Baby Boomers And Boomerangs

Everyone needs to start planning for retirement now

Jeanelle Horcasitas
When I turned 19, I started my first real-world job with
the state of California. Even though I only held a student position, every paycheck I received took out a little bit extra that
went to my retirement. I often complained that I was too
young to even begin thinking about my retirement. However, my older (and wiser) co-workers urged me to continue
saving for my retirement and recommended that I open up
an individual retirement account or 401(k) plan. Although
I left this job years ago, the advice I received about securing
my future by saving up now resonates with me, especially as
I get older.
My grandparents have been an unfortunate example of
what many baby boomers are faced with today: working well
past the normal retirement age. Furthermore, I know that
my Generation Xer parents will suffer the same fate and will
need to work beyond what many consider to be the normal
retirement age. According to the Social Security Administration, those born between the 1940s and 1960s usually do
not retire until they are about 66 years old. Moreover, those
older adults who continue to work past the retirement age
are normally not working for a company that offers a pension or payout. In addition, many have been laid off from
companies that went under during the Great Recession. As
a result, baby boomers have been forced to start over, competing for minimum-wage jobs alongside young adults and
earning well below what they need to pay off their heavier
debts of a mortgage, a car or even student loan payments.
Another disadvantage facing baby boomers hoping to retire early is that more and more young adults are choosing
to move back home because of their own difficulties finding a job, despite spending years at a university to receive a
degree. In 2012, Richard Fry from the Pew Research Center
reported that 36 percent of the nations young adults ages

18 to 31-- the so-called millennial generation -- were living

in their parents home. These young adults have been referred to as the boomerang kids for leaving home and then
eventually returning back to Mom and Dads (normally baby
boomers or Gen Xers). Therefore, the issue of retirement is
prevalent not only for baby boomers but also for millennials.
In addition, the millennial generation is considered to be in
even worse shape than their parents because it is more difficult for them to secure a well-paying job, purchase a car or
begin saving up for a home in the future.
So, what can baby boomers do right now if they do not
have the luxuries of a pension or payout? Jonathan Clements
of MarketWatch illustrates the hypothetical but very realistic predicament that most baby boomers find themselves
in: Lets say your full Social Security retirement age is 66,
at which point you could get $1,400 a month, equal to
$16,800 a year. This is roughly the average amount that Social
Security recipients are entitled to. Additionally, those retiring earlier than the average age of 66 will receive a smaller
amount monthly. On the other hand, delaying retirement
can help increase the amount. Clements claims that delaying
benefits between the ages of 66 and 70 could increase the
amount to about $22,176 a year. However, this amount still
proves to be a bleak and unlivable income, especially for older adults who are still paying off their debt, their childrens
debt and possibly even high medical bills resulting from simply getting older in age.
Therefore, the best advice for baby boomers and millennials is simply to save what you can while you can. Particularly
for those a part of the baby boomer generation, it is crucial
that whatever job you may have, at least some of your paycheck is going to your savings account. Unfortunately, the
data above demonstrate that once older adults reach their
60s, there is usually only about a decade for them to save up
enough money to secure their future because the retirement

benefits simply wont cut it.

Millennials should follow the same advice. Although they
are young and still starting out, the time to act is now. Saving
a little bit each paycheck is crucial to securing a stable future.
Although the baby boomer and milliennial generations are
on opposite sides of the age spectrum, they share common
struggles in these hard economic times.
Retirement is no longer what is advertised on television and magazines. Its not about taking tropical vacations,
spending time with loved ones and enjoying yourself after
many years of hard work. Retirement has become a daunting
topic for both young and old. Therefore, it is never too early
to think about your retirement or change the circumstances
(if you are getting close to retirement) so that you may feel
peaceful and happy when you finally make the decision to
retire.

