Activity 1
Use the mark scheme below and work in pairs to grade the 4 exemplar pieces of
work. You must try and place the work into the correct level. Wherever possible you
should use a best fit model, this means that you take an overall view rather than
harshly penalising for one fault. Use the space provided to give specific examples
and write a summary comment at the bottom of the page. You are examining the

Lighting is good
in places, on
the cover, but
not consistent
on the other
two pages, the
contents
appears darker
and the small
images on the
DPS are darker
too. The setting
is hard to pick
out. And the
colours used
are good as
they follow a
theme
throughout of
black, red,
yellow and
white.
The lighting on
the front boys
face is dark on
the cover,
compared with
the bright white
background.
The darker
pictures only
appear
unprofessional,
but they follow
the garage
theme.

It follows the
alternative rock
theme
throughout,
using men and
guitars. All of
the men follow
a similar yet not
too alike style.
On the cover, it
is clear that it
was intentional
that the picture
isnt bright as
an effect has
been applied.
Then
throughout,
there are
pictures of men
at gigs,
therefore this
changes the
lighting, but the
pictures are
always clear
each time.

Overall, it is
very busy on
every page,
using lots of
images.
The cover
picture is edited
quite well to
help the
presentation.
The smaller
images that
have been
resized, have
been done
effectively as
they are all still
in proportion.
However, on
the DPS I dont
think they
should have
added to black
and white
photos with two
normal photos.
This doesnt
follow any
theme.

It sounds
exactly like a
typical
magazine in
the interview
however it is
not easy to see
that it is
alternative
rock. It reminds
me of pop as
theres a lot of
enthusiasm,

exclamation
marks.

effective
because it
shows a lot of
understanding
of the layout of
a good contents

is also good,
with a large title
and smaller
other text below
it.
They do this
effectively
throughout,
except the
words Brad
Spectre should
be slightly
smaller as they
are competing
with the title as
well as the
cover image
due to being so
large.
This has been
done
effectively,
fitting images
together in
proportion on
the contents

using different
fonts and
colours.

The double
