{ LETTER FROM THE EDITORS }

In our office and, yes, in our lives, we often think of

The Little Engine That Could, an illustrated childrens
book from the early 1900s that teaches children the
value of optimism and hard work.
Thats how we feel about our publication.
With much optimism and a lot of hard work, we have been able to produce The
Columbia Notebook for more than 12 years. We are a small but determined engine
that continually competes against the larger, fast-paced trains. Besides being
optimistic and hard-working, we genuinely care about our clients, from meeting
with each and every client to target their exact marketing message to best convey
it to our audience, to checking in with them throughout the magazines six-month
reader span to ensure they are receiving feedback from the many avenues we use
to promote their products or services.
This Spring/Summer edition focuses on how to. When it comes to The Columbia
Notebook, weve summarized the how to list that we apply to each and every edition:
1. Listen to our clients;
2. Be fair and honest;
3. Work hard;
4. Try new things;
5. Stay true to our mission;
6. Promote our clients; and always
7. BELIEVE in the little publication that could!
We hope the how to insights, columns and advertising offered in this edition support
your abilities and skills in a positive way.

How to remove red

wine stains from carpet

For 25 years, Motor

Supply Company has
been Columbias
hot spot for farm-totable deliciousness,
cocktails and
year-round
outdoor dining.

Blot.

Use a clean white cloth to blot up as

much of the red wine stain as you can.
Youll need to alternate parts of the
cloth to always blot using a fresh spot.

Add a little water.

Pour a small amount of water onto the

red wine stain and continue blotting.
The water will help to dilute the red
wine, letting you blot up the stain more
easily. Be sure not to pour too much
water at a time. Continue until no more
stain can be removed.

Make a baking soda paste.

Use a 3:1 ratio of baking soda:water

paste on the red wine stain. Put the
paste directly on the stain and allow it
to dry before vacuuming up the paste.

Apply a carpet stain remover.

If the stain remains, apply a carpet stain

remover according to the manufacturers
instructions.
Be sure to test any carpet stain removal
techniques on a hidden area of your
carpet to make sure of the results.

We Want to Make a Difference

Sometime in our lifetime, we will all be touched
by cancer, be it ourselves, a family member or
a friend. Peggy and I made this bracelet for our
family members.

When we wore them, people inquired about them

and asked if they could purchase one. We thought
about it and thought why not? there is
strength in numbers and we would like to donate
a portion of the sales to cancer research. If you
are interested in owning one of these bracelets,
please email jakeannie@aol.com or call Cathy

Role Reversal: When Children Should

Talk to Parents About Money
As Baby Boomers grow older and
presumably wiser about economic
matters more are finding themselves in
a position of caretaker for elderly parents.
Raising the topic of money with parents can
be difficult. But with the right choice of words,
timing and tone, you can open the door to a
meaningful conversation.
Select a Representative. An initial conversation
about finances should be done one-onone. Involving too many people can be
overwhelming and appear threatening. If
you have siblings, select one perhaps the
oldest, most financially knowledgeable, or
one with whom your parent(s) may feel most
comfortable to lead the way. Remember, this
is about your parents money, not about yours
or your childrens.
Be Sensitive. To some extent, our financial
lives influence how we view ourselves as
independent human beings. For many, old age
is a time of coping with a series of physical
and emotional losses: hearing, eyesight,
mobility, memory, as well as friendships. With
any conversation about money, be sensitive
to the fears and concerns your parents may
harbor about their possible loss of control or
independence.

Break the Ice Skillfully. A subtle opening could

involve an anecdotal story about a person you
know in common, a news article found in the
daily paper, or even about yourself.
I need help with my will. Who did you use?
Hows Aunt Mary doing since Uncle Joe
passed away?

What was it like for your parents

during the Great Depression?