What A Pain

New CHapters

Dealing with arthritis

Chelle Cordero
Despite many comedic routines about waking up with
Arthur Itis, for those who suffer its no laughing matter.
Arthritis is an umbrella term for several dozen conditions,
making the diagnosis, treatment and management difficult.
Because of varying symptoms and different underlying
causes, the things that may work for one patient may be far
from ideal for another.
Just a few of the more common forms of arthritis include: osteoarthritis, which is the most common and
caused by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints; gout,
which is caused from a build-up of uric acid crystals in
the joints and other tissue; bursitis, which is caused when
a fluid filled sac at the joint that normally reduces friction becomes swollen and painful from overuse; bunions,
which are the enlargement of the joint at the base of the
big toe; and hammer toes, which are deformities caused by
dislocations and often result in painful sores.
Some forms of arthritis can be caused by infections,
such as reactive arthritis, which includes inflammation the
joints, eyes and parts of the gastrointestinal/genitourinary
system after infection, and infectious arthritis, which is
caused by blood-borne infections settling in joints. Autoimmune disorders lead the bodys immune system to attack healthy cells. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis,
which causes inflammation of smaller joints and can affect the internal organs, and psoriatic arthritis, which affects patients with chronic psoriasis (a skin condition) and
causes swollen joints, stiffness, reduced flexibility and fatigue.
Older Americans are more prone to suffering from a

form -- or forms -- of arthritis, but it is

not, as once believed, an old persons disease. Juvenile arthritis is the name given
to any form of arthritis that is diagnosed in
children under age 16; the most common
form of juvenilea arthritis is rheumatoid,
which comes in three forms -- systemiconset, polyarticular-onset and pauciarticular-onset -- all defined by the amount of
joints that are affected. More than twothirds of arthritis sufferers are under the age of 65; however, it is very common in adults over 65. Obese adults also
have a greater incidence of arthritic problems than those
who are in a normal weight range. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention indicated that 1 in 5 adults suffer
from some form of arthritis and that number is expected
to jump to 67 million by 2030. Since arthritis tends to
promote inactivity, which can lead to obesity, hypertension, diabetes and disability, the CDC arthritis to be a public health problem.
Occasional sudden flares where the pain and swelling
seem worse than usual may be discouraging. Although it
may seem easier to avoid moving when you wake feeling
stiff from arthritis, movement is one of the best things you
can do for yourself. Regular activity helps to strengthen
your muscles, lubricate your joints and keep your metabolism up. These things will help fight obesity, diabetes and
cardiac conditions. Walking is good for the hips and thigh
muscles and a great opportunity for fresh air and quiet
meditation. A stationary bike is good for low-impact, cardiovascular exercise. Do arm curls or reach for the ceiling with small weights to strengthen arm and shoulder

The National Institute on Aging recommends arthritis sufferers do range-of-motion exercises, like dancing,
to help keep you flexible; strengthening exercises with
weights to add to muscle strength; and aerobic or endurance exercises, like bicycle riding, to make your heart and
arteries healthier, help prevent weight gain, and also may
lessen swelling in some joints.
Thanks to grants and support from the CDC, the Arthritis
Foundation and the National Council on Aging are presently offering a free interactive online workshop that will

your arthritis as long as funds last. Signing up is easy. You

ISOLATION & ILLNESS

How loneliness is hurting your health

Sharon Naylor
Its supposed to be the golden years, not the lonely years. If youre finding yourself alone
more often than youd like, youre not alone. According to a 2010 study by the U.S. Census
Bureau, 11 million (28 percent) of people 65 or older lived alone, having been widowed,
divorced or never married. The AARP says that more and more older adults do not have
children, either. Add to that the reality that those with children and grandchildren may live
several states away, and many seniors are left with a home that is too quiet.
Whether from family distance, or from decreased mobility as you age, your world has
gotten smaller, and thats not good for your health. Here are some health risks related to
isolation:
1) A 2009 study from the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project says that seniors
who feel lonely and isolated report not having good physical and/or mental health.
2) Feeling lonely can increase risks of cognitive decline and dementia. Your brain needs
the stimulation of interaction, and having friends and family to talk to and spend time with
exercises the different areas of the brain, strengthening them. We are wired to be social
creatures, and not being social may have actual neurological detriments.
3) According to a 2012 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, social
isolation and feelings of loneliness are associated with a higher risk of mortality. For instance,
if you live alone and interact with few people, there may be no one to help you seek medical
attention, or pay attention to your symptoms when you are ill.
4) Social isolation is linked to chronic illnesses, such as arthritis and lung disease.
5) Isolation is a risk factor for depression. When depressed, you may forget to take your
medicines, have little to no appetite, lose or gain weight, and you may feel despondent
enough to harm yourself.
6) Isolation can make you vulnerable to elder abuse. If you are alone, the people who do
enter your home to care for you may take advantage of your isolated status.
7) Loneliness can cause high blood pressure. According to a 2010 study in Psychology and
Aging, there is a direct correlation between loneliness and higher systolic blood pressure.
8) Being isolated increases your risk of needing long-term care.
9) Being lonely increases negativity, which can further reduce your social circle when people
avoid you.
10) Being lonely can encourage unhealthy behaviors, like eating badly and not exercising.

