Activity 2:

Discrete Probability Distribution

1. The random experiment is to identify whether 4 students submitted the project on time. Let T event that
the student submitted the project on time and let O the student did not submit the project on time. Construct
the probability distribution of the random variable X number of student/s who submitted the project on time.
2. A factory finds that, on average, 10% of the bubs produced by a given machine will be defective for certain
specified requirements. If 10 bulbs are selected at random from the days production of this machine, find the
probability a) that exactly 2 will be defective, b) that at least 2 will be defective, and c) that at most 5 will be
defective.
3. A multiple-choice quiz has 20 questions, each with 4 possible answers of which only 1 is the correct answer.
What is the probability that sheer guesswork yields 12 correct answers?
4. On the average, 10 people per hour use an express teller machine situated inside a commercial complex.
What is the probability that, during a selected Friday afternoon, 4:00 5:00 pm,
a. exactly 6 people will use the teller machine?
b. at most 4 people will use the machine?
5. The secretary of Obias, Ramos and Associates, a law firm, finds that there are on the average 5 calls from clients
per day. Find the probability that the firm will receive exactly 4 calls on a particular weekday
Continuous Probability Distributions
1. Let Z be a standard normal variable. Find the following probabilities:

b. P ( Z > 1.32 )
c. P ( Z > - 0.25 )
d. P ( -1.44 < Z < 0.00 )
2. Given a normal distribution with = 85 and 2= 25, find the probability that X assumes a value
a. less than 78
b. more than 90
c. between 75 and 80
3. Given the normally distributed random variable X with mean 18 and standard deviation 2.5, find
a. the value k such that P( X < k) = 0.2578
b. the value k such that P( X > k) = 0.1539
4. A normal distribution has a mean = 40 and standard deviation = 25.
a. Find the area above 29
b. Find the area below 36
c. Find the area between 43 and 50
5. The mean weight of 500 male students at a certain college is 141 lb. And the standard deviation is 15 lb.
Assume that the weights are normally distributed.
a. How many students weigh between 125 and 145 lb?
b. What is the probability that a randomly selected male student weighs less than 132 pounds?
