Bruno & Bruiser

Bruno and Bruiser are an adorable pair of nine-yearold shepherd/collie crosses who were surrendered
together to the BC SPCA Nelson branch. They are
from different litters, but are only weeks apart in
age and have been together their entire life. Both
are slightly overweight, but are still very healthy
and love to go for walks and runs. These laid back,
easy-going guys love everyone and would do well
with almost any family arrangement. They have
successfully lived with cats, children, and other
dogs. Call 250-352-7178.

Kaslo Concert Society Presents

Kaslo Concert Societys Jack G. McDowall Memorial

Concert features soprano Nomi Kiss and classical guitarist Rita Dean in a recital of love songs from across the
centuries, including works from Dowland, Sor, Giuliani,
Rodrigo, Sieber,Villa-Lobos, Britten, and others. The concert takes place at St. Andrews United Church, Kaslo, on
Friday, February 13 at 7 pm.
Jack McDowall, the founder of the Kaslo Concert Society,
encouraged Kootenay musicians to make music together,
and this annual event in his honour carries on that tradition by presenting artists with a strong connection to the
Kootenays. Nomi lives in Argenta, teaches in Nelson, and
is a frequent flyer to Europe for concert engagements. Rita
lives in Nelson where she teaches classical guitar and piano
as well as collaborating with other Kootenay musicians.
Rita is also on the faculty of the Kaslo GuitarFest.
Tickets for this pre-Valentines Day concert are $22 and
available at the door. School age children are admitted free
when accompanied by an adult patron. Concert time is 7
pm and further information is available from David Stewart sjdks@kaslo.org or 250-353-7600.

Big Changes For

Kaslo-Kootenay Sufferfest In 2015

Right from the start five years ago, the Kaslo-Kootenay

Sufferfest has been a huge success. But what would make
this great event even better?
With the support of Kaslo Logger Sports, all Kaslo Sufferfest activities will now be centered at the Logger Sports
grounds and Vimy Park. With this move, we not only
acknowledge this fine community facility and increase its
usage, we will have more space for athletes and organizers,
great bleachers for spectators at the start and finish line,
a playground, skate park, shelters and washrooms nearby,
no parking or traffic problems and fewer safety issues. All
of this, the outstanding venue, the focus of activity, and
the drama of personal achievements, will make for an even
greater Kaslo event.

Jazz And
World
Music In
Rossland!
The
Rossland
Council for Arts
and
Culture
(RCAC) Performance Series continues with its third
installment on Saturday, February 7. RCAC is presenting
a show by energetic, eclectic musical group Small World
Project winners of the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award
Through the Performance Series RCAC aims to continuously present a wide variety of high calibre artists with
a variety performing arts styles and this aim is met with
Small World Project. Comprised of renowned instrumentalists Sbastien Dufour (Montreal Guitar Trio), Patrick
Graham (Trifolia, La Nef) and Frdric Samson (exVent du Nord), the trio deploys its arsenal of small string
instruments ukulele, charango, banjolele, strumstick downsized percussions and double bass to deliver a highly
eclectic mix of jazz, world and western spaghetti music.
We are excited to be able to present this performance,
says Theshini Naicker of the RCAC Performance Series
Committee, we always look for groups that will bring new
and different sounds to Rossland and are confident Small
World Project will put on a great show. For this tour, they
will perform songs from latest studio album Less is More
comprised of 9 originals, plus reworkings of Hendrixs
Fire, Marleys I Shot the Sheriff & Morricones appealing western spaghetti tune. Myriad influences converge:
Cuban montunos, Brazilian samba, Italian tarantella, minimalist textures, afrobeat, rock, reggae, Middle-Eastern
rhythmsan exhilarating mix of genres, and a celebration
of music in its many forms.
Small World Project has graced the stages of many international festivals, including the New York Ukulele Festival,
the Tahiti Guitar Festival, the Festival Cultural de Zacatecas in Mexico, the Bayeux Guitar Festival in France as well
as the Montreal Jazz Festival & the Guelph Jazz Festival.
This is their first time touring British Columbia.
The performance will take place on February 7 at the
Rossland Miners Hall. Doors open at 7:30 pm and the
music will start at 8 pm. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance at Out of the Cellar on Columbia Ave.
in Rossland or at the Charles Bailey Theatre Box Office in
Trail. RCAC members get $2 off the ticket price.

