in countrys politics
New Delhi

ing himself as the underdog. It worked wonders for

him. Politics of AAP also
represents a new thinking
that can herald new age politics in India. World over, the
common man is reclaiming his
rights from the established
satraps and seeking his rights to
decide his future. The common man
is no more willing to play a puppet,
and that is something new in Indian
politics. Just as vote bank politics is out,
so is dynasty politics. There seems to be a
trend for the older generation to make way
for their progeny to take over, what they
believe is a family right. Delhi election
result is a decisive vote against them. AAP
has also walked the difficult road by roping
in people from all sections and economic
backgrounds. This has helped break the
glass ceiling of caste-based politics.
BSP getting zero seats validates this
further.

AP has broken new ground

by defeating BJP in Delhi
election. The result has been
nothing short of spectacular, but
more importantly, it marked the turning point in Indian politics. Indian politics is ever-dynamic and nothing validates it more than the landslide victory
achieved by a party that was almost written off just a few months ago. So what
brought this remarkable turnaround in
AAPs fortunes? To understand the significance of this victory, one has to go back to
the run up to the 2014 General Elections.
UPA II was facing anti-incumbency wave
and the people were discontent with the
non-performing government led by
Manmohan Singh. The mood was decisively anti-UPA. The BJP presented Narendra
Modi as a refreshing alternative and people
across the nation voted in his favour. Both
the Congress and BJP have traditionally
counted on vote banks and polarization of
voters, while indulging in caste-based politics. While people voted decisively in favour
of BJP, no harm was done to Indias
secular image. It is a mistaken notion
that the vote for BJP was a vote for
Hindutva, or for that matter, extreme
right-wing ideology. India remains secular
and centrist. It is against this backdrop
that the victory of AAP in Delhi must be
viewed. AAP represents an emerging India
where the youth takes centre stage.
Average age of most AAP leaders and party
workers would range between 35-45 years,
unlike both the BJP and the Congress. The
youth identifies with AAPs non-conventional approach to solving common mans
problems. India is changing, so is its politics and AAP stood for that change.
Many will argue that BJP is the one
that represents the national view and is
better suited to personify that change. This
may not be entirely true. There is no doubt
that the people voted for Narendra Modi
and for what he promised, however, one
cannot ignore the fact that a large section
of the voters also voted against the
Congress that went in favour of the BJP. If
the Modi wave was all-pervasive, then how
does one explain Delhis categorical rejec-

Challenges ahead for AAP

tion of Modi-led politics? What really
worked for Arvind Kejriwal and AAP? First,
his humility. He has repeatedly apologized
to the people of Delhi for the mistake he
and his party had made by giving up power.
AAP promised that if voted to power again,
it would nurture their trust and serve the
full term. This willingness to admit mistakes worked and the people have responded with a clear mandate in favour of the
party. Arvind Kejriwal had to contend with
a strong and highly experienced strategy
team led by Amit Shah of BJP. It was definitely an unequal fight. The BJP threw in
massive resources by way of funds, party
cadres including those from the RSS, the
best of media managers and hyperactive
PR machinery, all working in tandem to
discredit Arvind Kejriwal personally, and
AAP as a party. Kejriwal stayed focused on
his commitment to fighting for peoples
issues rather than responding to BJPs
accusations against him. It was the BJP
that brought all the media attention to
Kejriwal, something he could not have
afforded on his own. Kejriwal, in turn, successfully outmanoeuvred BJP by position-

The biggest challenge before the

party is to offer a stable and mature
government during its entire tenure. For
this to happen, the party will have to
come together with one voice and one
agenda. The AAP will have to adopt a
non-confrontationist attitude in dealing
with the Centre and must work to its
strengths. It must set up short, medium
and long-term plans for fulfilling its poll
promises. Success in Delhi has come
relatively easy for AAP, with the tough
part of governance yet to begin. If AAP
delivers an efficient government, it could
open up the flood gates and sweep the
country in a similar way the BJP did
during the Lok Sabha elections of 2014.
By the time the next general elections
takes place, the nation would have tried
and tested Narendra Modi and the BJP.
In the same way, Delhi would also have
experienced the new government. If AAP
were to come out in positive light, be
rest assured, AAP will sweep the next
General elections, on the back of a
youthful nation.

