Walther Evid

Born on a medium sized farm on the outskirts of the community known as Blaze, Walther was a
fairly ordinary child of one of the more important area farmers. Seventh of nine surviving children,
Walther has never wanted for companionship, although occasionally for privacy. He was always slower
than the other children, and while this never inhibited his ability to work the farm, his continual losses
at games eventually led him to pursue a love of reading. He was lucky both that he lived in a town
where reading was encouraged and that his father was wealthy and educated enough to have a few
books and understand their value. The first great tragedy in Walther's life struck when his mother died
during the birth of what was to be her twelfth child, along with the girl who would have been Walther's
youngest sibling. He and his family were grief stricken, but with tragedy comes opportunity. The local
cleric of Mortent, a man by the name of Sylissis White, arrived swiftly after the news of this tragedy
was brought to town, and did wonders consoling the stricken Evids. Walther, fascinated with the elderly
White's wisdom and compassion, quickly took an interest in the religious aspects of Blaze. His father,
having taken a renewed focus on his children and their well being, noticed this and arranged to have his
son apprenticed to White, who gratefully accepted another who took an interest in his works. Years of
studying religious rites and performing ceremonies for the men, women, and other creatures who
inhabit the region, in addition to hard work keep the farm running followed. Walther learned well the
creed of Mortent, and was able to preform the proper ceremonies both when his 3rd eldest brother died
in a mining accident, and when his father finally succumbed to old age and grief.
Seeing little to tie him to the community he lived in for so long, and feeling the need to explore
the world and bring the solace of Mortent to the disparate and grieving peoples of the land, Walther left
the farm, now in the care of his eldest brother, and set out to see the world, with nothing but some
money, the articles of his faith, and the Scythe that was both the emblem of Mortent and the tool of his
previous trade. Along the way he has encountered both hardships and joy, and even managed to help a
few people.

Blaze
Population: 6000
The community called Blaze actually encompasses most of the land surrounding the nearby iron
mine which is the main source of its income. The community is mostly divided between the miners
who work the mines and the farmers who feed them. Blaze proper is little more than a disorderly
cluster of buildings, including a town hall, several blacksmiths, a small temple to Charsi, and the vast
array of tenements the miners and their families live in. The chief exports are iron form the mines,
goods from a bevy of talented local blacksmiths, and the excess food that is neither stored or sold
locally. Blaze, in spite of or because of its situation on the frontier, is a very progressive and diverse
community. A past mayor once famously declared that he would welcome Anyone or anything that
can swing a pick, work a farm, or crack a skull, as long as it can read and write. Town ordinances
require that one must be able to read well enough to read the town ordinances by oneself in order to
vote in the mayoral elections or any sort of referendum. While in some places this would be an attempt
to control an ignorant populace, Blaze supports both a pair of schoolhouses and a number of wandering
tutors who service the outlying farms. One can find representatives from most of the intelligent races in
or around Blaze if one looks hard enough, as their unique perspectives are often welcomed on difficult
matters. Some famous examples of these are the tutor Drocagin Moonsling, whose elfin lifespan has
allowed him to keep his job as a tutor for the past 300 years, and the family of Grimlocks who work
the deepest sections of the mine and are the only exception to the reading rule.

Triumvirate
While the people, to use that term lightly, of Blaze worship any number of deities, most at least
pay some homage to the trio of local gods. The Cult of the Triumvirate, a very pretentious name for
what they are, are a group of gods slowly gaining favor in some agrarian societies, for they deal in the
things farmers are most concerned about. Every household in Blaze has been given a copy of the
Parables of the Triumvirate, a book of short stories and prayers the church put together snd
distributed free of charge.
Charsi:The creator goddess of the triumvirate, Charsi deals in life, rebirth, and growth
throughout the year. She is prayed to by farmers wishing for a bounteous harvest, as well as the
relatives of the sick or injured. She insures that the crops grow, people are born, and winter turns into
spring. Her symbol is an ear of corn, and she possesses no favored weapon. Creation, Healing,
Community, Good, Plant. Divine Rank 2. Chaotic Good.
Quennthal: God of the weather and the earth, Quennthal represents the elements that cannot be
controlled. He is both the cause of natural disasters and of natures bounty. Farmer's pray to him for
good weather or to end bad storms, miners pray for the roof to hold a few more seconds or to find a
new vein of some expensive ore. He has no shrines, his services are held simply in open spaces
whenever there is a disaster as well as at the start of the growing season and the winter. Weather,
Chaos, Destruction, Earth, Sun. Divine Rank 5. Chaotic Neutral.
Mortent: As a god of death, Mortent has the unfortunate duty of collecting the souls of those
who die and making sure they are properly cared for. His clerics teach that it is from death that life
springs, and it is Mortent who spends the winter rejuvenating the land and making sure that crops
plowed under will invigorate the next generation. His clerics preform all funeral services in the Blaze
area, but do so in accordance with the traditions of those they are helping. His clerics are also
responsible for counseling the grieving and helping them through the mourning process. Most homes
have a small shrine to Mortent in memory of some lost loved one. Repose, Community, Protection.
Divine Rank 2. Neutral Good.