Big Lip Sync Contest

At The Capitol Theatre

Remember back in 2011, when the Capitol Theatre held

its last Community Big Lip Sync contest? Remember how
much fun it was? Remember how you wished youd had
the gumption to enter and how youd decided that next
year you would? But next year never came ... until now!
On Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 pm the Capitol Theatre
hosts the Big Lip Sync Contest Revival, a chance to make
good on that long ago resolution to get up on the stage
and (silently) belt out that beloved Tina Turner song! But,
first, there are a few steps required for Nelsons lip-synchers get their acts in gear.
February 13 is the deadline for registration at the Capitol Theatre Box Office, Tuesday - Friday, 12 - 4:30 pm, or
by calling 250-352-6363. Auditions will be held on Sunday, February 15, so participants will need to have their
number selected and prepared by then. Those who make
the cut will be notified and have three weeks to rehearse
in front of the mirror to really get those moves down and
the butterflies under control by the Big Day.
There are four categories: Youth Solo, Youth Group,
Adult Solo and Adult Group. All performances are two
minutes long for youth and three minutes for adults and
must be appropriate for a family audience. The $10 registration fee buys that moment of glory, a chance to win
some fabulous prizesin fact, everyone will go home
with a prize!and a seat in the audience to enjoy the performances of fellow contestants.

The Big Lip Sync Contest is a great opportunity to be

in the limelight and enjoy your 15 minutes of fame in a
fabulous, fun community event that cant be missed. Call
or drop by during box office hours before February 13 to
get more information about the contest and to register.
Dont let another opportunity pass you by.

Winter In The Forest Festival!

Kootenay Lake/Nelson RR 1&3

What else would you rather be doing on a Monday in

February?
Great entertainment, off-beat activities, plenty of food
and good company will give you that much needed dose
of fun in February. The Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society
will have lots of skis in kid sizes if your child would like
to try out this easy-to-learn sport. Bring your old hockey
stick and jump into a game of Four on Four ball hockey.
Try out hot sweet and sticky maple taffy, served on a bed
of snow. Twirl some bannock on a stick and cook it over
the bonfire. Learn winter wilderness survival, make a
wild bird feeder. The woodsman competition has some
fun events that anyone can enter, like the Swede sawing race, water boil and the dot split. Win the prize for
being the first to boil a coffee can of water over a fire you
made with only a hunk of cedar, a hatchet and a handful of wooden matches. At 1 pm catch all the action of
the Human Dogsled Races, teams of three human huskies
and one pint-sized musher will by vying for the grand
prize of $200 towards their favourite charity.
Whats new at this years festival?
If you have ever wondered what the toads are doing in
February or which Kootenay animal really hibernates,
Angus Glass and the Fish & Wildlife folks will answer
those question and others.
And what is a trebuchet? And how far can it launch
a snowball? Find out at the All-in Ancient Technology
Snowball Launch competition at 2 pm.
Entertainment includes a musical production acted out
by giant puppets while you eat your lunch around the
fire. This is dinner theatre like youve never seen! Kiddie
favourite Mr. Mojo will get the small fry (and probably
you, too) giggling and singing. Merryweather, Mountain
Weather and more will get everybodys toes tapping.
Its all free, including your lunch (the festival is sponsored by the Kaslo & District Community Forest Society)
and its up at the Kaslo airport from 10 am till 3 pm, Monday, February 9 (BC Family Day.)
For more information, or to register your human dogsled team, or to contribute a pot of soup or stew, search
Kaslo Winter Forest Festival on Facebook or call Erika
Bird at 250-353-7492 or Donna Cormie at 250-353-9638.

Virtanen Shares World Junior Moment

Its a game that will take prominence in Canadian

hockey lore and for Selkirk College Saints defenceman
Stefan Virtanene.
Stefans brother Jake Virtanen was a key component of the
world champion juniors that triumphed over the Russians 5
- 4 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Monday, January 5.
A natural from an early age: The Virtanen brothers grew
up in the Langley and Abbotsford. Though they played
many sports, it was hockey that dominated the scene. Following in his brothers footsteps, Jake had standout skills
from a young age. Making his way through minor hockey,
Jake ended up as the first overall pick in the 2011 WHL
Bantam Draft when he was chosen by the Calgary Hitmen. At the 2014 NHL Entry Draft at the Wells Fargo
Center in Philadelphia, Jake was chosen sixth overall by
the Vancouver Canucks.
The two brothers were in daily contact throughout
the tournament. They Skyped before games, talked after
games and used various forms of social media to stay in
constant contact. Before the gold medal game against the
Russians, Stefan offered simple advice to his little brother.
I just told him to play the role the coach wants him to
play and he will get his opportunity to get his ice time,
he says. Before the gold medal game I just told him to
be smart with the puck, do the simple things and try to
stay calm. It worked as Jake made several key plays that
helped Canada capture one of its most memorable international victories.