Bhopal: MP State Bamboo Mission is

imparting free training to bamboo sellers, buyers
and craftspersons in manufacture of various artistic and useful bamboo products to make available
new sources of income to them. Such a training
camp is being held at Banskheri in Bhopal from
February 2, which will conclude on February 11.
As many as 45 trainees are being imparted training by bamboo craftspersons from Tripura.
Mission Director, MP State Bamboo Mission
A.K. Bhattacharya informed that it had come to
the fore at the state-level meeting of bamboo
craftspersons at Bhopal recently that Bansod
Samaj (bamboo craftspersons community) of
Bhopal has confined itself to mere selling and
purchasing bamboos. People of this community
are being imparted training to boost their
incomes. So far, only some of them were learning
to weave bamboo baskets, whereas market of
handicrafts is increasing in the country and
abroad these days. Therefore, skilled bamboo
craftspersons form Tripura have been invited to
impart training. Camp is being held in the locality of the community itself for their convenience.
Trainees are being Rs. 100 per day stipend.
Trainee Gulab Bai said that it would have been
difficult had the camp been held somewhere else.
This is as the well has reached out itself to the
thirsty. Earlier, we only knew to manufacture
baskets from bamboo. Now, we have come to
know how many things can be manufactured
with bamboo. Rekha Sharma Madam, Sapna and
Jitendra Sir from Tripura are training us in manufacturing tray, pen-stand, mat, wall-hanging,
show-piece, vase and other attractive bamboo
products. Trainer Smt. Rekha Sharma informed
that apart form teaching trainees to manufacture
bamboo products, they are also being informed
about giving good finishing. Ganeshi Bai, Kala
Bai, Puja, Sangeeta, Saroj, Poojam, Madhuri and
Anju said they are feeling very good at the camp.
They would continue the skill in future also.

Tata Steel, which is running a 9.7

Essar Steel would rather concentrate on

said. A number of firms including JSPL,
Monnet Ispat and Energy and Visa Steel
are also raising their capacities. Posco's
unit in Odisha is also likely to start production much before the 2025 deadline for
reaching the 300 mtpa capacity. "Even as
the industry is facing a lot of problems

Did BJP failed to read the

mood of people in Delhi?

BJP was speaking of the Modi Tsunami running through the nation, but this time in
Delhi, it ran itself into a Tsunami, entirely built and created by itself. The decimation
of the party at the hands of AAP in the 2015 Delhi election was not so much an
achievement of AAP but a complete failure on part of the BJP that got caught up in its
own hype and perception game. True, Narendra Modi remains a popular leader in the
country and commands the respect of the nation, but in the last nine months, he has
done little for the people of Delhi. The common man has been asking how Modis
achievements in the international arena were impacting his life.

First cracks in BJPs poll strategy:

The Amit Shah-Narendra Modi combine has
been successfully delivering results for the
party, thus far. How did it go so wrong in
reading the peoples mood? There are those
who will try and attribute this
decimation to Kiran Bedi, but the
answers lie elsewhere. Not just Delhi, but
the entire nation has been waiting patiently
for Modi to take steps that the common man
could identify with and demonstrate results
that are tangible and immediate. This has
not happened so far. While the Prime
Ministers stock has risen in the international community, people have been questioning
his silence on critical issues like the rising
voices of RSS ideology and polarizing calls
like Ghar Wapsi and Love Jihad. People
are also questioning his silence on poll promises on removing Article 370 and bringing in
Uniform Civil Code. While these are matters
of concern, the common man is also wary of
dwindling job, rising inflation, high cost of
living, and lack of electricity. He has not seen
any real action on these fronts so far. On the
other hand, Arvind Kejriwal has been voicing his commitment to champion the cause
of the aam aadmi by lowering the cost of living, bringing down the cost of electricity, and
making drinking water available for free.
Very obviously, these have resonated positively with the people.