Even without a spouse, kids or family members who can visit often, it is within your
power to combat loneliness and step out of isolation. The first step is acknowledging that you
may have gotten too comfortable being alone. You make and receive phone calls, and while
that interaction may be cheery, its not enough to foster a healthier lifestyle. So in addition to
calling loved ones and interacting on social media and Skype, consider the following smart
steps to ending your isolation:
Say hello to neighbors. If you see them outside, step outside to say a quick hello. Its quite
easy to strike up a friendly relationship with the people who live around you.
Ask neighbors whether there is a book club in the area, one that might be within walking
distance. You might not know that the locals get together once a month at alternating houses
to discuss books and enjoy snacks. Even if you cant go every month, youll belong to a group
and be more social.

Call your local senior center and ask to be put on their mailing list. Seniors centers often
host parties and social events, and they may have a free shuttle to take you there and back.
Call your local animal shelter and ask whether they need volunteers. From holding puppies
to manning the desk on adoption days, youll interact with people on a daily basis, perhaps
finding friends in your co-workers. Plus, you will be around blood pressure-lowering animals.
Volunteer elsewhere. At your library, ask for help in navigating the Internet to find
opportunities at VolunteerMatch, where new and ongoing volunteer positions are posted.
You might volunteer to simply cheer on runners at a 5k or read to children at a hospital.
Move to a high-quality seniors community. Its not a nursing home, but rather a
neighborhood filled with seniors your age, with planned activities and close proximity to
other seniors looking for social interaction.
Check your librarys events page. They will often hold author booksignings and lectures
that you can attend for free, interacting with others and enriching your life.
Take a class. Your town may have an adult education center with a long list of daytime and
evening classes in crafts, language, art history, writing, seniors yoga and other courses. You
might even qualify for a discount.
And of course, use your social media connections to plan events to bring your family and
friends to you. You might plan a lunch or a trip to the movies for a matinee, being the leader
in your own exit from loneliness.

ADVICE FOR SENIORS

Doug Mayberry

Security heads-up
I am an elderly widow and live alone
in a large house. Im
fearful that my surroundings are not
so secure as they Doug Mayberry
should be. I often
wake up when I hear a strange noise. What
might help calm me down?

Q:

A:

I understand, and here are some

suggestions that might prove
helpful. Install a security system, and make
certain you stake a highly visible security
companys warning sign. Secure sliding
glass doors and windows with wooden
dowels in the moving slots that will only

allow a couple of inches to open. Make

sure all entrances are well-lit. Motionsensing lights are important additions.
Keep bushes, shrubs and trees trimmed to
make your home more visible. When you
use valet parking or have your car repaired,
separate the one key needed by the service person from your ring and keep the
other keys. Make sure your house number
is prominently displayed should you need
to make a 911 call for help. Know and
stay in contact with your neighbors, and
keep them informed as to your activities
and vacation plans, and ask them to pick
up unwanted fliers and trash thrown on
your driveway when youre out of town.
Offer to do the same for them. Share your
familys phone numbers in case theres a
fire, a natural disaster, a stranger scouting
the neighborhood or a parked car sitting
at your curb that does not seem to be ap-

propriate.
There is no way to ensure that thieves will
not try to gain access to your home. Being
aware of that, be especially watchful and
alert during the holiday months, when
they are in greater need. Recently, l forgot
to lock my car while grocery shopping,
and a thief got my cellphone. Activating
security precautions is worth your time
and effort.

Lucky Grandparents
We are the parents of two daughters, whose ages are 3 and 6. All
four grandparents are alive. We struggle to
find appropriate holiday gifts for our parents. They all have their stuff and do not
really need more things. What can we do?

Q:
A:

Homemade and creative gifts are

what all grandparents love and are

New CHapters

most wanted. One idea is to purchase an

empty pillbox and fill it with jelly beans.
White ceramic coffee cups are available at
the dollar stores; assist the kids in drawing pictures or writing love notes for the
grandparents using ceramic paint. You
can also create a gift by using white paper plates and crayons. How about gifting
a greeting card that includes a come-along
meal at a restaurant or an invitation to visit
a zoo or park. In todays world, most photos are shot with digital cameras, but very
few are actually printed out. This means
grandparents bragging photo albums
have become big-time winning gifts. I
hope those thoughts prove to serve your
purposes.

