society except for society that have family member with down syndrome. In addition, children
with down syndrome need to be concern because they have their own right to be loved, to
live, to educated and mingle with society. The main objective of this research is to study the

Introduction

1.1

Importance of Corporate Identity

Corporate identity is something that we refer to when we talk about our own identity which is
show our differentiate from others people. Its show individuals or an organization personality
and character that represent their own identity which we express through conversation,
listening and behaviour.
The concept of corporate identity can be divide into 3 which are corporate design, corporate
communication and corporate behaviour. Corporate design include the design of logo,
uniforms, building design, corporate colour and something that related with design thats use
to tell people about 'who are we'. It is just an identity that's use to represent the business,
organization or identity. Advertising is one of the corporate communication whose purpose to
inform the society or customers about services and products of an organization. For
example, if the organization want to deliver some messages to society, the can use
brochure, flyers and poster as a medium to deliver the messages.
Many advertisements has been designed to generate increased use of those products and
services through the creation and strengthening of the company's image and customer
loyalty. Besides television, there are a lots of medium that can be used to deliver the
messages which include radio, movies, magazine, video games, newspaper, billboards and
internet. Internet is one of the medium that people usually use because nowadays people is
preferred to reading in online version. Corporate common behaviour, manner and reaction
in definite decision cases can be called as corporate behaviour. In the context, there is how
should company react against various situations because the behaviour of an organisation is
consider as a single body.

Business owner should know that a logo is the main importance to represent a strong
corporate identity in an organization. Some of business owner think that logo is not important
and something that just wasting the time. According to Christiamo (2012), corporate identity
sends a strong message to the clients about who you are. It proves a feeling trust and
confidence that encourages them to do business with your company rather than go to
someone they do not know or did not have own identity.

Introduction of Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition caused by the presence of all or part of

an extra 21st chromosome. According to an article Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Down
syndrome had been describe as a genetic disorder that includes a combination of birth
defects, including some mental retardation and characteristic facial features. In 1862,
English physician John Langdon Down defining Down syndrome as a distinct form of mental
disability. It is due to his perception that children with down syndrome shared physical facial
similarities with those of Blumenbach's Mongolian race.
Congenital heart disease is a diseases that often suffered from Down's Syndrome, up to
50% of patients affected. These disease is an opening in the septum or wall which separates
the two ventricles. It can be corrected with major surgery if it is still in early stage but it is a
high risk especially among infants. Besides, other diseases suffered by the Down Syndrome
are leukaemia, thyroid disorder, alzheimer's, eye disorder and respiratory problems. In short
majority Down's syndrome have a health problem. Sometimes the cost of financing is so
expensive until there are families who cannot afford to cover the costs. Persatuan Down
Syndrome Malaysia(PDSM) is appealing to the public for donations. PDSM is a non-profit
organisation that looks into the welfare of person with Down Syndrome, their parents,
guardians and immediate families.
An article entitled 'Awareness' in 2012 state, awareness begins with knowledge. For those
families affected by Down syndrome, individuals with Down syndrome and the general
community this knowledge is essential. Awareness brings focus. As people become more
aware of Down syndrome, they can focus on what those who have Down syndrome can
achieve instead of what they cannot accomplish. Fred Tan (2012), who is President of
Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation stated that ' Parents and Malaysians in general have to
be told that the child has the right to be loved, to live, to be educated, to be friend and to

belong to a community' in an article from New Straits Times entitled Down's Syndrome
children get their special day.
The intention why Down Syndrome has been selected as a main issue because they need to
be concern because they have their own right to be loved, to live, to educated and mingle
with society. Maybe some people just look at their inadequacy without knowing their
advantages. This is supported by Fred Tan (2012), who is President of Kiwanis Down
Syndrome Foundation stated that ' Parents and Malaysians in general have to be told that
the child has the right to be loved, to live, to be educated, to be friend and to belong to a
community' in an article from New Straits Times entitled Down's Syndrome children get their
special day.
President of Down Syndrome Malaysia (2012), said that every parent of a child Down
Syndrome will ask 'Is there a future for him?' Parents should gets reminded that their child
has their own advantages. Some parents do not want their child to be featured because they
are shy by the presence of the less fortunate children.
In addition, society must aware that they do not need any sympathy, they just need help.
Parents that have Down Syndrome children should be aware of the ability they have, not just
look at their disabilities. There are some teachers assume that they have no hope to
accomplish things due to their disabilities. The attitude of teachers should be change
because Down syndrome is not like a normal students, their rate of response to learning is
different from other students.
President of Malaysian Down Syndrome Association, Wan Mohd Hanizan Wan Ramlan
(2012), said that through donation, the fund will be used to improve the facilities, training
equipment and improve Down Syndrome life. Majority Down's syndrome have a health
problem. Sometimes the cost of financing is so expensive until there are families who cannot
afford to cover the costs. Thus, as society we should concerned, this issue should be

highlighted to the attention of the public so that they can provide in a variety of ways to help
those unfortunate.
1.3