BJPs PR and Media campaigns

backfired: BJP completely failed to use
their massive media and PR machinery to
drive home the message that the party could
deliver real solutions to peoples problems.
Instead, all resources were deployed to target Arvind Kejriwal and bring disrepute to
him. The massive negative campaign only
helped Kejriwal get more media space than
he bargained for.
Internal sabotage: BJP has lost all its
stronghold seats and this also reflects the
failure of BJP workers. With Kiran Bedis
induction was not supported fully by old
party hands, the margin of loss points to
internal sabotage. How else can Kiran Bedis
loss be explained in Krishna Nagar constituency that has been a BJP stronghold?

BJP needs to urgently review

its internal party structure and
working mechanism.
Is Modis charisma waning?
Narendra Modis political
charisma may be eroding and
that seems to come out strongly in Delhi. This is the same
city where he resides as the
Prime Minister and his personal presence at rallies should
have convinced, at least a section of people. This has not
happened, which means either
his clout is waning or his charisma was overhyped by his PR machinery and media.
Either ways, the damage has been done and
now the BJP will have to rethink on how to
approach the forthcoming elections in Bihar,
West Bengal and Kerala.
Will Delhi election result affect
BJPs prospects in other states?
The result in Delhi is going to impact
BJPs chances in future elections. In Bihar,
the JD(U) is undergoing political turmoil;
TMC is fighting for survival in West Bengal
with party leaders jumping ship on account
of the Saradha scam and Kerala has its own
pressures. In this volatile scenario, the BJP
was poised to capitalize on a weak opposition. However, with the drubbing received in

Delhi, the message that has gone out to

opposing parties is very strong BJP is not
infallible. There have been several voices,
albeit weak ones, from opposition parties to
come together and put up a challenge to BJP.
This result is now going to give an adrenalin
shot to these opposing voices and make
BJPs run that much more difficult. The
result also gives the regional parties, which
felt threatened by BJPs formidable presence, a chance to renew their efforts to stand
up to BJP on their home turf.
Is it curtains for BJP?
Not really. In fact this could well be the
best thing to have happened to a party that
was becoming complacent. Narendra Modi
has to now come out of the shadows of the
RSS and decisively silence the polarizing
forces that have begun to raise their heads.
Next, the government has to fast track proposed reforms and ensure that the forthcoming budget clearly defines actionable policies. The PM has to present a moderate face
to a secular nation. This will help in sustaining a centrist approach while pushing a progressive development agenda that is palatable to all regions of India. BJP still has time
for course correction, provided the party
high command believes in introspection. The
results of the next election will show
whether BJP has put its internal house in
order or whether it is still living in denial.

Why Cong performed so dismally in Delhi?

T

he results are out and Arvind Kejriwalled AAP has broken several records on
the way to claim its stake in forming the next
government in Delhi. This was always a contest between the BJP and AAP, in a so-called
three-cornered fight that had an inconsequential Congress holding the third corner. An
overconfident BJP has been routed in an election, which it was supposed to win outright,
till around December end. Through January,
reality began to set in that perhaps it was
going to be a close contest between the BJP
and AAP.
The results have come as a complete surprise to both the BJP and Congress. The AAP
remained consistent in its belief and the
results validate its claims. So what forced the
oldest political party in India, with two recent

consecutive terms in Delhi, to be

reduced to electoral ashes? What
made the people turn away from
the Congress, that has mostly
been secular and close to centrist? It is obvious that the people
have rejected and voted against
the Gandhi family. It is not just
defeat, but the margin by which
each Congress candidate has
lost, confirms that Rahul Gandhi
as a leader of the Congress party
is not as effective as the party
would have wanted him to. The results in
Delhi also point to the fact that traditional
politics, which is caste based and vote-bank
based, is not acceptable to the younger generation anymore. People are now willing to

explore new leaders with new

ideas that are based on issues.
The Congress has once again
failed to read the changing times
and remained under the mistaken notion that Rahul Gandhi represents the youth, and therefore
acceptable to the masses. The
results have conclusively proven
otherwise.
What is next for the
Congress?
After the drubbing received
in the 2014 General Elections, the Congress
think tank should have done serious introspection and used the opportunity to rebuild
the party, without any Gandhi at the helm.
Nothing much has changed in the Congress.

