AC Signals and Power Tutorial Guide

This document contains 4 practice problems from a tutorial on AC signals and power in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. The problems involve finding rms values, phasors in circuits, identifying positive-sequence or negative-sequence sources in 3-phase systems, and calculating line-to-line voltage, line current, and power delivered in a wye-connected load.

Tutorial AC Signals and Power

1.

ME2143/ME2143E

Find the rms value of v(t) = 15 + 10 cos(20t).

(Hambley, 2011: P5.17 Answer: 16.58 V )

2.

Consider the circuit shown in Figure P5.49. Find the phasors Is, V, IR, IL, and IC. Compare the
peak value of iL(t) with the peak value of is(t). Do you find the answer surprising? Explain.

Figure P5.49
(Hambley, 2011: P5.49 Answer: 50 L 90o mA)
3.

A three-phase source has

van(t) = 100 cos(t 60o) V
vbn(t) = 100 cos(t + 60o) V
vcn(t) = -100 cos(t) V
Is this positive-sequence or a negative-sequence source? Find time-domain expressions for
vab(t), vbc(t) and vca(t).
(Hambley, 2011: P5.93)

4.

A balanced wye-connected three-phase source has line-to-neural voltage of 440 Vrms. Find
the RMS line-to-line voltage magnitude. If this source is applied to a wye-connected load
composed of three 30 ohms resistances, find the RMS line current magnitude and the total
power delivered.
(Hambley, 2011: P5.96 Answers: 762.1 Vrms, 14.67 Arms, 19.36 kW)