Background of research
The word Kiwanis came from an American Indian expression which is 'Nuc Kee-

wanis' that represent ' we share our talents'. On 21st January 1915, the first Kiwanis Club
was organized in Detroit Michigan USA. It expanded into Canada a years later when the
Kiwanis Club was chartered. In 1962 the movement became an International Organization
and today is present in 89 countries around the globe.
In Malaysia, Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation (KDSF) is one of Non Profit Organization
that committed to the welfare of children with Down Syndrome. Kiwanis comes to Malaysia
since 1988. In 1988 the idea of a facility to help children with Down Syndrome was first
mooted because on that year there was no organization that represent to help Down
Syndrome. KDSF was declared open by late Datuk Dr. Siti Hasmah since September 1989
in Petaling Jaya with 35 children with Down Syndrome and 2 teachers. In year 2003, KDSF
expanded from one bungalow to 2 bungalows with an enrolment 0f 168 students, 12
teachers and 5 administrative. Nowadays, KDSF manages 7 Down Syndrome Centre in
Malaysia which are at Petaling Jaya, Klang, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Kulai, Malacca and Kota
Kinabalu. These centre implement the Early Intervention Program, adopt from the Robert
Dellar's Curriculum as it teaching guide.
Among the seven branches of KDSF, I choose Klang Centre as my main client. In June
1994, KDSF came to Klang with one teacher and 4 children. Since 2003, KDSF Klang had
moved to larger premises in Jalan Kampar, Klang where it can fulfilled for up to 60 children.
Currently, there are 55 students had been registered under this centre who attend the school
twice a week for one on one teaching with their specially trained teachers. It include 2 infants
and children up to 1 years old until 6 years old. This centre only accept children from birth till
6 years old. There are 5 teachers and one administrative in this centre. Students only come

twice a week, others day they are suggested to sent their children to Private Kindergarten ,
so that these children can expose with a normal children. According to Nuriza, a mother of
Muhammad Firdaus who is Down Syndrome, when she sent her son to a Private
Kindergarten it affected her son. Her son give some improvement because environment also
can influence the process of learning.
Anyone aged up to 18 who has an interest to be a volunteers in serving the children of the
community are welcome to be one of the Kiwanis Club members. For memberships its cost
RM 180.00 - RM 240.00 a year depends on the branches and a onetime joining fee of
RM60.00. It is RM 180.00 a year in Klang and the payment will be collected in October every
year. RM 70 out of this fee goes to Kiwanis International , RM60 goes to support the running
of the District and the balance remains for club administrative purpose. The Clubs will be
holding a number of activities for member organization such as fund raising, organize special
events for Down syndrome, dinner program and so on. The Involvement is fun and very
worthwhile.
Every month on the 3rd Wednesday at 8.00 pm at the Klang Executive Club there will be
held a dinner meeting for The Kiwanis Club of Klang. All the members are notified of the
dinner programme every months and the venues might be change if there is a joint meeting
with another club. The main purpose of this gathering is to fellowship when they get together
and usually it cost around RM20.00 per person.
Kiwanis is Non-Profit Organization. They do not fixed the fees that parents need payable to
Kiwanis. It sincerely. According to Mrs. Ardinson, Administrative of KDSF Klang, some
parents are paying RM10 a month, a hundred a month depends on their ability. If KDSF
want to expect fees from the parents it certainly be inadequate. Within a month they only get
around RM3000 from the fees whereas the students need more than RM3000. The money
are needed to improve the learning equipments, food, student welfare and so on. If there are
children which may require surgery, the KDSF will help in terms of money according to how