PERFECT VISION

The best place to buy eyeglasses

Creators.com photo courtesy of Pixabay

Kristen Castillo

There are high-definition, personalized lenses

available today that make your vision clearer
than anyone ever thought possible.

Buying new glasses is a chance to improve your vision and look stylish at the
same time. Whether youre looking for
prescription glasses or readers, there are
many retailers to choose from, including
eyeglass shops, drug stores, box stores,
club stores and online retailers. Getting a
good deal is a bonus, too.
Eyeglass frames typically last one to five
years, and lenses sometimes need to be
changed as soon as six months into a prescription, particularly in cases of cataracts
or diabetes.
When its time for new glasses, wheres
the best place to buy them?

Getting Started

A frame stylist once told me, Your face

is a work of art; it deserves a great frame,
says Dr. April Jasper, who emphasizes that
consumers need to consider quality frames
and lenses.
One big misconception is that all glasses are the same. Frame quality can vary
greatly from one manufacturer to another,
says Jasper. You can tell the difference in
the quality of automobiles, in clothing and
in most products. Frames are no different.
Similarly, all lenses are not the same, especially because technology changes fast.
There are high-definition personalized lenses available today that make your
vision clearer than anyone ever thought
possible, and they make it clear while not
feeling you are even wearing glasses, says
Jasper. You can buy 20-year-old technology with 20-year-old problems or todays
technology with amazing optical quality.

Drug Store Designs

Snagging specs at the drug store or a

big-box store can be good for your wallet,
but the glasses might not be good for your

and a good selection by shopping in the

childrens section of your local eyeglass retailer. Brenner scored kid glasses and raves
the prices are pint size, and you wont
find the same pair on every face.

Make Your Readers into Regulars

vision.
Optician Phyllis Lubarsky, owner of Outer Vision Inc., says glasses available over the
counter are simply magnifiers, and both
the left and right are the same.
She warns that without guidance from
an eye professional, consumers often buy
glasses that are too strong, which speeds
up the process of the eyes requiring stronger and stronger prescriptions until they
end up back at the optician or eye doctor,
as they dont make them strong enough in
OTC.

Is Online OK?

Online retailers offer many deals, but

they can have disadvantages.
They sell older, less technologically
advanced products for less than a brickand-mortar store will sell newer, high-tech
products that are personalized for each patient, says Jasper.
Lubarsky also reminds consumers that
buying glasses online lacks customer service from eye experts.
There is no professional to help and
guide you in determining the right fit and
correct measurements and what frames

best suit your prescription, she says.

Look for Sales

Local stores run seasonal sales to urge

shoppers to use up their savings, says
Nancy Brenner, who blogs as the Garment
District Diva. She recommends free home
try-on offers: from Warby Parker, the destination eyewear shop which made it cool
to wear glasses even if you have 20/20 vision.

Consider Kids Specs

them for a bargain and then transform
them into the real deal. One of Brenners
friends bought reading glasses at a local
drug store and then filled her prescription
at her local eyewear store.

Quality Matters

Youll get high style if you buy designer

glasses, but that comes with hefty cost.
When you go for a designer brand you
will pay more as there are licensing fees
that the manufacturer incurs, says Lubarsky.
No matter the frames, if you pay for
quality, theyll typically last a long time.

6 Tips To Keeping Seniors Safe At Home

Safety is a big concern for seniors and their families, especially as more baby boomers are embracing aging at home.
Homes theyve owned for decades that were perfect for raising
children may not be as accommodating for people who may
suffer from poor eye sight, unsteady balance or memory issues.
Many home updates can help protect senior family members, allowing them to enjoy their homes for many more
years. These tips will help protect the privacy and safety of
older residents.
* Home exterior security - A security alarm system is always a good idea, and many will also connect to
fire protection services as well. Sliding and patio doors are
among the least secure entrances to a home, so install a
Master Lock 265DCCSEN Door Security Bar to resist any
type of forced entry into the home.
* Keep extra keys secure - Many family members
of seniors like to have access to a home so they can check
on their loved ones. Instead of hiding the keys under a fake
rock in the yard, protect them with a Master Lock 5422D
Key Safe. The safe attaches over the door handle for easy
accessibility and requires a four-button push code to reveal
the keys. Its also great for emergency situations if a family
member accidentally locks the keys inside the house on a

ments like wills and legal documents, a fire-resistant safe

from Sentry Safe is a good option.

