WHOLE FOODS OR SUPPLEMENTS?

It is important to eat good sources of food. Everyone
should strive to have a good foundation of whole
foods in their diet. Supplements are very clean
sources of essential nutrients that we may
not get enough of in our food. They may
be more potent and absorb easier or
quicker or they may contain things
that our bodies make in limited
amounts. Supplements are
just what the name implies
... they add to our food
in a positive way to fill in
nutritional gaps. They become
very important for people who are
stressed or very busy or for athletes
that need specific nutrients to help them
recover from their training. As exercise and
stress increase so do nutritional requirements and
supplements can fill that void, said Scott Herkes,
a certified fitness nutrition coach and franchisee of two
Max Muscle Sports Nutrition stores.

KEY SUPPLEMENTS YOUR BODY NEEDS

Glycogen

For athletes who need explosive strength, muscle glycogen is key. Reduced muscle
glycogen is directly related to a reduction in explosive strength potential, said Scott
Herkes, a certified fitness nutrition coach and franchisee of two Max Muscle Sports
Nutrition stores. Build glycogen by eating oatmeal, low-fat yogurt or whole-wheat
pasta. Max A.R.M. (Anabolic Recovery Matrix) from Max Muscle Sports Nutrition
also replenishes glycogen and accelerates overall muscle recovery and repair.

Vitamin B
It supports a healthy metabolism by breaking down carbohydrates into sugars
(Vitamin B1) and is essential to preventative care in bones (Vitamin B12), specifically
helping improve bone mineralization and the inflammation of joints, said Dr. James
Rippe, world-renowned cardiologist, founder of The Rippe Lifestyle Institute, author of
The Joint Health Prescription and editor of the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine.
Find B12 in clams, mussels, crab, finfish and beef, and get vitamin B1 from leafy
green vegetables, potatoes and fortified cereals.

Glucosamine
This is a natural compound in the body that supports the fluid found around joints.
Glucosamine is a little trickier, as some of the best forms of glucosamine come
from the exoskeletons/outer shells of crustaceans such as shrimp, lobster, crab and
crawfish, said Dr. Rippe. Noshing on crustacean shells might be unpalatable, so
supplementing can help. That said there are a couple of plant-based foods containing
high concentrations of glutamineraw parsley and spinach being the most common.
