SAVOIR-FAIRE 2015

The Ultimate Quiz Bee on Everything European


DATE: March 4, 2015. Registration starts at 5:10 pm; contest proper is at 5:30 pm.
VENUE: CM Recto Hall, Bulwagang Rizal, University of the Philippines Diliman

FULL MECHANICS
I.

QUALIFICATIONS
a. The contest is open to all college students in Metro Manila.
b. Each entry should consist of one (1) team composed of three (3) regular
members and one (1) alternate.
Member replacement: The alternate will be allowed to compete in case one
regular member cannot participate. Replacement will not be allowed once
the contest starts.
c. All three members of each team should be students of the school they are
representing.

II.

QUIZ BEE COVERAGE


The quiz bee questions, formulated by UP EURO representatives, will
cover anything and everything about Europe. This will include European politics,
history, cuisine, literature, geography, tourism, music, art, fashion, current
events, Euro-Filipino relations, and more.

III.

PREREGISTRATION
a. Interested teams should preregister at tinyurl.com/JoinSavoirFaire2015.
b. Preregistration is on a first-come-first-served basis and will open on Monday,
February 16, 2015 and end on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. However, UP EURO
reserves the right to close preregistration earlier than the prescribed date if
and when the maximum number of official teams has been reached.
c. A maximum of thirty (30) official teams will participate in the quiz bee.

IV.

REGISTRATION
a. Official teams should arrive at least twenty (20) minutes before the contest
proper for registration. Contest proper starts at 5:30 pm.

b. Each member should present his/her school ID upon registration.


c. Each team will also be given one (1) illustration board, pieces of chalk, and
erasers for their answers.
d. A registration fee of P150 for the whole team will be collected upon
registration.

CONTEST PROPER
The quizmasters will read the house rules before the start of the contest.
A. Regular Questions and Answers
The contest will consist of six (6) rounds: three (3) elimination rounds,
one (1) quarterfinal round, one (1) semi-final round, and one (1) final round.
Elimination Rounds

The total number of teams will be divided into three (3) divisions, each
division competing in one of the three elimination rounds.
The divisions will be determined by the order of registration, with the
first ten (10) groups comprising the first division, the next ten (10) the
second division, and the last ten (10) the third.
Each elimination round will consist of nine (9) questions in totalthree
(3) easy questions, three (3) average questions, and three (3) difficult
questions, worth 1, 3, and 5 points respectively.
All questions may come in any form (e.g., true or false, multiple choice,
matching type, etc.).
Each question will be flashed on the screen as the quizmasters read it
twice. After the second reading of the question, the timer will begin
counting down. The teams will only be able to begin writing their
answers at the quizmasters signal.
a. Easy round The teams will be given ten (10) seconds to write their
answers on their boards.
b. Average round The teams will be given fifteen (15) seconds to
write their answers on their boards.
c. Difficult round The teams will be given twenty (20) seconds to
write their answers on their boards.
When time is up, teams must raise their boards to show their answers.
Once all questions have been exhausted, the points accumulated by each
team will be totalled.
The four (4) teams who garner the highest number of points from each
division will advance to the quarterfinals. A total of twelve (12) teams

will advance to the quarterfinals after the third division of the


elimination round ends.
Should a tie for the fourth highest total points ensue, a clincher question
will be asked to break it. The same procedure of asking questions and
timer countdowns will apply. Teams will be given fifteen (15) seconds to
answer the clincher questions.

Quarterfinal Round

Once a maximum of twelve (12) teams have advanced through to the


quarterfinal round, their scores will revert back to zero (0).
As with the elimination rounds, the quarterfinals will consist of nine (9)
questions in totalthree (3) easy questions, three (3) average questions,
and three (3) difficult questions, worth 1, 3, and 5 points respectively.
All questions may come in any form (e.g., true or false, multiple choice,
matching type, etc.).
Each question will be flashed on the screen as the quizmasters read it
twice. After the second reading of the question, the timer will begin
counting down. The teams will only be able to begin writing their
answers at the quizmasters signal.

timer countdowns will apply. Teams will be given fifteen (15) seconds to
answer the clincher questions.