The party vice president was seen campaigning for party candidates on safe seats and the
organizational reshuffle is long overdue. This
humiliating defeat presents a tremendous
opportunity to hand over the reins to a new
leader and give him the freedom to rebuild the
party from the grass-roots level.
The party is too old with great political
heritage to be written off. The Congress only
needs to be reinvented and the party has to
wait for the opposition to reach anti-incumbency level, in order to stage a comeback. The
party also needs to strike a balance between
the old and the new guard within the organizational structure to represent people across
age groups and income groups. Will the party
workers now discover their voice to stand up
and demand change?

over Rs 100 crore in the state apart from the

dedicated officers who assist companies in
various areas. "We have set up country's

see the facilities that we have there. It is

Seed Congress-2015 held at Agra (UP).
Singh said that apart from increased
productivity to produce more from less
input including water and land, the losses that occur due to droughts, floods,
salinity, biotic and other abiotic stresses
also need to be eliminated decisively
through the adoption of appropriate
technologies. In this context, genetic
engineering holds great promise, he
said. Singh mentioned that international institutional collaborations both in
public and private sector are essential to
introduce innovations and technologies
to the farmers. However such arrange-

logistic hub for IT and Electronics companies with investment of Rs 500 crore which
should be operational in one and half years
from now. "We here had opportunity to visit
NASSCOM incubation centre and from next
month we will start working with them to
set up incubation centre in Chhattisgarh,"
Singh said. The state has surplus power and
will further add 15000 megawatt power generation capacity in the next 5 years, he
added. Chhattisgarh Principal Secretary
Aman Kumar Singh said the government
has got in-principal approval for electronics
manufacturing cluster and will involve private companies once it is finally approved by
the central government. "We have also dedicated 80 square kilometer region for IT companies and 70 acres area has been earmarked for National Investment and
Manufacturing Zone," the secretary said. He
said that state is offering 5 percent financial
reservation in government procurement to
companies that will make their products in
state.

ments should benefit all the stakeholders and faster technology diffusion and
adoption can happen only if there is a
rational regime for technology pricing
and licensing which enables a level playing field and also fosters healthy competition, he said. Singh emphasised that
the superior genetics encapsulated in
seed
combined
with
improved
agronomies shall be the key strategy to
break the yield barriers. He said that in
this direction the private organized seed
industry has significantly contributed
and successfully complemented with the
public sector. Government shall therefore support PPP initiatives for overall
development of the sector, he said. Singh
said that a substantial increase in pro-

ductivity is the answer to achieve food

security in an efficient and sustainable
manner, he said. Singh said that while
agriculture feeds the nation, seeds feed
agriculture. Seeds are a critical determinant of productivity in agriculture. By
embedding various types of values, like
health enhancing benefits, crop protection and water and soil nutrients to
resist adverse climatic conditions, a seed
is eminently suited to increase productivity. Thus, appropriate policy support
for seed improvements through conventional and biotech methods, in combination with improved agronomic practices,
would greatly help in ensuring food and
nutritional security of the country, he
said.

