The project was implemented by the band and Green Arrow Renewable Resource Corp, Green Arrow is Canada's first Aboriginal Renewable Energy Corporation and it is owned by Montana First Nation. The grand opening of their 100 kilowatt system was held on August 13, 2014. This js the largest First Nation solar project in Western Canada. With a to‘al of 400 panels on the Administration building, it is projected over $450,000.00 worth of electricity will be generated over the life of this system. It will also reduce carbon emissions that would be equal to taking 15 cars off the road per year. Green Arrow also installed solar panels on 5 homes 01 the reserve and plans to install panels on more homes and on more administration buildings in the future. Chief Rabbit thanks contributions and partnerships built with AANDC’s EcoEnergy program and Enmax to make this project a success. Chief Rabbit is proud to be able to follow through with the role of First Nations people as stewards of the land with this environmentally friendly resource. ‘Sourcos: Input rom Suzenno Uo, hitplsamsoneroe.con/golng-green and ip: ponokanows.comews/272016001.hta SS CANADA'S FIRST NON-GOVERNMENT FUNDED NATIVE NEWSPAPER Hiusiness » Montana First Nation builds healthier homes using green energy Montana First Nation builds healthier homes using green energy admin 9S) 1/101 1 Business Constiuction Housing Resource Development | 0 ‘The Montana First Nation is heading a pilot initiative that is poised to radically change perceptions towards green energy uses in Aboriginal communities, The project, funded by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, was focused on making Montana homes healthier (removing mold), and more energy efficient and sustainable via installing solar panels and efficient furnaces. A commercial element was also incorporated earlier this year to help cut the price of soaring. electricity bills, With the funding assistance of AANDC/ecoBnergy and a partnership with Enmax & Great Canadian Solar, a 100 KW Solar PY (photo voltaic) system was installed on the roof of the band administration building ‘Montana Ftst Nation i using sola panels and other green energy sources to build healthier and more energy ef homes and offices. Atiele by Brandi Morin “L believe the key to a nation’s prosperity is energy independence,” said Montana Economic Development Officer, Barry Wheaton. “We're able to save a substantial amount of money with this system.” ‘The system is the largest hybrid solarirenewable energy system on a First Nation in Western Canada and will generate a savings of $450,000 over the next 25 years. The green energy portion essentially cuts the bills in half ‘Wheaton pointed out the enormous financial benefits of the project. “That's just one building on ‘one nation. So it gives you an idea of the potentirl out there for the solar industry,” he noted. Boasting zero pollution there's also a significant environmental bonus as the project saves on carbon emissions equivalent to taking 15 cars off the road per year. Chief Bradley Rabbit said this endeavour has come along at the right time and it is something that his community has been waiting for a long while, Although there were some challenges along the \way, Bradley said they provided a good opportunity (o learn and helped them to successfully implement this venture. “The great thing about this is we haven't had to use @ whole lot of capital,” explained Bradley. “We started with nothing, just existing buildings. I'm very proud of our economic development ‘group and couneil who have worked very hal. What we've envisioned is starting to come to fruition.” Montana resident Cecil Cunie is one of the recipients of the residential solar pilot and he is happy to_be participating, Prior to the program Currie would sometimes have to use two pay cheques just to pay his exorbitant Epeor bill, “These solar panes are pat ofa green initiative onthe Montana First Nation “IL was really taking its toll” he said, but with the solar panels on the roof of his home and a brand new green furnace installed it's, “so Far, 0 good.’ He also said he’s excited to see the project expand and move forward for the benefit of other community members. It was a bit of a process winding through the application and funding challenges to initially get it up and running, Partnering with joint-venture pariners such as Enmax has also played a part in the programs success. “The ultimate thing is gaining partnerships with the province along with stakeholders, funding agencies and industry to allow even more opportunities to come to the nation to be able to make a difference for the social disparity in our communities,” said Chief Bradley. Along with inereasing revenuie, the project has created instant jobs and has the potential to provide substantial economic benefits for First Nations across the province. Montana is in the process of setting up an Aboriginal renewable energy corporation, Titled GreenArrow, the company will partner with a number of First Nation communities throughout the province. Bradley said the nation seeks to work asa liaison with industry to help incorporate the knowledge and training of the technotogy into other Aboriginal communities. “When a First Nation communicates with anothe* First Nation it’s that much easier to be able to come {o some sort of understanding,” said Bradley. Mold, another aspect of the program, is a big problem in many Montana homes. However, this, issue has been greatly reduced because the program together with a partnership with Horizon Environmental has provided mold certification and removal (raining to four band members. ‘Montana received