* Create a flexible schedule - Because theyre retired, seniors are able to leave the house for different activities during the day. Oftentimes, seniors will get into a regular schedule like meeting a group of friends for breakfast at

* Digital safety is important, too - In todays digital world, computer passwords are the keys to valuable personal information. It is recommended that you use a unique

so many write them down, which can make them vulnerable to theft. The Master Lock Vault is a free, digital safe deposit box perfect for securing passwords, credit card numbers and digital copies of important documents, and it can

What you need to know to control this silent killer

Most people assume they only need to take their medication when they are sick, meaning when they experience symptoms. But in the case of hypertension, this type of thinking
could kill you.
Patients who have hypertension are often completely asymptomatic - thats the reason
hypertension is often called the silent killer. The belief that symptoms such as headaches,
nose bleeds, nervousness, sweating, difficulty sleeping or facial flushing are signals to take
blood pressure medication is a myth.
Nonadherence to hypertension medication is a huge challenge. Research shows that one
in three American adults suffer from high blood pressure, but only 47 percent effectively
treat their disease to keep blood pressure levels under control.

Higher risk for heart attack, stroke

Express Scripts specialist pharmacist Ed Dannemiller recently spoke with a patient who
was 40 days late to refill her blood pressure prescription.
When I asked her about the delay, she said she only takes her medication when she feels
stressed or has a headache. The problem with this is that patients with hypertension may feel
perfectly fine before suffering a heart attack or stroke, says Dannemiller.
Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80, but consistent levels above 140/90 require
medical attention. Simply keeping a patients blood pressure under control decreases the
risk of heart attack by 25 percent, stroke by 33 percent and heart failure by 50 percent.
But the only way to have a precise measurement is through a blood pressure reading.

Theres a lot to like about

Great Lakes Family Care.

Become an engaged patient

I encourage patients to become engaged in their own health and keep track of their
blood pressure readings, which can help prevent unnecessary hospitalizations or ER visits,
Dannemiller explains.
For patients with white-coat hypertension - those whose blood pressure rises from stress
in the doctors office - a home blood pressure monitor is a good option.
Dannemiller offers these useful tips for patients monitoring their pressure at home:
Take blood pressure readings in a seated position with arm at the heart level
To regulate the monitor, discard the first reading
Keep a record of your blood pressure levels to bring to your doctors appointment
This additional data will help your physician better understand your condition and make
better medical decisions to ensure healthier outcomes.

Lifestyle changes can help

In addition to staying adherent to blood pressure medication, regardless of symptoms, the

following lifestyle modifications also can improve cardiovascular health:
Consume a heart-healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in salt, fat and
cholesterol
Engage in regular aerobic physical activity
Manage your weight, limit alcohol consumption and do not smoke

Value of specialized understanding

Even with lifestyle modifications, most patients need at least two medications to reach
their blood pressure goal, says Dannemiller.
Intervention and education from specialist pharmacists provide an important resource to
improve medication adherence. When patients understand the value of their treatment and
embrace good cardiovascular health, they bring a little more noise to this silent killer. For

Old Dogs Learning New Tricks

New technology benefits old-timers

Chelle Cordero
It was a very different world when many older adults were growing up. Televisions (for
those who had one) were black-and-white with a limited number of channels, books had
pages to turn, phones had rotary dials and were connected with actual wires, no man had
yet walked on the moon, and on line actually meant standing with others and waiting
your turn.
Over
the
decades,
there
have
been
numerous inventions and
advancements. Seniors have
been forced to learn to use
new-fangled machines
and technologies. Todays
employers require computer
and technological skills. At
home, televisions, washer/
dryer combinations, stoves
and even vacuum cleaners
work off of programmable
electronic
controls.
Facetime on phone and
computer screens makes
staying in touch with family members easier when miles separate them. Email and digital
photos allow for instant sharing and interactions that can help to alleviate the loneliness
and exclusion felt by less mobile seniors whose families live far away.
A Pew Research Center 2013 tracking survey regarding use of the Internet by seniors
disclosed, Two different groups of older Americans emerge. The first group (which
leans toward younger, more highly educated, or more affluent seniors) has relatively
substantial technology assets, and also has a positive view toward the benefits of online
platforms. The other (which tends to be older and less affluent, often with significant
challenges with health or disability) is largely disconnected from the world of digital
tools and services, both physically and psychologically. Some older adults are limited
when it comes to embracing new technology because of physical and visual impairments,
financial hardship, limited incomes, difficulty learning to use new technologies, and an
unwillingness to accept something they got along without for so many years.
There are several devices that make life easier and safer for seniors. Some help the
elderly age in place and continue to live independently. Such devices monitor their
well-being, keep them in close contact with emergency and medical response teams,
and track their fitness and activity levels. Wireless sensors, worn as a pendant, feature
an emergency push-button that allows someone to call for assistance even when they
cant reach a phone. Many models also work in conjunction with sensors that can detect
unusual events such as a fall or a lack of motion. Activity trackers worn by the user record
physical activity (from how many steps are taken to full exercise routines) and let the user
know whether they are maintaining a healthy level of fitness. Programmable electronic
medicine dispensers ensure that pills are taken on time, which is especially useful when
multiple pills are required on a daily basis.