Fans of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have

scrapped plans to open a temple dedicated to him after
he said he was appalled by the idea. Modi tweeted that
it was "shocking and against India's great traditions".
The Hindu temple, with an idol of Modi, was to open in
Kotharia village in his home state of Gujarat on
Sunday. Jayesh Patel, head of the group that built the
temple, said the temple would still open but he would
replace the Modi idol with one of Mother India. "Our
belief will remain the same but there will be no Modi
idol now," he said. Some 350 Modi supporters collected
donations for the construction of a dome-roofed temple,
some 210km (130 miles) from Gujarat's main city of
Ahmedabad. The supporters initially put a framed photograph of the prime minister in the temple, but later
bought an idol for 1,70,000 rupees. "We believe he is an
incarnation of God as after he became chief minister of
Gujarat things changed for the better," one supporter,
Ramesh Undhad, said. There is a tradition of building
temples and deifying politicians and film stars in India,
especially in the south of the country. Tamil Nadu, for
example, has temples and shrines to the late film star
MG Ramachandran, one of its most popular leaders. It
is also not the first time a temple has been devoted to
the prime minister. In January last year, some of his
supporters converted a small Shiva temple into a "Modi
temple" in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

ICC approves Mohit as replacement for Ishant in World Cup squad

he ICC has confirmed that the

Event Technical Committee of the
ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 has
approved Mohit Sharma as a replacement player for Ishant Sharma in Indias
squad for the tournament, which starts
on 14 February. Sharma is suffering
from a knee injury he sustained during
the Boxing Day Test against Australia.
The 26-year-old Sharma has played 12
ODIs in which he has taken 10 wickets.
Any injury or illness-based replacement
requires a written submission to the
Event Technical Committee along with a
diagnosis from a medical practitioner as
to the extent of the injury or illness.
Once replaced, a player may not return
to the squad save as an approved subse-

quent replacement for another injured or

ill player. The Event Technical
Committee of the ICC Cricket World
Cup 2015 is Geoff Allardice (ICC
General Manager Cricket, Chairman),
Campbell Jamieson (ICC General
Manager Commercial), John Harnden
(Chief Executive, CWC 2015 LOC),
Gavin Larsen (Cricket Operations
Manager, New Zealand), Russel Arnold
and Sanjay Manjrekar (independent
nominees). Defending champion India is
in Pool B of the ICC Cricket World Cup

Anand bounces back after

two straight losses to beat
Baramidze at Grenke Classic
ive-time world champion Viswanathan Anand got some
consolation after scoring a regulation victory over David
Baramidze of Germany in the sixth and penultimate round of
Grenke Chess Classic, here. Coming after two straight losses
against nemesis Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Levon Aronian of
Armenia, the victory served as a breather for Anand as this was
also the first win of the year for the Indian ace. It was also the lone
decisive game of the day as world champion Carlsen played out an
easy draw as black against Fabiano Caruana of Italy, Arkadij
Naiditsch of Germany could not cash his chances against Etienne
Bacrot of France while English Michael Adams too gave away an
advantage against Aronian.
With just one round to come things did not change one bit in
terms of standing despite Anand's lone victory. Carlsen and
Naiditsch remained at the top of the tables with four points each
int heir kitty while Caruana remains on their heels a half point
behind. The trio of Aronian, Bacrot and Adams are not too far
behind on three points each while Anand remained on the seventh
spot in the eight-player round robin tournament. Baramidze, after
his fourth successive loss, is now set to finish last in the tournament. The last round promises excitement with Naiditsch, Carlsen
and Caruana fighting it out for the top spot. Naiditsch will have
a tall task on hand as he takes on Aronian while Carlsen will start
as a huge favourite against Bacrot who plays black. Caruana
meets Baramidze but will have black pieces in a must win situation while Anand will play black against Adams. It was another
Breyer variation in the Ruy Lopez by Baramidze termed as the
'lazy Breyer' by Carlsen a couple of days back. Anand in his own
words 'deviated and not improved' upon what Carlsen played
against Baramidze two days back and within five moves got a
winning advantage.

