QUALITY AirPak units are available with single wall and/or double wall panels, Panels are available with a variety of insula- tion. Double wall panels have a full 2 inches of insulation with solid or perforated lining. The additional option of 4 inch panels are available in discharge segments for acous- tical application. insulation and liners can be mixed and ‘matched to meet a variety of applications. ‘The AitPak coll drain pan is designed to meet the intent of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) requirements. The pan is 4 inches deep with a “V-shaped’ design that reduces stand- ing condensate. The pan has a full inches of insulation to give the pan the thermal protection it requires. Indoor Air Quality drain pans (optional) are sloped in all direc- tions with a single drain connection to minimize standing condensate. Auxiliary drain pans are available in every section. Intermediate drain pans are provided on all cool- ing coils that exceed 48 inches in finned height. FLEXIBILITY AIRPAK IAQ COIL DRAIN PAN ‘YORK INTERNATIONAL For maximum flexibility the AirPak is based on a seg- mented design concept. The unit construction is unit- ized, built as a single unit, for greater unit integrity. The unit may be split per customer defined needs if required, to mest various shipping and job site requirements. ‘The unitized construction means that each unit is built as a unit, not as a assembly of segments. This adds. integrity to the unit and decreases the opportunity for unit air leakage by greatly reducing the number of sheet metal joints. ‘Accomplete line of Factory-Packaged Controls are avail- able with the YORK AirPak. Factory Packaged Controls assures the customer of single source responsibilty, lower first cost and high quality. YORK International now fea- tures an RS-232 PROTOCOL that can communicate with any Building Automation System on the job site. SERVICEABILITY ‘The AirPak features unparalleled accessibility. AllAirPak panels (single or double wall) are completely removable as a single piece assemble. This eliminates the time consuming practice of removing the interior and exterior panels as separate pieces, ‘Access doors are available throughout the unit for ac- cess. The fan and filter segments come equipped with access doors asa standard feature. ‘The YORK AirPak can also be offered with Quick-Con- nect Fasteners on the side access panels on most unit sizes. The unique YORK panel latching system allows panels to be removed and replaced in a matter of sec- REMOVABLE ACCESS PANELS General Description ‘SPRINGRETURN, DAMPER ACTUATOR (OPTIONAL) DEEP FILTER! The panels can also be removed in tight clearance areas that do not permit normal door operation. This is an ex- Clusive feature of the YORK AirPak, CONSTRUCTION ‘The YORK AitPak design and construction is unequaled in quality and serviceability. Its unique design gives the strength and durability for industrial applications and the ‘complete serviceability that can only be found in the YORK, AirPak. UNIT DESIGN SUMMARY Unitized Construction ‘The design and application concept of the AirPak allows, the designer the flexibility to arrange individual segments. fora variety of applications. Each unitis then engineered and built as a single piece of equipment. This results in ‘superior integrity when compared to units utlizing mod- ules (sections) that are connected with sheet metal ‘screws to form a unit. Each individual unit is custom designed to minimize the number of panels in the unit, This decreases the opportu- nity for airleakage and assures better unit integrity, YORK INTERNATIONAL, FORM 100.00-661 AIRPAK UNITIZED CONSTRUCTION Full Perimeter Base Rail Channel The AirPak is completely supported by a full-perimeter base rail channel. The base rallis constructed of heavy gage galvanized ste! and has intermediate cross- mem- bers for unit support. The base rail gives support to the internal components and protects the unit during ship- ment and installation. The base rail also provides add- tional height forjob site trapping of condensate drain pans. Unit Frame ‘The rugged unit frame gives the unit industrial quality and durability. The integral frame permits the unit panels to be removed without affecting the integrity of the unit, Af- ter a of the panels have been removed, the frame re- ‘mains to support the internal components. YORK INTERNATIONAL, AIRPAK UNIT