This term is used when there is a recurring prostate infection that may cause

inflammation or pain. Symptoms of this prostatitis are frequent urge of urination, painful
urination, painful ejaculation, difficulty in urination, etc.
c. Chronic Non-Bacterial Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome:
This is the most common form of prostatitis. It occurs in men who are between 35 and
50 years of age. This condition is characterized by inflammation and aches in prostate
and the lower urinary tract. Symptoms of this condition are painful urination, difficulty in
urination, blood in urine or semen, painful ejaculation, pain in the back, penis, or near
genitals.

2. Prostate Enlargement or BPH (Benign Prostatic


Hyperplasia/Enlarged Prostate):
In this condition, the prostate gland enlarges but does not become cancerous. It is
common in the men aged above 50 years. This condition also has urinary symptoms
like difficult urination, frequent urination, lack of strength in the urine stream (weak flow),
urination dribbling, feeling of a full bladder even after urination.

3. Prostate Cancer:
It is one of the common cancers in men. Sometimes it remains in the prostate gland and
doesnt affect other body parts. However, if precautions are not taken, other parts may
get affected. Its symptoms include trouble while urinating, blood in the urine, weak urinal
flow, pain in the genital area, etc.

What Foods To Avoid To Prevent Prostate Problems?


When we have any health issues, we are advised to eat certain food items and to avoid
others. Prostate problems are no exception. The food items given below act as trigger
foods in prostate issues and hence, need to be avoided.
1.

Red meat and processed meat like pork, sausages, beef, etc. should be avoided
as few compounds present in them may increase the risk of cancer.

2.

Spicy food and acidic foods should also be dodged as they can worsen enlarged
prostate problems, so watch out your spices intake.

3.

Avoid caffeine such as cold drinks, coffee, tea, chocolates, as their consumption
may give rise to prostrate problems.

Alcohol can also worsen the enlarged prostrate condition and hence, should be
avoided.

Dairy foods like cheese, curd, etc though considered healthy, should otherwise
be avoided if one has prostate problems as the abundant amount of calcium
present in them may increase the risk of prostate cancer and worsen the
symptoms.

1. Tomatoes:
Tomatoes are good for prostate health as they contain a plant pigment called lycopene
that is a powerful antioxidant. Consumption of tomatoes decreases prostate
enlargement and reduces the risk of prostate cancer by killing the cancer causing cells.
It also controls excess urination that is one of the symptoms of prostrate problem. You
can drink tomato juice daily or use it in a puree form or salads.

2. Warm Bath:
Warm bath is a good and effective home remedy for prostate inflammation or prostate
enlargement. One can sit in a warm water bath tub for half an hour with the water level
up to the waist. Warm bath eases pain and inflammation. It also kills bacteria that cause
prostrate problems.

3. Pumpkin Seeds:
Presence of phytosterols and other compounds in pumpkin seeds helps in shrinking
enlarged prostate. They also contain chemicals that may prevent the transformation of
testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High levels of DHT are associated with an
enlarged prostate. Their consumption eases urination problem that is a common
symptom of prostrate problem.

You can take approx. 80 grams of pumpkin seeds daily in a powdered, baked or in a
raw form. This is an effective home remedy. But be careful if you are having excess
urination as this might worsen the problem.

4. Green Tea:
Green tea is very healthy and studies have shown that it is also effective in treating
prostate problems. The powerful antioxidants and other few compounds in green tea
reduce prostatitis problems, slow down prostate cancer growth and reduce the risk of
cancer. Green tea also helps in controlling excess urination. So, regular consumption of
green tea can be a great home remedy.

5. Basil:
We all are aware of the medicinal properties of basil herb. Studies have shown that
consumption of basil eases prostate symptoms by treating an enlarged prostate. Basil
intake also combats prostate cancer and tumor problems. Basil has anti-inflammatory
properties that reduce prostrate inflammation. You can consume 1-2 teaspoons of basil
juice daily or add it to your recipes as leaves or in a powdered form.

6. Corn Silk:
Corn silk intake helps in treating prostate enlargement and prostrate infections. It
reduces prostrate and urinary tract inflammation, thus easing the symptoms of prostate
problems. You can simmer 6 ears of corn silk for 10 minutes. Then strain and drink its
water. This should be done thrice a week. Another way is to consume its tea. It is an old
and effective remedy for prostrate problem.

7. Water Melon Seeds:


Watermelon seeds are good for prostatitis problem. They contain antioxidants that
cleanse toxins from your body, urinary tract, bladder and help in treating prostrate
problems like prostatitis. You can eat watermelon seeds or boil them in water. Drink this
water daily for 9-10 days. Water melon seeds also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

8. Sesame Seeds:

Sesame seeds are extremely beneficial for prostate health. Sesame seeds help in
treating prostate problems and prevent prostate cancer. You can soak sesame seeds
overnight and chew them in the morning for a few minutes.

9. Stinging Nettle Root:


Stinging nettle is also an effective home remedy for urination problems like painful
urination, frequent urination etc., that are caused due to an enlarged prostrate (BPH).
The use of nettle root does not treat an enlarged prostate, but it eases urination
problems that occur due to the enlargement of prostate.

10. Carrot Juice:


Studies have shown that carrot juice is beneficial in combating prostate problems like
prostatitis and prostate cancer. You can drink a glass of fresh carrot juice daily for
treating prostrate problems. You can combine carrot juice with other healthy juices like
spinach or beetroot juice.

11. Goldenseal:
Goldenseal is a popular herb of the United States that has several medicinal properties.
It is also used in treating acute prostatitis and prostate infections. It possesses antibiotic
properties that remove bacteria that cause prostate disorders. It also helps in shrinking
enlarged prostrate. Its diuretic property also eases urination difficulty.

12. Turmeric Root Or Curcumin:


We all know that turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that help in
reducing prostatitis problem. Studies have shown that turmeric also helps in treating
prostate cancer and reduces its risk. You can boil turmeric root in water and drink that
water after straining. You can add a little honey for taste. Alternatively, you can also add
turmeric powder in milk.

13. Kegel Exercise:

Kegel exercise is good for prostate health. This exercise strengthens the pelvic floor
muscles. It has proven to be effective in treating urination problems due to prostate
enlargement or other prostrate issues.
Before performing the exercise, ensure that your bladder is empty. Lie down and tighten
your pelvic floor muscles for 3 seconds. Then relax for 5 seconds and do 4-5
repetitions. Focus on your pelvic muscles while doing this exercise.

14. Saw Palmetto:


Saw palmetto is a plant whose ripe fruit possesses medicinal properties. It is an
effective remedy for treating enlarged prostate or BPH. It is used to ease urinary
symptoms of prostate glands. Its diuretic properties increase urine flow and ease painful
urination while the anti-inflammatory properties help in decreasing prostrate
inflammation. It can be used in the form of tea, capsules or as a liquid extract.

15. Water:
Drinking more water is suggested in the case of prostatitis as water increases the flow
of urine and flushes out toxins or bacteria that cause prostatitis. Sometimes complete
removal of urine does not take place due to the enlargement of the prostate, and this is
when water aids urination.