Karen Elizabeth Nelson

I t is with deep sadness that we announce
the sudden passing of Karen Elizabeth
Nelson (nee Surina) on Wednesday,
January 21, 2015, after a short stay in
the Kootenay Lake Hospital.
She was born in Nelson, BC on
March 5, 1944 to John and Lib
Surina, a baby sister for Ken. Karen
came from a large family which
originally settled the Shutty Bench
area north of Kaslo in the late 1800s.
She was also fortunate to have her
maternal family close by as well,
including her grandmother in New
Denver. She met and married the
love of her life George Nelson from
Silverton, and they spent 50 happy years
together raising their family, exploring
the outdoors and running their businesses.
They designed and built their homes in Kaslo and
Mirror Lake, where she lived for most of her life.
Karen was an excellent student and excelled at sports.
Badminton, basketball, track and field and swimming
were among her favourites. She used to tell stories
about swimming across Kootenay Lake on the May
long weekend in her younger years and working as a
lifeguard at Kaslo beach. Karen spent countless hours
outdoors hiking, picnicking, camping and boating
with her family and especially cherished her time
spent at Lost Ledge. She had a great appreciation for
music and used to entertain everyone playing the piano and accordion. Family was everything to her and
she loved getting regular updates on the lives of her
children, grandchildren and holiday visits were very
special times. She really enjoyed playing cards and
board games, bird watching and throwing parties, especially on New Years Eve.
Karen first worked as a telephone operator and then a
bookkeeper for T&H Sawmill, but she was known by
most people in the area first as the co-owner of K & G
Clothes Hanger and later the Kaslo Home Hardware.

Karen was active in the community when

raising her family, with the Kinsmen &
Kinettes, the figure skating club and enjoyed brightening Front Street with
her elaborate holiday storefront decorations. She was a majorette for the
school marching band and felt privileged to be asked to be on the final
voyage of the SS Moyie in 1957.
Kaslo May Days were very special
to her as it often meant the family
was coming home. You could always
find her at the ball diamond watching
the slow pitch tournament along the
first base line. She adored the maypole
dance as it brought back fond memories
as she and all of her children had participated in it over the years. She also had some
great laughs watching her grandchildren in the
egg and spoon and sack races.
Karen, with a lot of help from George, had a beautiful
home that attracted many visitors to view their extensive flower gardens and Halloween and Christmas light
displays. She enjoyed canning almost everything and
her strawberry jam was particularly delicious. She was
very artistic and loved to draw, sew and paint ceramics.
Karen will be greatly missed by her husband George,
her children Klay (Sarah), Kent (Kelley) and Kara, and
her grandchildren Hannah, Sam, Sophie, Ross, Gabe
and dogs, Abbie and Delilah.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to all
who have supported them in so many ways through
this most difficult time. A sincere thank you also goes to
the Kaslo Ambulance Service and Doctors McBride and
Tuvel for their excellent care and kindness.
Karen did not want a memorial service and in lieu of
flowers, please make a donation to the SPCA, one of
her favourite charities, and in memory of all of the
animals she loved and saved over the years.