FRAME General Description Cast Aluminum Corner Post ‘The rugged cast aluminum comer posts add strength and rigidity o the unit. The beveled corner finish also symbol izes the comprehensive engineering, style and quality of the YORK AirPak. AIRPAK CORNER CONNECTOR: Full Length and Height Raceway Channels ‘The fully insulated, double-wall raceway channels tie the entire unit together by connecting the corner posts, unit frame and base rail. The raceway also creates the panel sealing. Removable Panels All of the AitPak panels are completely removable with- ‘out affecting the structural rigidity of the unit. As an op- tion, the panels can be provided with Quick-Connect Fas- teners on the side access panels for most unit sizes. ‘The removable panels reduce the time required to service and clean components - which is an important part of maintaining good Indoor Environmental Quality REMOVABLE ACCESS PANELS (CUTAWAY) Quick Connect Fastener ‘The Quick-Connect Fastener is the key to the optional panel removal system. The latch is operable with a simple ‘wrench. The motion of the latch is 180 degrees. The first, 90 degrees moves the lever arm toa sealing position on the frame and the second 90 degrees pulls the latch snug, creating the panel seal fe RACEWAY CHANNELS. QUICK CONNECT FASTENER YORK INTERNATIONAL, FORM 100.00-661 VARIABLE AIR VOLUME APPLICATIONS Factory mounted variable frequency drives (YORK Air- Modulator) and variable inlet vanes are available with the YORK AirPak for Variable Air Volume Applications YORK Air-Modulator (Variable Frequency Drive): ‘The YORK Air-Modulator (variable frequency drive) offers the most efficient means of fan control for variable air volume systems. The Air-Modulator varies the speed of the fan to match the VAV load requirements. ‘The Air- Modulator takes maximum advantage ofthe rela~ tionship between fan speed and fan horsepower. With the Air-Modulator, any given reduction in fan speed re- sults in a cubic reduction in fan horsepower. For example, a 10% speed reduction results in a 27% fan horsepower reduction! ‘The Air-Modulator offers the following benefits over vari- able inlet vanes and discharge dampers: + Extended Equipment Life - soft start of motor and fan. + Quieter Fan Operation -fan operating at reduced speed and constant line of efficiency. + Eliminates need for starter panels. + Improved system control and response - DDC Controls with LED Digital Display. + Available on all unit sizes as a factory mounted op- tion + Proven Reliability, YORK will balance the fan for the entire range of opera- tion (10 - 100% RPM) for added reliability, Actual fan tum- down will vary with fan type and selection, Variable Inlet Vanes Variable inlet vanes are another method of energy effi- cient fan control, While the fan runs at a constant speed, the inlet vanes modulate the air entering the fan, This produces a reduced air volume which results in lower ‘operating horsepowers. Variable inlet vanes are available on all Airfoil fans, Ple- num fans and Forward Curved fans sizes 12 x 12 and larger. ‘The vanes are located within each inlet cone of Airfoil fans, Plenum fans, and adjacent to the inlet ring of For- ward Curved fans, The vanes consist of a series of radial damper blades which operate in parallel and are con- trolled by a common control shaft which extends to the outside of the fan, ‘YORK INTERNATIONAL For additional information on the Air-Modulator, refer to Form 100.04-£G1 \ ow. DetaT = ‘YORK INTERNATIONAL 00 MINIMUM AIR VELOCITY (FPM) AT EVERY POINT OF FACE AREA re eT eT ee 33, Unit Selection ‘SELECTING AN AIRPAK AIR HANDLING UNIT AirPak air handlers permit selection of components to meet individual job requirements. The wide selection of basic sections, optional components, coils, and acces~ sories, enables the design engineer to obtain optimum performance and temperature control Selection of the optimum system for each individual ap- plication requires only the following simple steps: Step 1 - Determination of Total Air Supply Quantity, Step 2 - Selection of Basic Unit Size and Arrangement, Step 3 - Selection of Cooling andlor Heating Coils. Step 4- Selection of Accessories (fiters, mixing boxes, dampers, etc.) Step 5 - Selection of Fan, Motor and Drive, STEP1 TOTAL AIR SUPPLY QUANTITY ‘The total air supply quantity will be determined by the largest of 1. Ventilation, make-up or pressurization requirement