much money is needed by the child. How KDSF Klang raise funds to fund the Down
Syndrome children? They will come out with various activities such as fundraising events for
charity. Usually in the event they will open a booth to sell souvenirs to be purchased by the
society. As a result the money will be raised for the welfare of students. The third week of
this April, KDSF Klang will held a dinner to raise funds. Thus, parents who have children in
the KDSF Klang asked to sell at least 4 tickets, RM60 per ticket. Besides, they also get a
sponsors from several companies and certain people.
KDSF Klang using the Early Intervention Program (EIP), adopt from the Robert Dellar's
Curriculum as it teaching guide. These program include 9 list of skills that the students need
to learn step by step depends on their abilities. Firstly, Gross Motor Skills is for a babies to
learning how to turn, crawl, walk to a 4 years old learning to ride a bike. Secondly is Fine
Motor Skills. Students learn to stacking blocks starting from one block and keep counting
until they can do it expertly. Then they will be learning how to draw a person. Language
Development is an important areas because children usually have delayed speech. The
teachers will teach them starting from a word. If they can proceed with it, the teacher will
teach them two word, three word and keep counting until they can read a simple book that
provide by Kiwanis itself.
Pre-Reading and Number Skills is a lesson to identify the basic colours to matching 9 sets of
alphabets. Next, they will learn a simple mathematics and continue reading. All the reading
books are provided depends on the abilities of the students. It will not same because some
students take time to learn how to read. To make sure they will be an independent students,
in Self Help Skills they are taught to feed, drink, bath, wearing clothes, go to the bathroom by
themselves. This skill is really work according to the a mother with Down Syndrome children.
KDSF Klang also organize outdoor activities for the students in process of learning to relate
with other children and adults. Recently, KDSF Klang bring their children to Sunway Lagoon
and last 21 March they organize an event for the students to mingle with society. Lastly,
students are also exposed to the art and craft. They will produce their work according to their

own creativity and their work will be posted creative corner. Clay Dough in these centre is
made with flour for the safety of students. So when there are a student eaten it accidently, it
will not endanger their health because their clay dough is a food. All the students will learn
all the skills for their syllabus. If the students cannot finish the syllabus before 6 years old,
their report will be sent to the Sekolah Pendidikan Khas to continue their studies.

Objective

The main objective in this research to study the corporate identity toward down sydrome
organization that focused on Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Klang Centre. It is also to
build people trust on this organization if they have their own identity and they can be more
famous organization that can compete with other organization.
1.5

Problem Statement

Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Klang Centre has been established since year 1994
and until now they do not have their own corporate identity to represent their organization. In
addition, they lack of information signages. For the first time visitor, it's hard for them to know
what's the corner is all about. Others, this organization also need a donation from society
since children with down syndrome have a lot of health problem. So, the fund will be used to
help children in health and education
1.6

Significance of study

The intention why Down Syndrome has been selected as a main issue because they need to
be concern because they have their own right to be loved, to live, to educated and mingle
with society. Maybe some people just look at their inadequacy without knowing their
advantages. This is supported by Fred Tan (2012), who is President of Kiwanis Down
Syndrome Foundation stated that ' Parents and Malaysians in general have to be told that
the child has the right to be loved, to live, to be educated, to be friend and to belong to a
community' in an article from New Straits Times entitled Down's Syndrome children get their
special day.
It also to foster the concern of those less fortunate and what can we do to help them starting
from giving a knowledge about Down Syndrome to the society. What is important is that
people give more attention to them so that they feel more appreciated. According to Mrs

Ardinson, an administrative in KDSF Klang, society nowadays lack of knowledge about

Down Syndrome except parents that have children with Down Syndrome.
Besides, they does not have its own corporate identity. To reassure the public, they need to
make improvements in terms of identity so that people are more confident with this
organizations. There are some strategies that can be held to improve the identity of this
organization. Starting from rebranding the logo, corporate signatures, uniform and other
things that will represent their identity. If this organization has its own identity, so that people
can get to know about the organization. When it is already known means this organization
has managed to create confidence in the public to send their children with down syndrome to
this organization.

1.7

Delimitation

The scope of the study is among the administrative, therapists, parents and children with
down syndrome in the area of Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Klang Centre. The
research is more focus on corporate identity and rebranding the organization to make it more
successful to build people trust on it. In addition, it also will be focus about the strategies on
how to make improvement in term of identity in this organization.
1.8

Limitations

There are some limitation during the research ongoing. The constraints experienced is in
terms of time. The ride takes about an hour from the university. When the question has been
sent through email, the administrative takes time to answer it. In addition, no limitations
faced because on arrival in Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Klang Centre everyone
gives a very good collaboration.

