The reason why he is so famous is because there are people who still identify with
his thoughts, ideas, and spiritual enlightenment.
Korea also has its own Confucius, who was a famous scholar.
That is who I am going to be talking about today Toegye Yi Hwang.
Im going to show you why he is considered Koreas Confucius by talking about his
character and the way he lived his life. Well also learn the morals from his ideas and
teachings.
Please keep in mind that there may be some difficult words derived from Chinese
characters as well as his theories.
First, historically, what all famous scholars have in common is that they were noble
and wise men. Here, theres a quote that shows Toegyes true character. Whats
clear and easy to understand is the teachers studies. Whats just and fair is the
teachers way. Whats soft like the spring wind and like an auspicious cloud is the
teachers virtue. Whats relevant and candid are the teachers writings.
The importance and depth of his writings were like mountain peaks and ponds,
however, when you read his teachings, youll know that he is a man of virtue.
This quote shows how Toegye was a deep character.

Second, Toegyes way of life was simple and modest.

He preferred simplicity over splendor, and modesty over putting on airs. He wanted
to live amongst nature rather than to be rich and powerful. He wanted a life full of
virtue and enlightenment rather than exercising power in the real world.
This is a poem that shows how Toegye refused wealth and power.
In my small and cozy hut
There are only books that line my walls.
The people of the past are all gone
However, their words still remain.
This poem shows how he avoided a life of wealth and power and how he wanted to
lead a life with nature.
Third, I will try to briefly explain the main point of his teachings, Yigiron and
Shimseongjeong.
The Chinese characters Yi and Gi in Yigiron meant the origins of the existence of
humans and objects.
This especially applied to the humans shimseongjeong, nature or disposition.
The character for shim means a persons heart, the character, seong means a
persons disposition, and the character for jeong means a persons feelings.

In other words, shimseongjeong mainly means a persons disposition and feelings.

This explains the existence of a persons heart and how disposition is the essence of
the heart and feelings are recognized as what drives the heart.

Shimsengjeong as Im writing this.
Finally, Ill touch on Toegye Yi Hwangs education theory.
Toegyes objective with education theory wasnt knowledge.
The most important aspect of this theory was putting things to practice. This kind of

He mentioned that not applying what you learn to real life was academically
dangerous.
Nowadays, the children and adults may have the intellect, but their actions and the
way they live their lives do not compare to those people of the past
Toegye was already cautioning and alerting many scholars and people about this
societal issue hundreds of years ago.
If you get deep into Toegyes character, way of life, thoughts, and educational
theories, you can see that was far from ordinary.
I personally agree with his teachings and enlightenment.
