2015 Backyard Chicken Keeping Candidate Survey Response

1. If elected, would you support a Backyard Chicken Keeping program in Duval
County?
Yes
2. If elected, would you support increasing the number of permits allowed city wide?
Yes
3. If elected, is there anything youd change regarding the terms detailed under
Ordinance 2013-415?
Based upon the high-level summary information provided by River City Chicks
regarding Ordinance 213-415, including reference to the Current Planning Division
newsletter article being aware of no complaints made against any of the permitted
backyard chicken keepers, I am aware of no changes that I would make.

3.
If elected, is there anything youd change regarding the terms detailed under
Ordinance 2013-415? Based on the concerns of local taxpayers, I would promote
increasing the number of permits allowed for chicken keeping and also
expand the utilization to mobile home parks, RV parks, etc as long as they conform to
local ordinance regulations. The only thing that should restrict one from keeping
chickens is if it is clearly identified in their lease or association bylaws. To date, I do
not see a problem with supporting this ordinance and its expansion, as I am unaware
of any formal complaints registered against chicken keepers.

1. If elected, would you support a Backyard Chicken Keeping program in Duval

County?
Yes, as long as the performance standards within the ordinance are maintained.
2. If elected, would you support increasing the number of permits allowed city wide?
Ordinance 2013-415-E "establishes criteria and limitations so as to avoid adverse
impacts on neighboring properties and residents and to
provide for the health and safety of the chickens".
The initial pilot program allowed 300 households to apply for permits and on a first
come first serve basis with the caveat that the Municipal
Code Compliance Division would evaluate and review the program after 18 months.
To support an increase of the number of permits I would like to know the outcome
indicators produced by the initial pilot program.
3. If elected, is there anything youd change regarding the terms detailed under
Ordinance 2013-415?
If elected, I will meet with the Code Compliance Division to discuss their review and
findings as well as their recommendations, which will
give me the information needed to review the current legislation and see if there is a
need for program changes.

2015 Backyard Chicken Keeping Candidate Survey Response

1. If elected, would you support a Backyard Chicken Keeping program in Duval
County?
I absolutely support backyard chicken keeping. In fact, Im the only candidate for
Mayor whose family has is part of this program. My wife Molly and I have three
children; Boyd (9), Brooke (8), and Bridget (5) who we have taught to feed and tend to
our chickens. The kids also named our chickens; Chick Fil A, Goldie, Red, and Billy
Bob Jo Jo.
2. If elected, would you support increasing the number of permits allowed city wide?
As a father who sees the opportunity to teach my children important life lessons and
see them have access to healthy food, I support expanding the program. As mayor, I
will listen to all of the people regarding this issue and ensure that the value of this
program is understood.
The responsibility that my kids learn from taking care of our hens is hard to teach.
They also learn how we can be more self-sufficient as a family, they understand better
what it takes to get food on the table, and that they can be in control of where their
food comes from. Its helped us as a family learn to eat healthier, because we think
more about our food and how it arrives at our table. Without our hens, we wouldnt
have the opportunity to talk about all of these life lessons as a family on a daily basis.
3. If elected, is there anything youd change regarding the terms detailed under
Ordinance 2013-415?
Because this program has been an amazing experience for my family, I would hope