2.2.5 Literature Review that related
One of the key considerations in terms of successful branding is the nature of the
business, product or service. It is very important to keep these aspects of your
business in mind, so that people can remember your identity. The role of colours,
visual and even the style of artistry that used in any logo or brand image will all affect
customers or potential clients to make assumptions before build trust on it. Colour
and logo need to up-to-date to attract people's interest.
Mustafa (2009) wrote in his journal entitle The Importance Of Creating A Successful
Corporate Identity And Corporate Images For Enterprise In Marketing Management,
logo is the most eye catching attribute. Either they want to change the logo or not, to
protect or not and to repair or not the logo it's up to the companies. Basically, most
company or organization do not want to lose their commercial capital and accepted
logo. For example, General Electric. This company has made a lot of changes in their
logo structure but they did not change their 'GE' logo. They only make a small
modification, so that people can still recognized them. GE is a one of the best
example for strategy of keeping own capital while taking steps to the future.
According to Mrs. Ardinson, Administrative of KDSF Klang, some parents are paying
RM10 a month, a hundred a month depends on their ability. If KDSF want to expect
fees from the parents it certainly be inadequate. Within a month they only get around

RM3000 from the fees whereas the students need more than RM3000. The money
are needed to improve the learning equipments, food, student welfare and so on. If
there are children which may require surgery, the KDSF will help in terms of money
according to how much money is needed by the child.
President of Persatuan Down Syndrome Malaysia (2012) said that majority Down's

until there are families who cannot afford to cover the costs. Persatuan Down

parents, guardians and immediate families.

Chapter 3 : Data Analysis

3.1

Introduction

Based on the problem statements, this chapter will be focused on the strategies to solve the
problems. All the information will be analysis based on the strategies that will be used in
term to study the corporate identity toward down syndrome organization that focused on
Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Klang Centre. Starting from rebrand the logo design,
corporate manual and other that related to represent their identity. It is also to build people
trust on this organization if they have their own identity and they can be more famous
organization that can compete with other organization. In addition, if they can put trust on
society they can easy to raise some fund for the children.
3.2

Data Analysis

The concept that has been used in this design process is pastel colour which more on soft
blue and pink. It is because blue and pink are synonym with the children. Pink and blue is
colour of children. Pink symbolism of young children that need guidance. Pink provides
feeling of caring, softness, self-worth and love. According to Sage (2012), blue represent
cooling and soothing colour. People that love blue colour are often very sensitive to the
feelings of those around them with physical and emotional awareness. Blue auras are
naturally peaceful and peace-loving people. Its reflect to children with down syndrome that
really sensitive. They are very sensitive because they require the attention of the people
around me. They need guidance from the society, especially from family members. Fred Tan
(2012), who is President of Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation stated that ' Parents and
Malaysians in general have to be told that the child has the right to be loved, to live, to be
educated, to be friend and to belong to a community' in an article from New Straits Times
entitled Down's Syndrome children get their special day.
The colour concept of blue and pink will be applied in design of corporate identity of Kiwanis
Down Syndrome Foundation. It is hoped that the selected color to produce softness and

serenity to the soul down syndrome children. Since the administrative of this organization
said society is lack of knowledge about the existence down syndrome organization, when
the organization has its own identity hopefully it will build the public's trust in the organization
so that they can raise more funds. In addition, with the availability of a new identity it is
believed to be more powerful and more organized. Corporate identity is importance to guide
and

strengthens the company to reach a wider and target discovery. It provides for

balancing the needs between the company and target audience. With new identity, it will
increase the value of the brand, products and the service of the company ( Mustafa, 2009 ).

Chapter 4 : Conclusion And Recommendation

4.1

Conclusion

As a conclusion, corporate identity is really important in an organization. It is just an identity

that's use to represent the business, organization or identity. To reassure the public, this
organization need to make improvements in terms of identity so that people are more
confident with this organizations. When the organization has its own identity hopefully it will
build the public's trust in the organization so that they can raise more funds. In addition, with
the availability of a new identity it is believed to be more powerful and more organized.
Corporate identity is importance to guide and strengthens the company to reach a wider and
target discovery.
4.2

Recommendation

Referred to design process, starting from rebrand the logo design, corporate manual and
other that related to represent their identity.

It is also to build people trust on this

organization if they have their own identity and they can be more famous organization that
can compete with other organization. The logo should be rebrand because current logo
depicts images of children being fiercely. It is not represent the children that happy with their
life. In addition, they need to have corporate signatures include business card, letterhead
and envelope which is to be used if there is any letter to be sent to the parents or office use.
If all the students wear the same uniform it will look more standardized and it will represent
the identity of the organization. Since the organization often make field trips for students, I
propose that this organization has its own van to facilitate travel. In the long term, this van
