ABOUT ME
My name is Hilal, I’m 26 years old. Born in Turkey, educated
in France and then in the United States, trained in cell
biology and molecular genetics, and currently a research
scientist with a focus in atherosclerosis.
In other words, I’m lefty (I mean my brain), but I also
consider myself a creative. Coming to Parsons will allow for
those two parts of my brain to work in harmony, hopefully
creating meaningful contributions for social change in the
world.
Combination of science and art in design has always been
very fascinating to me. As a scientist and a future designer
I would like to improve human experiences and explore
different lenses of looking at the human condition.

My intent is to augment my background in science with an

enriched sense of design to take part in the social change I
mentioned above. I believe that being a part of the MFADT
program, surrounded with distinguished faculty members
and peers will broaden my ways of thinking and teach me
strong design thought processes, and in turn, I will bring
my faculties of science to my peers and the larger MFADT
program, for the collective observation of this fascinacting
intersection.

HIGH FIVE PROJECT: An Urban Diagnosis

Receiving a high five or giving a high five is an experience that we would define uplifting. Considering that

humans are electrochemical beings, I hypothesize that the act of high fiving results into an exchange of energy

and this is established by the passage of microorganisms from one hand to another, due to the fact that they

also are electrochemical beings.

To analyze this process I utilized agar petri dishes as a canvas and my paint brush was cotton swabs containing

samples from each interaction that were established by high fives. By latter, I have built the scaffold of this

process and the live medium has given it the color palette over the course of a 30 day incubation period.

The project, while being far from a scientific proof of my hypothesis, created results that portrayed the visual

beauty nature can create when left to its own devices, yet could not have been produced without the deliberate

intent of its designer.
