THE CANTERVILLE GHOST

CHAPTER 1
When Mr. Otis decided to purchase the Canterville Chase, everyone told him that he was going to do a foolish thing, as
there was no doubt that the place was haunted. Indeed, Lord Canterville the owner of mansion felt his duty to mention
the real fact to Mr. Otis. He said that his grandaunt, Dowager Duchess, of Bolton was frightened into a fit, when two
skeleton hands being placed on her shoulders also the rector of parish, the Rev ,Augustus Dampier, a fellow of Kings
College had seen the ghost .None of servants stayed with them and lady Canterville often has less sleep. In spite of his
explanation being a man from modern America he decided to purchase the Chase and a few weeks later the purchases
was concluded, and the family decided to shift to Canterville Chase.
The Otis family consisted of six members, Mr. Hiram B. Otis the American Minister, his counterpart Miss Lucretia R. Tappan
a middle aged women with a good profile and the couples have their eldest son Washington, a good looking young man
next to him is Miss Virginia a fifteen year old intelligent girl. After Virginia came the twins, they were delightful boys and
were called The Stars and Stripes.
The family reached the Ascot, railway station and drived a wagon to the Canterville Chase. It was a July evening and
the air was delicate with the scent of pinewoods. With no time the family reached the Chase. They were welcomed by
Miss Umney, the housekeeper, she was there due to the request of lady Canterville. When the family proceeded to the
sitting room, there they noticed a bloodstain. Mrs. Umney narrated the story behind the bloodstain that it is the blood stain
of Lady Eleanore de Canterville who was murdered by her husband, Sir Simon de Canterville, in 1575.After the incident Sir
Simon was never found and his guilty spirit haunted the mansion and said that the stain cannot be removed. On hearing
this Washington cried that Pinkertons Champion Stain Remover and Paragon detergent will clean it up and he cleaned
the floor with no traces of it. Then suddenly weather changed, sudden lightning and thunder flashed, Mrs. Umney fainted.
She recovered from it and warned the family about the ghost and returned to her room, but the family was not willing to
take there foot back.