The right technology can help enhance a seniors experience while accommodating
visual, auditory or dexterity needs. E-readers allow the convenience of 24-hour shopping
for new reading material from the users location, On these devices, one can store
hundreds of books, making them ideal for traveling, and users can download newspapers
to easily switch between popular books and current events. Most dedicated e-readers
offer multiple font sizes, making it convenient for the visually impaired. At least one, the
Amazon Kindle, has a text-to-speech feature that allows readers to listen to a book. There
are no complicated connects; the e-reader downloads new material through Wi-Fi or 4G
technology.
The telyHD TV adapter (which requires an HDMI connection) allows seniors to Skype
with family. Computers such as the HP TouchSmart enable seniors to use social media
sites, exchange emails, play games and do online research with touch screen, keyboard
or voice activation. The Samsung Touch3 cellphone offers a simplified app menu, large
buttons and a usage plan that caters more to the individuals needs. Electronic keyfinders that fit on a key ring chirp when remotely activated for easy location. Smart-pens
can transcribe the written word into electronic lists that can be emailed or filed on a
digital device.

reen Acres is a home away from home for me. Since I

can no longer be at home with my husband due to my physical
limitation, we had to find a place I could call my home away from
home. Green Acres came into our life and filled that need we both had. I get the care that I need
and my husband no longer needs to be my caregiver. Now he is once again my husband and best
friend.
We chose Green Acres because of the spacious apartments, the sense of family and community. My
husband and family are able to come and visit my apartment and stay for a meal at any time. I
am able to have my typewriter I love in my apartment along with any of my other personal items
from home. One of the other perks of living here is playing Green Acres grand piano.
If someone would ask me if I wanted to move, I would say NO. Green Acres is my home away
from home.

Divorced Women And Social Security

A Social Security expert answers questions

Tom Margenau

Q:

I was married to my husband for 35 years before

he divorced me and married a much newer and
better-equipped model (if you get my drift). They have even
had a child together! Im 62, and my ex is 65. If all his extra
physical activity (if you get my drift again) causes the bum to
drop dead, are the trophy wife and little love child going to
get all his Social Security leaving me with nothing?

A:

Dont worry. Youll get a full share of Mr. Wonderfuls

Tom Margenau
Social Security. Whenever two women are due benefits on the same mans Social Security account, they dont offset
each other. Each gets whatever Social Security spousal benefits she is due.
And you may not even have to wait until he dies from exhaustion. You are possibly
due divorced wifes (not widows) benefits already. At your age, you would be due about
one-third of his basic Social Security benefit -- but only to the extent that it exceeds
whatever you might be due on your own Social Security account. In other words, if a
third of his Social Security is more than your own retirement benefit, then you will get
that benefit plus whatever extra you are due on his record to take you up to that onethird level.
But if youve worked any decent amount of time, then it is very likely that your own
benefit exceeds one-third of his. Then you would have to wait until he keels over, and
you could be due much higher divorced widows benefits.
And in case you are wondering, here is what Ms. Trophy may be due.
While hes alive, she and little Junior cant get Social Security until he files for benefits
himself. At that point, Junior will get an amount equal to half of Daddys benefit rate. Ms.
Trophy is potentially due benefits as a young wife caring for a child. But because of rules
that limit how much a family can get, she probably wont qualify for anything. When
he dies, then both Junior and Trophy could get survivor benefits. However, if Trophy is
working, her earnings would prevent her from getting any Social Security.