Pakistan have a golden chance to break World Cup jinx against India: Abbas
S

Batting great Zaheer Abbas feels that

considering India's recent dismal show
in Australia, Pakistan has a golden
chance this time to break the jinx of not beating the defending champions in a World Cup
match. Pakistan could never win against arch
rivals India in the last five meetings of the
World Cup. They play against each other in
their campaign opener in a potentially high
voltage contest on February 15 at Adelaide
oval.
"I think Australia, New Zealand and South
Africa will make it to the semifinals. The
fourth team will be either India or Pakistan.
Hence, the first match is very crucial and it
will be really a high voltage contest," Abbas
said. "Pakistan could never win against India
in a World Cup but they have a golden chance

to break that jinx this time. I

have seen India's performance in Australia and their
first practice match against
the hosts yesterday, so I can
say that. I hope that
Pakistan can find their team
combination right as the
injury list is growing day by
day," he told PTI-Bhasha
from Multan in an interview.
He said that India, being the
defending champion, will be
under more pressure than
Pakistan. "India are the
defending champions, so
there will be more pressure
on them to perform as com-

pared to Pakistan," said the 67-year-old Abbas

who was the first batsman to score three consecutive ODI centuries in 1982-83 and that
too against India. Abbas said that India has
an experienced team while Pakistan are a
young side and they have to give their best in
the very first match. Pakistan were hit hard
by injuries. After pace bowler Zunaid Khan,
all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez is also out of
the World Cup due to injury. "Indian team is
experienced while Pakistan has a young team.
They (Pakistan) have fitness issues as well
and team combination is also not settled as of
now. Batting will be weakened in Hafeez's
absence but players are talented and if they
can handle the pressure well, they will win,"
said the former batsman who has scored 5062
runs in 78 tests and 2572 runs in 62 ODIs.

AIB Roast not to be taken seriously, I

think it was in good humour: Anushka
A

nushka Sharma's cricketer

boyfriend Virat Kohli may have
been the butt of jokes during the
controversial comedy show 'AIB
Roast' but the actress feels such humour
should not be taken seriously. "The way I
look at it, I think it was in a good humour.
Not meant to be taken very seriously. This
is my opinion and someone else may have
a different opinion about it and that is the
beauty of a living in a democratic setup,"
she told reporters here. The celebrity
roast, the first of its kind in India which
featured a panelist of AIB members with
filmmaker Karan Johar taking over the
role of 'roast master' to grill 'Gunday' stars
Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor on their
professional and personal lives, sparked a
controversy for obscene language and content. "This has been made unnecessarily a
big issue and it's not needed. There are
many more important things which people
are dealing with and fighting for," she
added. The actress' comments came on the
sidelines of the trailer launch of her debut
production 'NH10' here. The event was
attended by film's director Navdeep Singh
and male lead Neil Bhoopalam
of 'No One Killed

Jessica' fame. "Why has our country

become so sensitive that we can't use abusive words...," Bhoopalam said.

Aamir, producer of
A-rated Delhi Belly
finds AIB Knockout
roast objectionable
amir Khan yesterday decided
to use his celebrity and position
as an actor and a creative person to support freedom of speech. Or
did he? Khan has not yet seen AIB
Knockout, by his own admission, but
he has seen some clips and like all
good Indians, he does have an opinion on it. Khan says he was deeply
affected by the dialogues and most
disappointed. He felt it was a very
violent event and clarified that
violence is emotional or verbal also.
When you insult someone, you are
perpetuating violence. He believes
everyone has different opinions and
should be allowed to have them.
He believes AIB Knockout was a violent show. He scolded Karan Johar
for taking part in it. You see, he is not
impressed by bad language. He only
likes jokes which dont hurt anyone
and if AIB has indeed broken the
law, then they should face the consequences. But nothing should be
banned. According to Khan, if you
dont like someones work, you should
tell them so in no uncertain terms
and appeal to them not to do such
things again. He also thinks an age
lock should exist, so children dont
see the video (someone point the man
towards the parental control software). In his words As a creative
person do I have the liberty? Yes, I
do. But do I have the responsibility?
Yes, I do. As creative people, we have
freedom of speech, but we have to
know how to use that freedom of
speech.
Enough has been said on AIB
Knockout and AIBs apology to the
Archdiocese. My opinion on the matter is that freedom of speech is
absolute. Should AIB have apologised for any of it? Its easy for everyone to sit on their high horse and
claim disappointment at that as
well, but lets see how many people
when faced with a legal battle and a
criminal case, will not cow down.
Far wiser to say sorry, and just get
back to what they were doing. The
roast itself was very brave, given how
politically correct we are and how
certain Bollywood truths (of having
lovers of the same and opposite sex,
casting couches, having low IQ) are
never spoken of in public.