an award of excellence from AANDC for their Green Housing Project atthe end of May mainly for their residential solar project and mold projects. ‘The band plans to continue to explore and pursue other renewable energy projects in the future including expanding the solar systems to a number of homes and commercial buildings, by Brandi Mori Energycostsaver Inc. nwanonergycostsavercom PETER ROBISON ‘oll Froo: 1-800-679-9068, P:597-352-0969, Dear Chief See ear ease €:403-680-2082 Calgary, Alberta 122 1H2 spot What will acy be? Solar energy is the future; it will provide long tem growth, training with a guarantee of good paying jobs, will provide abundant low cost electricity for existing and potential commercial developments. Our web site is www.energycostsaver.com For presentation to Fort McMurray Airport Authority Solar Solutions for every organization Energy Background “Alberta is one of the lowest cost suppliers of electricity in North America, due primarily to the use of coal fired power plants, and that is about to change. Coal generates over 50% of our electrical needs in Alberta and is gradually being phased out in favour of natural gas, Older power plants are being closed ard are being replaced with some newer coal fired plants that meet much stricter environmental standards, and the rest will be using natural gas. The new plants costing over one billion dollars each will be paid for by Alberta consumers and could lead to @ doubling of our electrical bills. ‘The switch to natural gas, while much cleaner will ako expose consumers to the increasing cost of natural gas. Unlike the pricing of oil, there is currently no global price for natural gas, With the development of liquefied natural gas facilities, prod.cers will seek to export to countries where gas prices are three to four times greater than our current prices In Japan the price is $15.16 per thousand cubic feet and in Sweden, one of the highest at $23.70. Natural gas prices are currently very low in Alberta, but that too is about to change. ‘The Alberta Oil Sands is a large and growing consumer of natural gas. In order to produce two million barrels of oll per day, the Oil Sands consume 4.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day, or about 10% of Alberta’s gas production. Daily oil production Is expected to increase to four million barrels per day within the next five years. Alberta has gone through an extended period of very low natural gas prices, but with increased demand to our export and domestic commitments, it will be readily seen that our cost of electricity is going to see a substantial increase in price. Depletion Seldom discussed and of critical importance is the less of about 4 million barrels of oil world wide per day through depletion, Higher prices and new technologies have allowed developers to explott supplies that were previously either not technologically feasible or too expensive. These new supplies, while substantial, can barely keep up with worldwide depetion rates. Supplies are shrinking at a time when demand from places like China and India are exploding. The North Sea olf discovery allowed Britain to become self sufficient and an exporter of oll to Europe. At ‘the depletion rate of 8% annually, tis now unable t> supply the needs of Britain who once again is an oll importer. With further exploration, new discoveries are possible, but always at a higher cost, and seldom enough to replace the supply that has been lost. As major conventional oil discoveries have been shrinking in size and frequency, the world is turning to non conventional and expensive alternatives, such as the Oil ‘Sands. The Oil Sands now supply 80% of Alberta's total production, Natural Gas is a finite resource and the key ingredient for all of our energy supplies; it will get a lot more expensive. Alternative energy sources are being developed, but in the short term cannot replace expensive fossil fuels. As supplies shrink and the world is faced with increasing costs, new alternatives will be developed. Wind, Biomass, Co-generation, Hydro, Geothermal aad Solar are some of the well known alternatives currently in use. Of all of the known alternatives, only solar has a practical application for a single user. A solar array can bbe designed to fit any sized roof top or fand area, and may supply all or part of the user’s annual electrical consumption. Once installed, the power it generates will eliminate that portion of the electrical bill. The savings will | continue for many years, or as long as the need Is there. Questions to be addres: How much will it cost? Where will the money come ‘rom? How long will it take to get the investment back? What about maintenance? How can we utilize the tax benefits? How long is the warranty? How soon can it be installed? | ‘We can address these and any other questions you may have. Partial Solution to IED Deaths In 2009, there were 7228 improvised explosive device attacks in Afghanistan. Of the $12 foreign soldiers killed in 2009, 280 of those were killed by IEDs. in 2010, IED attacks in ‘Afghanistan wounded 3,366 USS. soldiers, which is nearly 60% of the total IED wounded since the start of the war. Canada does not release a breakdown of its casualty information. Iraq is one of the most heavily mined nations in the world, in 2003 it was estimated that were over 10 million mines already in the ground. ENERGYCOSTSAVER BUSINESS PLAN Table of Contents Description Marketing Opportunities Distribution Target Market Description: Energycostsaver Inc is in the business of developing commercial dual axis solar tracking systems for multiple applications, Available systems include ground mount, roof