walking a reward in itself, with a
slower pace and an increased opportunity to
revel in the simple pleasures of things.
urban dictionary
Cities become more and more a
panopticom. While the concept of
smart cities implies a sustainable urban
devolpment, the negative impact is a
total surveillance in every aspect of life.
Nevertheless, mathematicians utilize
a variety of this data e.g. to calculate
an empty seat next to you in a subway
waggon.
The authors approach of Follow the
Unknown is not against any technical
progress, furthermore it is a critique
shared with the theory of the situationists
that in the world of advanced capitalism,
the experience of the everyday life
gets increasingly predictable and
monotonous.
While walking the unknown and sharing
your experience you will be a part of a
new way of mapping the city.