Lardeau Valley Seedy Affair

Locally adapted seeds, saved by your neighbours, have

several advantages in the garden. Although not all home
gardeners perform viability/germination tests on their
seeds, Ive never found this to be a problem. I just plant
lots, and we seed savers get addicted to collecting lots.
What a surprise last year when, for the first time in a long
time I purchased carrot seeds. There were so few seeds in
the envelope they were almost invisible. As a long time
seed saver, it presented a learning curve in planting!
Come to the seed exchange and presentation on Sunday,
February 8. We will have our home grown seeds to share,
with some exciting stories about them. Presenter Patrick
Steiner will inform us of some of the new work discussed
at the 2014 BC Seed Gathering - Quality Assurance for
locally grown seeds, the new BC Eco Seed Cooperative
(a producers cooperative for organic and ecological seed
growers across BC), and examples from the ongoing work
of seed growers in breeding new varieties for organic conditions, regional adaption, flavour, and nutrition.
Lardeau Valley Seed Savers hosts this free session (with
CBT funding) at the Lardeau Valley Hall in Meadow
Creek, Sunday, February 8, 1:30 pm to-3:30 pm. Coffee
and refreshments are available. As usual when we get
together there is interesting and informative discussion
and a chance to solve some gardening perplexities. Any
LVSS books you have borrowed should be returned at this
session, please. Questions? Call Kate at 250-366-4452.

Amnesty International Presents...

Reel Awareness, the 15th annual Human Rights Film

Festival from Friday, February 6 to Saturday, February 7.
This volunteer-run festival, taking place at the Shambhala Music and Performance Hall at Selkirk College Tenth
Street in Nelson, brings together inspiration and information in a collection of eye-opening, critically acclaimed
documentaries from around the world.
We invite people to come and learn from and celebrate the remarkable work of these talented filmmakers,
who brave threats and danger to capture moving stories
about human rights abuse, resistance, and triumph, said

Our Readers

There Is More To Cabbage

Than We Thought!!

Dear Patty
I was upset by the article in the January 13 Pennywise
entitled Wild Cabbage to Cauliflower as it attempts to
mislead the reader into believing that genetic modification is the same as traditional plant breeding. This is very
untrue! Here is an excerpt from an article that explains the
difference very well:
Q. Whats the difference between cross pollination/
grafting/selective breeding that farmers have been doing
for centuries and genetic modification? Just curious,
because it seems like farmers have been screwing with
genes for a long time now. Joe, NY
A. Youre right, Joe. Farmers have used selective breeding for ages to increase the robustness and output of their
crops and to produce and encourage other desirable traits.
But there are some pretty huge differences between the
techniques theyve traditionally used and the high-tech
ones being implemented today on mega farms that produce GM corn, cotton, soy, and canola (the four crops
largely converted to GM technology so far). Put it this way:
If traditional selective breeding is like two people with two
different sets of genes being paired up by a matchmaker
who thinks theyll have pretty, healthy kids together, then
modern high-tech GM breeding is like Victor Frankenstein slicing superior body parts out of fifteen different
corpses and using them to sew together his powerful, yet
frighteningly unpredictable, monster.

Parks Plans - You Had Your Say!

The RDCK has received the publics feedback regarding

the future of four regional parks through open houses and
questionnaires, and is excited to share the results.
We had great attendance at the open houses we held
in November and received useful information that will
inform the development of draft management plans for
Pass Creek, Waterloo Eddy, Crescent Valley Beach and
Balfour Beach parks, said Sangita Sudan, the RDCKs
general manager of development services. The resulting
plans will guide the operations, development and stewardship of the parks over the next 10 years.
The results of the public involvement concerning the parks
can be viewed on the RDCKs website at http://www.rdck.ca/

Jumbo Update Winter 2015

The last official words we heard about the proposed

Jumbo Glacier Resort (JGR) and development, post October 12, 2014, was when a safety issue was raised about the
location of a day lodge foundation being questionably too
close to an active avalanche path and, that the foundation
was laid in other than the designated place approved by
the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO).
The EAO is within the Ministry of Environment (MOE)
and therefore because of the above concerns MOE Mary
Polak announced a delay to the decision as to whether a
substantial start had been made on the proposed JGR:
NO Jumbo Glacier Resort or YES Jumbo Glacier Resort.
Recently I learned from my government contact person
that the EAO decision makers will now consider:
1. New avalanche information that Governments own
Victoria avalanche experts will have received and assessed.
Also, information will be submitted to them to assess by
Glacier Resorts Ltd. (GRL), the parent corporation of

JGR, which is working with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. As well, GRL will submit material
from their independent expert avalanche consultants.
The original avalanche hazard maps were submitted many
years ago. They are now required to provide more stringent
information, like identifying the one in 200 years possibility.
2. In addition to the non-compliance charges from the
recent past few years, the EAO now needs to judge the
fact that the above day lodge foundation was arbitrarily
relocated without notice to, or approval from them.
Then, on with a decision. However, there are no timelines/deadlines to any of this, so ...