Attack on Christian school: PM

orders crackdown on culprits
New Delhi

A Christian school was vandalised by

unidentified persons recently in the sixth
attack on Christian establishments here in
three months that prompted Prime
Minister Narendra Modi to summon Delhi
Police Commissioner B S Bassi and order a
crackdown on those involved in such incidents. Police and authorities of Holy Child
Auxilium School in south Delhis Vasant
Vihar claimed that the attack was a case of
robbery. HRD minister Smriti Irani, who is
an alumnus of the school, visited the campus and met the school principal. Police
said the office of the school principal was
ransacked by a group of unidentified persons and six CCTV cameras found
destroyed and a donation box was also
missing. After the incident, the school was
shut this morning. "It is not a case of desecration, as per our preliminary investigation," Bassi said, adding, "It is an incident
of robbery." Expressing "deep concern and
anguish" over the rising crime rate in the
Capital, the Prime Minister asked the
Police Commissioner to speedily investigate the recent incidents of vandalism and
ensure that the guilty are brought to book.
Modi also spoke over telephone to Union
Home Secretary L C Goyal and asked him
to "pay special attention to the rising incidents of crime, and vandalism, and to work
towards ensuring the safety and security of
women in the Capital". "The Prime
Minister told me to take strict action
against the perpetrators of such attacks,"
Bassi said after meeting "I strongly condemn the attack on Holy Child Auxilium

school. These kind of acts will not be tolerated," Bassi tweeted. Later talking to
reporters, Bassi said the police is serious in
investigating the cases which have

occurred so far and efforts are on to ensure

such incidents are not repeated. "Prime
Minister Narendra Modi had called me
today at his office and expressed his great

worry on the incident pertaining to Holy

Child school. He enquired about the details
of various incidents which have occurred in
recent months," he said.

Hundreds of child workers rescued in South India

work. Sometimes their wages may be promised to their parents. The authorities said five
men had been accused of supplying the young
people to factory owners. Child welfare officials accompanied some of the children on
Thursday as they were reunited with their
parents in Bihar, one of India's poorest states.
Nearly 200 others travelled back to Bihar in
northern India earlier in the week, police said.

Monitored by cameras

Hyderabad
Hundreds of children, forced to work in
inhuman conditions, have been rescued from
factories in southern India. At least 350 children were removed during raids on leather

tanning and plastic workshops in Hyderabad,

over a 10-day period. They were working long
hours in deplorable surroundings, police said.
Widespread poverty and lack of education
result in many children being pushed into

Police official V Satyanarayana revealed

several of the rescued children were suffering
from skin problems and other diseases. He
said: "We found the children confined to their
work place in inhuman conditions. They were
forced to work for nearly 12 hours a day without any respite." He said the children were
kept in unhygienic and unventilated dark
rooms and monitored by their employers
using video cameras. Any child who stopped

working would be beaten, he said. In 2012 the

employment of children under the age of 14
became illegal - thanks in part to the work of
activist Kailash Satyarthi who won the Nobel
Peace Prize for his work in 2014. But India
still has millions of child workers - a 2011 census put the number at about 4.35 million.
Satyarthi says it is as high as 60 million.
Many parents say poverty forces them to send
their children to work in other people's homes
or in factories. Others are kidnapped from
their families and trafficked to different
regions. One child goes missing every eight
minutes in India and nearly half of them are
never found. A labour welfare official said
raids on factories to check for child workers
will now be carried out twice a month. RV
Chandravan added: "We are taking effective
measures to eradicate the mafia behind bringing children from other states to work in hazardous industries in Hyderabad."