Q:

I was married from March 2001 until April 2009. Then we divorced. I
then married the same man in November 2010 and divorced him a second time in January 2014. So we were married for more than 10 years, although
it was in two separate stretches of time. Will I be able to get Social Security on his
record?

A:

You lucked out. The rule does say your marriage must have reached its 10th
anniversary before you can be considered potentially eligible for divorced
wifes benefits. But two periods of marriage to the same man that, combined, add up to
at least 10 years will count if the second marriage occurs before the end of the year following the year in which you got the first divorce. In other words, because you got divorced in April 2009, you had until the end of 2010 to remarry the guy and stay within
the Social Security duration of marriage rules. And you just squeaked in by marrying
him in November. So now Ive got a question for you: Why the heck did you marry the
guy the second time? I know, love can be strange!

Q:

I have been a stay-at-home mom all my life. I am 63, and my husband is

62. We have been married for 20 years. He doesnt plan to take his Social
Security until he is 66. But Id like to get my share of my husbands benefits now. I
contacted Social Security and learned that I cant get any of his Social Security until
he files for benefits. Im sort of OK with that. But here is the catch. He was married
before for more than 10 years to another woman. She never remarried. She is 63.
And I just learned that she has filed for and is receiving my husbands Social Security.
How in the world can that be fair?

A:

This is one of those government rules that sound ill-thought-out and wacky
until you learn the reasoning behind them. And that law does say a currently
married woman cant get any of her husbands Social Security until he is getting benefits
himself. But a divorced woman can get benefits from her ex, as long as he is old enough
for Social Security, even if he is not yet a beneficiary himself.
The reasoning behind the law has to do with the issue of dependency. A woman qualifies for a portion of her husbands Social Security benefits because she is considered to
be financially dependent on him. In other words, the law assumes that a woman who
doesnt have her own job and her own Social Security was being supported by her husband while he was working and therefore should be supported by a portion of his Social
Security once he retires.
So as long as your husband is still working and not getting Social Security, the law
just assumes that he is supporting you with his wages or other income. Or to put that
another way, if he doesnt need his Social Security, then you dont need his Social Security, either.
But the law cant make those assumptions for a divorced woman.Your husband is very
likely not supporting this woman, whom he divorced more than 20 years ago. So under the dependency guidelines, the rules say she has a right to claim some of his Social
Security. And as I pointed out in a prior answer, anything paid to this ex-wife will not
reduce what you are due when your husband finally does retire.

GOLD YEARS VOLUNTEERING

How to help out your community

Anica Wong
For many, retirement is a time to relax and catch up on all of the books
that you didnt have time to read between your job and raising kids. Retirement is for cruises and beach vacations, time spent with friends and
cribbage. But your golden years can also be a great time for volunteering,
especially if you havent done so before.
Senior volunteers make a significant impact in volunteering because
they are able to impart their lifetime of skills and experiences to benefit
our communities pressing needs, says Ursula Walsh, OneOCs director
of volunteer services.
OneOC, a full-service nonprofit resource center located in Orange
County, California, is one of many organizations around the country that
works alongside the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP. This
program is one of the largest volunteer networks for people 55 or older,
according to the Corporation for National and Community Service, its
parent organization. RSVP helps seniors become active in their community, connecting them with others and developing their skills.
OneOC was on board with RSVP because of the areas growing population of seniors. Walsh says there are currently 387,600 seniors living
in Orange County. This number will increase to 800,000 by 2025. And
Orange County is not alone in an aging population. According to the Administration on Aging, those 65 or older were 13 percent of the overall

5 tips to slash prescription drug costs

Todays rising health care costs can feel out
of control. Fortunately, prescription drugs are
an exception. Consider these five simple ways
to save money on your prescriptions so you
can stay healthy and maintain your budget.

1.

Ask about generic or lower-cost

equivalents.Your health plan has a
list of covered prescription drugs,
called a formulary. Within that list are preferred drugs, which have a lower copayment
cost for the patient. These are clinical or therapeutic equivalents to higher-priced brand
drugs.
Always ask your prescriber or pharmacist,
Is there a generic for that? Its a fair question. Many physicians write for the familiar
brands, the tried and true, or the newest,
most highly marketed drug in the therapy
class. Until you ask, they may not be well acquainted with lower-cost equivalents on your
particular plans formulary.

2.

Dont be duped by drug coupons.

