FAMILY
What is a family?
We dont often talk about this topic, because we dont need to define something
that everybody knows. If we take a look at the internet we are going to find
different meanings of this, for example: In context of human society a family
means a group of individuals who share a legal or genetic bond; but in a short
description I define a family as a group of people who respect, help and care
each other, and the most important thing: love and support each other.
In a family there are members of the immediate family or members of extended
family. The immediate family include a spouse, parent, brother, sister, son and/or
daughter, and the extended family may include grandparents, aunts, uncles,
cousins, nephews, nieces and/or siblings-in-law. This is not too important to
mention but is the way that it is known by everybody.
There are different types of families, and all of them include all about the last
definition. One of them is a couple, this is a relationship based between two
people who are married. Couples can be gay or straight, and their dependants or
children may also be members of the couple family if they all reside in the same
household. And a de facto partnership is a couple that live together; and are not
married.
I have read in newspapers and also I have seen in the TV that gay people are not
good relationships to have children (by adopting) because that children are going
to have problems at school and all that kind of things, and this kind of relations
also may prejudice in the preferences of the same children.
In my personal opinion I agree in the way that they say that the children of this
kind of relations are going to have problems at school, but I am not agree in the
way that just because the parents are gay, the son/daughter has to be gay too.
The education is very important, and thats why the places that helps to the
people adopting have to investigate very well how is the family that pretends to
adopt the children.
An example of this (not talking about adoption, but about being in a gay family)
could be Ricky Martin, he has two little boys, and he loves them. This is a good
example for gay relationships.
Sometimes adopting is a good option for this children, because they prefer to
have a family, I think they dont care if the couple is gay or straight, they want to
have a family, they are going to be better in a family that give them love and that
protects them.

On the other hand, there are the lone parent families, this is based on a person
who is not in a couple but forms a parent child relationship, it could be a mother
and a son or daughter, or a father and a son or daughter, there must be at least
two people to form a family, this families cant exist without children.
This topic is so important, because sometimes people think that just the women
can have children, but the men too. An example of this could be a straight
relationship that has two children, and then they have problems and they get
divorced, obviously they are going to see who of them will have the custody of
the children. Supposing that the fault is of her, because she is alcoholic or
something similar, he has to have the custody, not her. Anyway, this is just an
example.
The others kind of families are the ones that are blended, it means that is a family
where one parent has children from a previous relationship that are not
genetically related to the other parent. The example of this is a movie called
blended where the actors are two adult persons, a men and a woman that have
children but they dont have a couple, and in a travel they meet each other, so
they decide to marry and at the end they form a blended family.
What is not a family?
Divorced or separated parents who live alone, but have children who usually live
elsewhere, are not considered to be in a family.
People who live by themselves in one house while their parents live in a different
house are treated the same way. Even though they are part of a family, unless
they live in the same household they don't form a family for the purpose of these
statistics.
People who aren't related and living in the same household, such as students
sharing a flat, aren't considered to be a family unless one of the members of the
household is under 15. In such cases, children under 15 are considered to be
financially dependent, and so, if they aren't living with their parent or guardian,
they form a child dependency relationship with the oldest member of a household
(the family head), thereby forming a lone parent family.
Furthermore, if a child under the age of 15 has a child or a partner/spouse of their
own, then that relationship is not recorded.
In conclusion, I think that a family is so much more than a group of individuals
who share a legal or genetic bond, is so much more than living in the same
house, and is so much more than having the custody... a family is that group of
people that share that feeling called LOVE.