top and mobile units. Our solar tracking frames are 40% more efficient than the fixed frame systems used in most installations, The frame is the component that supports the solar panel, and directs the panel towards the Sun in order to generate electricity, Maximum efficiency is achieved when the panel is directly facing the Sun, which in fixed freme systems is for a very limited time each day. By contrast the Energycostsaver dual axis tracking frame rotates from east to west throughout the day, and north /south seasonally, allowing the solar panels to always be facing the Sun for ‘maximum etticiency. Our roof top tracking frame is the only commercially available system in North America, Marketing Opportunities: Less than 5% of Alberta’s electricity is produced by alternative energy. Over 50% Is generated from coal fited power plants, with some of the newer plants using natural gas, Alberta’s power generation is at capacity and unable to meet the expected doubling of demand over the next 20 years. To meet the demand, billions of dollars will have to be spent on new power generation, resulting in huge increase in the cost of electricity. The Maxim Power Plant expansion alone, is expected to cost $1.7 billion, and is one of the many that will be needed. As the costs increase, business owners will look for ways to mitigate this essential and costly operating expense. They need look no further than the Energycostsaver dual axis tracking system. Generating electricity at a lower cost than current Alberta regulated power rates, our solar systems, will provide lower power bills and eliminate any future rate increases. Distribution: Energycostsaver will complete a roof top and ground mount installation to be used as demonstration sites, for the network of distributors who will be attracted to this new innovation in solar technology. By accessing existing solar distribution channels we will quickly expand our market for the roof mount system. Target Market: Although not suitable for residential installations, there are three primary markets for which our systems will be ideally suited. Flat roofs found on most warehouses, schools, shopping centres, Automobile Dealerships and Big Box stores. Solar Farms on or off grid, to service First Nations Reserves, Northern Oil Installations and Large Farming Operations. Mobile Systems for temporary locations, Small Farms and Acreages. ‘The largest user in the world of solar power is Walmart, who have discovered a practical use for their many roof tops throughout the world. Theyare closely followed by Ikea who have committed $2.5 Billion to alternative energy to meet their own power needs. The Green Revolution has just started and Energycostsaver will be in the forefront with innovative solar solutions A Case for Solar Power Long term, Canacla must build more power plants and more transmission lines, which usually involves long and difficult negotiations with land owners. Before any work begins there is a requirement for regulatory approvals, environmental studies and the inevitable legal challenges. New environmental regulations have made future power plants much more expensive to develop with a resulting increase in power rates. Although more efficient, the new power plants will continue to add to our carbon footprint. Many of the new power plants will bbe in remote areas, which results in a loss of electrical power before it gets to the intended user, TransAlta has stated that they will have to spend between 10 to 15 billion dollars over the next 20 years to keep up with the growing demand for electricity in Alberta. All of the foregoing suggests consideration be given to alternatives. An alternative that would be welcomed by the majority of Canadians, that would be environmentally friendly, would face fewer if any legal challenges and would be locally generated. The cost should to be competitive with coal and natural gas power plants. Adopting such a strategy, would demonstrate to the world that we take very seriously our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint ‘The energy source that meets all of the above is ground mount solar farms. Most communities have surplus or unused land which could support solar farms that would create income and employment opportunities for Canadians. For stewards of the onvironment, it meats the criterion of sustainability, reducing the carbon footprint and protecting the environment. Any land area unsuitable for agriculture or of little commercial value, can be turned into a valuable resource. The other large and underutilized area is the roof tops of houses and commercial buildings that could eliminate the need for some of the planned power plants. Since 40% of all electricity generated in Canada is used in buildings, utilizing roof tops will be a big step toward our commitment to clean energy. Canada imports $4 billion of fruit and vegetables every year. The obvious constraints to our ‘own production are the weather and short growing season. Hydroponic Green Houses operate 12 months of the year, but until now large scale Hydroponic Green Houses were not viable due to the high cost of electricity. Solar Power can change that, and can make Canada self sufficient, in the production of many fruits and vegetables. Energycostsaver Inc,, an Alberta Corporation, using the Suntracker solar tracking frame is capable of providing a ground mount system which is 40% more efficient than fixed frames currently in use, We can provide the entire installation or the tracking frame to other installers. ‘The Suntracker is the latest in solar technology and was developed by Energycostsaver Inc. www.energycostsaver.com
