Nobody wanted Ananse to succeed in drinking the cup of water and win, Adiefe the
chief s beautiful daughter.
Ananse grabbed as the cup of hot water, bowed as gracefully as possible and smil
ed confidently. He lifted the cup of hot water and said slowly and calmly, Nana,
look ! Nana Apo barked, yes it s hot. Drink it right now! But Ananse kept a cool head.
Then in the full glare of all present, he shook the cup vigorously for sometime
in order cool its content. after this he began to sip the now- lukewarm water a
s it was still hot. Between the sips ,the pain he seemed to be going through mad
e him frown. He shut the left eye and his right eye shone brightly . he delibera
tely let his left his left hand drop loosely by his side.
Nana Apo smiled. Queen Amola grinned. Adiefe giggled-all happy anticipa
ted of Ananses failure.
Suddenly, Ananse began to drink the warm water more quickly and noisily
. Soon, all was gone. He turned the cup upside down towards Nana and indeed, the
re was not a single drop in it. Lo and behold, kweku Ananse , the notorious tric
kster had succeeded where all others failed. There was complete silence. Even th
e wind seems to have stop blowing. The impossible had happened and peoples expec
tation that Kwaku Ananse would lose the contest has failed. Eventually kwaku Ana
nses victory had won him the hand of pretty princesses Adiefe.
Nana Apo and Queen Amola, with great reluntance lead their daught
er Adiefe and handed her over to victorious Kwaku Ananse.

4. Read the following passage carefully and answer all questions that follows.
Obika was one handsome young men in obikro and all the surrounding district
. His face was finely cut and his nose stood gem, like the note a gong. His skin
was like his father s color of terracotta.
But two things spoilt Obika. He drank palm wine to excess and he was give
n to sudden and fiery anger. And being as strong as a rock, he was always inflic
ting injury on others.
Not very long ago, Obika had come from very close indeed to committing m
urder. His half-sister Efe, often came home to say that her husband had beaten h
er. One early morning she came again with her face swollen. Without waiting to h
ear the rest of the story Obika set out for Akyemfo, the village of his brotherin law. On the way he stop to call his friend, Abrabo who was never absent from
the scene of a fight. As they approach Akyemfo Obika explained to Abrabo that he
must not help in beating Efe s husband. why have you called me then Abrabo asked Ob
ika angrily to carry your bag? there may be work for you if Akyemfo people are wh
at I take them to be, they will come in full force to defend their brother. Then
there will be work for u Obika retorted.
No one in Ezelu s compound knew where Obika had gone until he returned a l
ittle before noon with Abrabo his friend. On their head was Efe s husband tied to
a bed, almost dead.
They set him down under the Ukwa tree and dared anyone to move him. The women an
d neighbors pleaded with Obika and showed him the threatening ripe fruit on the
tree which was as big as a water pot. Yes, I put him there on purpose, to be crus
hed by the fruit- the beast.
For three weeks, Ibe could barely rise from his bed. Then one evening, h
is kinsmen came to seek satisfaction from Ezelu. Because most of them had gone o
ut to their farms when the incident happened. Then the kinsman of Ibe waited pat
iently for a month seeking for someone to explain why their kinsmen should be be
aten and carried away by his brother in-law, and his friend. You should have seen
her the day she came home. Is this how you marry women in your village? If it i
s ypour way then, I say u will not marry my daughter like that .
The kinsmen then agreed that Ibe had stretched his hand too far and so n
o one could blamed Obika for standing in for the sister.