Did you watch that TV special on

hospitals last week?
Start Slowly. Dont commence a dialogue during
a crisis situation or try to resolve all details in
one meeting. Raise questions that your parents
can consider for a follow-up conversation. You
could try something like: Ill stop by for coffee
next week, and we can continue our talk. Maybe
youll have those papers by then?
Your parents may actually enjoy the attention.
After several informal conversations, you
may want to consider the help of a financial
professional. For more information, contact the
National Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org) and
AARP (www.aarp.org).

How to keep medications safe

Extreme heat and cold can cause medications to change physically,
and those changes can make medications less potent and some
medications unsafe to use. Oral contraceptives and other medications
that contain hormones are especially susceptible, since the proteins
they contain can change their properties during heat exposure.

The labels on medications, whether over-the-counter or prescription,

typically recommend storing them in a cool, dry place and keeping
them away from excessive heat and humidity, or might give a specific
temperature range, commonly 68 to 77 degrees. Thats an ideal range,
but most medications are still usable after storage in temperatures as
low as 32 to 58 degrees and as high as 80 to 86 degrees. Its always best
to consult a physician or pharmacist when less-than-ideal storage has
already happened or is anticipated.

Americans buy
about 5 billion
over-the-counter
drug products
annually and nearly
half of all Americans
use one or more
prescription drugs.

Moisture can also damage medications, so its generally best to keep

them tightly sealed in their original containers and avoid storing them
in a bathroom or kitchen cabinet, where moisture is more common.

We have a unique
tool to help women
with their breast
implant selection
before surgery.

Revision Breast
Surgery
Ram Kalus, MD, Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas
Many women undergo breast surgery,
whether breast augmentation for cosmetic
enhancement (the most common), breast
reduction for large heavy breasts (second
most common), mastopexy (breast lift)
for sagging or droopy breasts, or breast
reconstruction following a mastectomy or
lumpectomy for breast cancer.
Despite the fact that most women do well
with their initial surgery, a fair number
remain disappointed with their results.
Reasons for disappointment can be many.
In the case of breast augmentation, one
of the most frequently revised operations
in plastic surgery, breast size is the most
common reason, with many women
complaining of either not being large
enough, or having been over-augmented
and feeling as though they look artificial
and disproportionate. Other problems can
include highly visible or round implants
that are either too firm or too high, or both.

Fortunately, we have devised a unique

online tool (WhatSizeShouldIBe.com) to help
women with their breast implant selection
before surgery. This has proven to achieve an
exceptionally high patient satisfaction rate
with an extremely low occurrence of revision
surgery in our practice.
The most important aspect of a satisfactory
result for the breast surgery patient is
understanding proportion and aesthetics.
This is as true for the breast augmentation
patient as it is for the breast reduction or
breast reconstruction patient. The patient
needs to feel confident that her plastic
surgeon not only has the same sense of
aesthetics as she does, but also possesses
the surgical skill set and experience to be
able to achieve her desired outcome.
In our practice, we use the latest state-ofthe-art techniques for pre-operative and
intra-operative biodimensional analysis,
including tools and surgical techniques of
our own invention, in achieving the best
possible outcome for our patients.

For more information regarding all aspects of

breast surgery, please contact our office at
Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas (843) 881-3881
or visit www.PlasticSurgeryCarolina.com.

Are You Half of a Hot Couple?

by Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, Certified Sotto Pelle Physician
No matter how discreet women try to be,
sometimes a hot flash will strike with little warning
and be evident to an intimate companion. A little
understanding is appreciated at times like these,
but sometimes sympathy or consideration goes a
little farther. It can set us back immensely to have
a male friend admit, Oh, I get those too! as if
one-upping us at our own hormonal stage.
But the fact is: its quite possible he knows exactly
how youre feeling because he may suffer from
them as well.
A recent study by Harvard confirms that some
men suffer from the same symptoms as women:
a sudden feeling of warmth or flushing that
is most intense over the head and trunk, often
accompanied by visible redness of the skin and
by sweating, which can be profuse. Hot flashes
are most common at night. They are usually brief,
averaging four minutes, but often leave cold sweat
behind. Flashes may be infrequent and mild or
quite troublesome, sometimes occurring six to

10 times a day. Some

people, both male and
female, report anxiety,
palpitations or irritability.

