it is a) your own writing b) not pasted, stuck in, or photo copied notes
3. Section A is about Rehearsal and is made up of little part a,b, and c
ALWAYS GIVES QUOTES FROM THE TEXT IN YOUR ESSAYS AND
ANALYSE THESE QUOTES!!!!!
Save your best rehearsal techniques for little part c, as this counts the most marks.
4. Section B will be a question on How would you direct your actors to perform,
and this would be either to show the differences between the characters or to
create Comedy or to show that Lysistrata is the strongest, wisest. I have a
feeling they will either as you how to direct the Chorus or ask How you will
create Comedy. Do prepare for a question about relationship as well.

SHOULD ALSO BE YOUR AIMS AS A DIRECTOR
Much of the Aristophanes Comedy rises from the Title
character and her methods of trying to end the
Peloponnesian War. Her main method of persuading
the women to withhold sex from the men, in an
attempt to end the war/conflict. Ironically this causes

more conflict than anything else. This was one of his aims
MAKE IT YOURS AS WELL.
Aristophanes Comedy contains serious undertones
Why? Because he was writing in the time of the Peloponnesian war when
people were demoralised by the conflict between Athens and the
Peloponnesian League, politicians were corrupt, it was a great and long time
of Conflict. (431 404 BC).

MAKE SERIOUS UNDERTONES ONE OF YOUR AIMS AS WELL!!!

Aristophanes was forward thinking and makes L the play
forward-thinking in terms of the fact that he challenges ideas about
sexual relations and the power of women in patriarchal
society. This was one of his aims. Would it be one of your aims as director?
LYSISTRATA IS AN OLD COMEDY BECAUSE IT
CONTAINS, FARCICAL DEVICES AND RHETORICAL
DEVICES. WILL YOUR COMEDY BE AN EXAMPLE OF AN OLD
GREEK COMEDY IN THE SENSE THAT IT TOO WILL HAVE
FARCICAL DEVICES. REMEMBER FARCICAL IS FUNNY
As well as Humour Aristophanes COMEDIES always
contained a political message. He was writing 20 years on into
the Peloponnesian War. He highlights the fultility of War through his
Comedy. Will this be your aim as director???
Lysistrata is a combination of old comedy and new
comedy old comedy because it is about Topical events (the war) and
focuses on real people. New Comedy because of his use of Stock Characters
and general events. Will your aims be the same??? Will you have stock
characters and used topical and general events??? Yes general the women
protesting at Greenham Common. Topical because it highlights the fultility of
war. Who will be your stock characters?
In old comedies the chorus was often dressed as
horses or birds. Will you break away from this convention? Why?
OLD COMEDIES USED A PARADOS/OPENING SONG. THIS
WAS AN OLD COMEDY DEVICE. THEY ALSO TOOK FROM
NEW COMEDIES THE FEATURES OF BALLADS, SEXUAL
INNUENDOS, SEXUAL DANCES AND MOVEMENTS. WILL
YOU HAVE SEXUAL DANCES, MOVEMENTS AND INNUENDOS IN
YOUR PLAY?

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!

IN GREEK COMEDIES THE MOST OF THE HUMOUR WAS

OFTEN DELIVERED BY THE CHORUS. THEY SOMETIMES
SANG TO THE AUDIENCE. THIS WAS CALLED A PARABIS.
MAKE SURE YOUR CHORUS SINGS THEIR PARTS TO THE
AUDIENCE AND USE BACKING TRACKS OF SONGS LIKE WE
DISCUSSED IN CLASS BUT ALSO OTHER EIGHTIES SONGS. I WILL
PROVIDE YOU WITH A LIST. THIS PART HAS TO BE SUNG STRAIGHT
TO THE AUDIENCE. THERE ARE MANY SECTIONS IN LYSISTRATA
WHICH CAN BE SUNG BY THE CHORUS, DIRECTLY TO THE

AUDIENCE. BECAUSE IT IS DIRECTLY TO THE AUDIENCE WE CALL

IT AN ASIDE.
MANY GREEK COMEDIES RIDICULED Athenian
institutions or powerful people. Who will your comedy
ridicule or oppose??

Who was in charge of Britain and England in the eighties??? Look it up on the
internet.
More aims of aristophanes comedy. Decide which ones you
will use in your play!!!!!
Actors in old comedies wore masks
Jokes in old comedies were often political
The chorus in old comedies were large usually 24 people.
Its movements were always choreographed. Remember to quote
script when you discuss choreography
There were many victims in old comedies such as deformed people,
people with bad manners etc In your Comedy this would be the men who
cannot control their sexual urges.
A lot of the humour in old comedies was slapstick and very
visual. Will your comedy be slapstick and visual???
OLD COMEDIES CONTAINED CRUDE JOKES, BOTH SPOKEN AND
VISUAL. WILL YOU HAVE THAT???