b. Cooling load (most frequent for air conditioning) c. Heating load (for heating only) 4. Contaminant or odor removal Ventilation requirements may be dictated by the local code or ordinance, or established through the use of rec- ‘ommendations in the ASHRAE Guide. Make-up air should at least equal total exhaust from the space, plus allow- ance for pressurization to minimize infiltration, For comfort air conditioning, the total air supply quantity will usually be determined by the simultaneous peak cool ing load - calculated by established methods published in the ASHRAE Guide. The required air supply may be determined by the formula: ory = Sensible Space Coating (or Heating) Load (BTUHR) 1.08 x (Entering dry Bulb °F — Leaving dry Bulb *F) Depending on available cooling medium, ar distribution considerations, and humidity control requirements, the Cooling Temperature Differentials usually in the 15°F to 25°F range. Since Heating Temperature Differentials are frequently ‘much higher, the air quantity required for heating is usu- ally less than for cooling. For projects requiring heating only, the heating load may be the controlling factor. Heat, losses in long duct runs must be considered. Humidity control, contaminant removal, or odor control will occasionally effect total air quantity. 34 STEP2 BASIC UNIT SIZE AND ARRANGEMENT With a selection of five different fans for most units, the basic unit size may be selected on the basis of coil face area, AirPak units for cooling and dehumidification service must, hold the coil face velocity below the point of moisture carry-over. The usual imitis 600 FPM. For lowerlife cycle costs, 350-400 FPM velocity is recommended. For a VAV system at minimum part load conditions, it is recom- mended that coil face velocity not be allowed to fall below 200 FPM for a water coil and 400 FPM for a refrigerant, coil. Use the next larger unit size ifthe approximate face area falls between that of two units. Refer to the Table on page 20 (Coil Data) for actual face areas. ‘Total CEM Desired Face Velocly ‘Approximate Face Area Forheating and ventilation service, or for units involving only sensible cooling, face velocity is limited only by the high internal air pressure drop and resultant higher sound level of higher air lows. Selections are typically made in the 800 to 1000 FPM face velocity range. The following formula may be used: Unit arrangement wil be determined by system require- ments and space considerations. STEP3 COOLING AND HEATING COILS Approximate ‘Total CFM Face Area ~ Desired Face Velosly Cooling and Heating loads may be determined by estab- lished methods as published in the ASHRAE Guide. Avail- able media will determine whether coils will be selected for hot water, chilled water, steam, refrigerant or glycol. With loads determined and the medium selected, the coil rows, fins, and circuiting can be selected from the ‘appropriate Engineering Guides on YORK TURBOFIN and FREEFLOW coils or by a YORK Sales Engineer with YorkWorks. Coil sizes and face areas for each unit size are shown in the Engineering Data Section. Internal face and bypass coil selection may be deter- mined using reduced face coils. ‘YORK INTERNATIONAL FORM 100.00-661 STEP 4 ACCESSORIES Awide range of accessories are available to tallor the YORK AlrPak to specific system requirements. Included in the Accessories are: face and bypass dampers, mix- ing dampers, flat or angle filters, rigid or bag filers, air blenders, economizers, diffusers, discharges, access segments, etc. STEPS FANS, MOTORS AND DRIVES Total air system resistance must be determined for fan selection. Internal airflow resistance of the unit acces- sories can be determined from Tables on pages 38-45, ‘Add the extemal system resistance (ref. ASHRAE Guide) to the internal resistance to obtain total static pressure forfan selection, ‘The nominal ranges of Total Static Pressure (TSP) forthe available fan types are: up to 6" for FC, 9" for AF and up to 6.25" for SWS! fans. Casing limitations are 26" w.g, Fan RPM and BHP is determined from fan performance curves and tables using unit size, fan type, CFM and TSP. Correct fan RPM and BHP, necessary, for air tem- perature and altitude, using factors given on page 35. Fan tables and curves do not include drive losses. Refer to Form 100.09-EG1.1 (Forward Curved and Airfoil Fan Curves and Tables) for individual AirPak units.