Is bio-identical
hormone
replacement right
for you?

Hormonal balance can be the solution to both

men and womens hot flashes. So if your male
friend is relating a little too well to your discomfort,
suggest that he join you in a frank conversation
with a board-certified physician who can suggest
a solution such as bio-identical hormone
replacement treatment (BHRT).
Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, owner of Midlands Medical
Wellness Center, is a Sotto Pelle-certified physician,
trained in the evaluation and management of
BHRT. At our office there is no annual contract or
monthly fees. Although insurance is not accepted,
you pay only for services rendered.

How to house
train your dog
The most important part of
house training is supervision.

Supervising your new dog/puppy closely makes it

easy to pick up on the signs that he has to go
(sniffing, sometimes circling). If you cannot constantly
supervise your new dog/puppy to prevent accidents,
then you need to confine them in a crate, exercise
pen or room.
Closely watch any new dog or puppy in your house so
that you can prevent accidents. Regardless of age,
a dog will usually need to go after playtimes, when he
wakes up from a nap and about 1520 minutes after a
meal. Try to take puppies out every 3060 minutes.
Feeding/watering schedules mean that stuff goes
in at a certain time, such as once in the morning
and once in the evening, so you can also expect it
to come out at a certain time. Puppies who are fed
more meals per day need more outings.
Since the ability to hold the bladder develops with
age, young dogs have a harder time holding it. If you
are unsure how often your new dog or puppy needs
to go, take him out more often until youve gauged
timing and developed a routine.

The moment the dog/puppys hindquarters come up, praise him and,
if marker/clicker training, use your
marker word or clicker. Give the dog
verbal praise and a treat as a reward.
Once the process becomes consistent,
start using a cue such as go potty.
The moment the puppy squats, say
in a calm clear voice, go potty just
once. When hes finished, praise him.
If you start to have potty training
issues with an older dog, take
your dog to the vet to rule out any
medical problems.
Never punish a dog or puppy for going
potty in the wrong place. When you
scold/punish/frighten a dog for such
accidents, you will not get the results
you want.

How to prevent dirt

under your fingernails
while gardening
Drag your fingernails across a bar
of soap. Youll create a seal on the
undersides of your nails so dirt
cant collect beneath them. After
youve finished in the garden, use a
nailbrush to remove the soap and
your nails will be sparkling clean.

How to care for your

garden tools

If scrambling is a part of your day,

1. Rinse digging tools after each use. Dry

thoroughly. A stiff brush scrub provides
more thorough cleaning.
2. Bucket of sand moistened with linseed oil.
Dip tools into the abrasive, lubricating mix
a few times after using them.
3. Linseed oil is good for wood handles.
Hang a rag near the sand bucket to give
a quick wipe to wooden handles, too.
Note: Combustion risk. Allow oil-soaked
rags to dry in the open between uses
do NOT wad up! When disposing, dry
thoroughly first or soak with water before
placing in a closed metal can. Boiled
linseed oil has solvent added to it, so after
applying it to metal and wood, let it dry
completely before using the tool (about 24
hours) so the solvent will have evaporated.
4. Store tools indoors, hanging up!
Dont lean them against the garage wall,
touching the floor even if its paved.
Moisture is the enemy.
5. Sap and other residues can build up on
the blades of pruning shears. Wash them
with soap and a nail brush or scrub pad.
Dry well and replenish lubrication on
the pivot point only. A drop or two of a
penetrating product such as 3-in-One oil
is preferable to a lightweight spray lube.
Invest in a sharpening device meant
for shears a whetstone or a carbide
sharpener.
Stainless steel tools require almost nothing
for maintenance for years.