Hundreds of high-priced brand
drugs offer coupons that apply to
the consumers share of the drugs cost. But
beware: A temporary discount may end up
on copayments just by choosing a preferred pharmacy. Chances are good that a

difference in premium amount.

3.

Use preferred retail pharmacies for acute medications. Many prescription plans offer a preferred network of retail pharmacies within a
wider network. These plans allow you to save between $5 and $10

4.

Use home delivery for chronic or maintenance medications. With

home delivery, many patients can save up to 33 percent on their copayment costs and have the medication delivered right to their door.

Home delivery is a safe and convenient way to obtain medications that you
use long term. Many pharmacy plans will provide you with a 90-day supply
for a lower copayment. Be sure to tell your doctor that you use home delivery
so your prescription can be written for a 90-day supply.
Theres an important bonus that can save you even more: Patients using
home delivery are more likely to take their medication as prescribed (see No.
5).

5.

that untreated hearing loss impacts our lives? It can lead to

communication problems with family, friends, and colleagues and
can lead to irritability, stress, isolation, cognitive decline, and even
early onset of dementia.

Take your medications as prescribed. While it might be tempting to

stretch your medication dollar by skipping daily doses, this can be
harmful to your health and end up costing you significantly more
money to treat the health complications that could have been avoided.
Adherence to your prescribed therapy is the best way to make sure you get
the most from your pharmacy benefit. Take your medication at the proper
time and frequency as indicated by your doctor, and refill and renew prescriptions as early as possible so you are never empty-handed. Express Scripts offers mobile apps, as well as auto-refill and renewal reminder programs to help
you stay on track.

Thats why its important to get your hearing checked.

Treating hearing loss is key to preserving your health.
Many prevalent health conditions in baby boomers
and seniors have a very strong link with hearing loss.
In fact, left untreated, hearing loss can affect cognitive
brain function especially in older people, and is
associated with the early onset of dementia.1

If you find yourself asking others to repeat themselves because your hearing isnt what it used to be,
you arent alone. Hearing loss affects about 20 percent
of American adults; thats 48 million people. Moreover,
by age 65, one out of three individuals has diminished
hearing. Over half of Americans who are 75 or older
have the health issue. And this particular problem
doesnt just affect the senior population; an estimated
30 children per 1,000 have less than perfect hearing.
Though millions of adults suffer, only one out of five
people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually
wears one. Moreover, 26 million Americans between
the ages of 20 and 69 have high-frequency hearing loss
because of exposure to loud sounds or noise at work or
in leisure activities. Often the older you are the worse your hearing.
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders,
sounds can be harmful when they are too loud, even for a brief time, or when they are both
loud and long-lasting. People of all ages, including children, teens, young adults and older
people, develop noise-induced hearing loss, or NIHL. If you are a baby boomer who attended a lot of rock concerts in the 60s and 70s, chances are you are paying for that now.
NIHL can be prevented by wearing earplugs or preventive devices when involved in a
loud activity -- such as using power tools or attending a very loud concert. If you are a
grandparent, keep your grandchild safe by protecting their ears, and dont be afraid to remind parents to do the same thing. Most important, have your hearing tested.
Audiologist Sharon Green says, I see patients every day who benefit enormously from
treatment. Unfortunately, a large number of them have needlessly suffered by waiting too
long to seek help.
Green says its important to recognize the signs of hearing loss: inattentiveness; buzzing
or ringing in the ears; failure to respond to spoken words; muffled hearing; or constant frustration in hearing speech or other sounds. Untreated hearing loss is tied to social isolation,
depression, early exit from the workplace and a reduced quality of life. New research also has
found a strong link between the degree of hearing loss and the risk of developing dementia.
To fit a hearing aid that is right for the patient, an audiologist must first determine the
hearing lifestyle of the patient. Someone who lives with a lot of background noise needs different technology than someone who lives a very quiet lifestyle.
Modern hearing aids are much improved over those that your parents might have worn.
Audiologists who have been practicing for a few decades have witnessed a dramatic change
in the delivery of hearing care services.
Remember, however, that hearing aids are designed to aid a persons hearing. They cant
restore human hearing, nor will they stop the progress of hearing loss. Moreover, it does
take time to learn to live with a hearing aid. A dedicated professional who is willing to make
adjustments to the hearing device can speed up the process.
I suggest people familiarize themselves with the signs (of hearing loss) and seek a hearing
assessment from an audiologist if they have a question about their hearing or a loved ones
hearing, Green says. Treatment is often easier and more effective than people think.
