Tired of its attacks, Bali decided to settle the score. When Bali and Mayavee entered a cave
during their fight, Sugreeva was ordered to keep a watch outside till
Bali emerged .

Time passed and sounds of the

roaring fight wafted to Sugreeva's
ears. After nearly a year' wait
when neither Bali nor the
rakshasa (demon) came out,
Sugreeva thought they had both
been killed. Saddened by his
brother's death, he went back to Kishkindha and
became its ruler and made Tara, Bali's wife, his
queen.
However, Bali returned and seeing Sugreeva as
king, Bali thought he had been betrayed. Though
Sugreeva tried to explain the misunderstanding,
Bali attacked and forced him and his team of

monkeys to flee Kishkindha. Bali regained his

kingship but became an enemy of Sugreeva
forever.

Ravana expelled his younger brother Vibhisana

from Lanka because he tried to discourage
Ravana from fighting with Rama. Vibhisana
decided to go Rama and help him.
Seeing Vibhisana, Sugreeva and the others
grew suspicious, but Hanuman assured them
of his honest nature. Like a loyal servant,
Vibhisana told Rama about Ravana's strengths
and weaknesses. He explained that Ravana
had been granted the boon of immortality by
Brahma. He gave Rama all the details of
Ravana's weapons, soldiers, army, and
methods of warfare. He also told them about
Indrajit's ability to disappear while fighting the
enemy.
All this valuable information helped Rama
decide how to organise his army and fight

Ravana. Finally, Vibhisana suggested that

Rama should pray to Samudra to help him
build the bridge to Lanka and cross the sea.
Rama warmly hugged Vibhisana and thanked
him for all his help. Rama promised to crown
Vibhisana the of Lanka after defeating Ravana
and freeing Sita from his clutches.

Rama and Sugreeva worked on a second plan to kill

Bali. They decided that this time Sugreeva would
wear a garland to help Rama recognise Bali.
Sugreeva then invited Bali for the second time. As
the fight began, Rama shot his arrow at Bali's chest,
but he

didnot die. This is because of a boon given by Indra according to which, any attack from the
front would lose its force before Bali.

Rama then shot at his back and

the mighty bali came crashing to
the ground.
Bali then realised the trap
Sugreeva had laid for him and in
his final moments asked Rama as
to why he had agreed to help
Sugreeva .
Rama replied that he had become too powerful and
arrogant. Besides by making Tara his queen, he
had committed a sin.
After Rama explained, Bali with folded hands begged
for forgiveness and said he was blessed to have been
killed by the noble Rama.

Following Kabandha's suggestion, Rama

and Laxmana came to the Rishyamooka
forest where Sugreeva lived with his army of
monkeys. Thinking they might be Bali's
spies, Sugreeva became worried.

He ordered his loyal minister Hanuman to find out. Hanuman took the form of a Brahmin and
went to the brothers. Seeing Rama he knew that he could not be a wicked spy. At once
changing into his original form he asked the brothers to introduce themselves. When Rama and
Laxmana told him their story, Hanuman bowed respectfully and said he was Vayu's son and
also the exiled king Sugreeva's deputy. On hearing that Rama and Laxmana had
come searching for Sugreeva, Hanuman said it would be an honour to help Rama to free Sita
from Ravana's clutches.

He promised Rama his eternal

friendship, and then taking the
brothers on his sturdy shoulders
he flew to Rishyamooka forest.