Semi-final Round

Once a maximum of six (6) teams have advanced through to the


quarterfinal round, their scores will revert back to zero (0).
As with the quarterfinals, the semi-finals will consist of of nine (9)
questions in totalthree (3) easy questions, three (3) average questions,
and three (3) difficult questions, worth 1, 3, and 5 points respectively.

timer countdowns will apply. Teams will be given fifteen (15) seconds to
answer the clincher questions.

Final Round

Once a maximum of two (2) teams have advanced through to the


quarterfinal round, their scores will revert back to zero (0).
The final round will consist of fifteen (15) questions with no specification
of difficulty. Questions may range from the very easy to the very difficult.
Each question is worth 5 points.
INCORRECT ANSWER. Incorrect answers (including incorrect spelling)
will merit a deduction of 2 points.
NO ANSWER. Blank answer boards, or answer boards with unrelated
symbols like smiley faces or question marks, will merit a deduction of 1
point.
All questions may come in any form (e.g., true or false, multiple choice,
matching type, identification, etc.).
Each question will be flashed on the screen as the quizmasters read it
twice. After the second reading of the question, the timer will begin
counting down. The teams will only be able to begin writing their
answers at the quizmasters signal. The final round timers last only
fifteen (15) seconds.
When time is up, teams must raise their boards to show their answers.
Once all questions have been exhausted, the points accumulated by each
team will be totalled.
Should a tie for the highest total points ensue, a clincher question will be
asked to break it. The same procedure of asking questions and timer

countdowns will apply. Teams will be given ten (10) seconds to answer
the clincher questions.
The team who garners the highest number of points is the SAVOIRFAIRE CHAMPION.

B. Special Questions and Special Prizes


i.
In addition to the regular questions, each round features one (1) special
question sent by UP EUROs partner embassies, cultural institutions and
sponsors. The procedure in answering the special question is different
from the regular question.
ii. There will be no timer in answering the special question.
iii. After the quizmasters read the special question once, it will be flashed
on-screen. Teams are given the opportunity to begin writing their
answers IMMEDIATELY.
iv. The first team who raises and answers the special question correctly gets
the special prize sent by the partner embassy or cultural institution to
accompany the question.
v.
Special questions do not have any point value and will not affect the
score of the team who gets the special prize.
C. Quiz Bee Personnel
i.
Two quizmasters will read the questions out loud twice, give the signal to
begin writing, declare the correct answer, and announce the qualifiers
for the next round.
ii. For each round, designated proctors will monitor the teams to ensure
that they follow the quiz rules. The proctors will also signal the
quizmasters and the scorers if a teams answer is correct or otherwise.
Proctors will raise a green flag if the answer of the team assigned to
him/her is correct and a red flag if wrong.
iii. A three (3)-member technical panel consisting of one (1) representative
from the College of Arts and Letters Student Council and two (2) nonmembers of UP EURO will serve to handle issues on illegible writing,
validity of answers, and complaints regarding quiz bee questions and
regulations.
iv. Two (2) persons from the quiz bee personnel will tabulate the scores
(one to use a large board for transparent tabulation and another to
tabulate on his/her seat using individual score sheets).
VI.

DISQUALIFICATION
The following are the grounds for disqualification:

a. The use of electronic devices during the contest proper.


b. Coaching from the audience. (Audience members caught coaching a team will
be asked to leave the contest premises, in addition to the team being
disqualified.)
c. Any act of intellectual dishonesty, including cheating, copying of answers, or
plagiarism.
d. Beginning to write the answer before the quizmasters give the signal.
e. Failure to raise the answer board within three (3) seconds after the signal is
given.
f. Disregard and/or defiance against the decisions of the technical panel.
The technical panel will decide if a team is disqualified.
VII.

DECLARATION OF WINNERS
a. The team to garner the highest number of points in the final round will be
declared SAVOIR-FAIRE CHAMPION. The team with the second highest
number of points will be declared first-runner up.
b. The team who will be the SAVOIR-FAIRE CHAMPION will receive a cash
prize worth PhP 3,000.00, certificates and citation. The team who will be
declared first-runner up will receive a cash prize worth PhP 1,500.00,
certificates and citation.
c. Each member of the top 12 teams who competed in the quarterfinals will be
given a certificate of appreciation.
