The website provides a comprehensive way of gathering basic marine mammal
research information.

Covers original research on form and function, evolution, systematics,


physiology, biochemistry, behavior, population biology, life history, genetics and
conservation.

Abstract: The Society for Marine Mammalogy Journal website is especially useful when looking
for professional articles, review articles, notes, opinions and letters. The society publishes
significant new findings on marine mammals. This research comes from original research
regarding marine mammal evolution, systematics, physiology, biochemistry, behavior,
population biology, genetics, ecology, conservation and life history to name a few. This
information is notably appropriate to students interested in wildlife research because it provides a
large database of professional documents to access and study. The site also gives valuable
direction to writing scientific documents regarding how to cite literature, format tables and
figures, standard text, submission of manuscripts and scholarship opportunities.
Tips:

The journals website has a side panel on the left side with more pages to navigate. The
headings say Guide for Authors, Read the Journal Now and Availability Over Seas.

On the main page there is a link to sign up for the journal and become a member.
Clicking the link will send you to a page to sign up.

In the top right there lies a panel called For Students. The site provides more valuable
information for students becoming involved in marine mammal research. The site appears
cluttered, but patience and searching should help yield desired information from this side
site.

If you are looking to get involved in marine mammal research this is a great place to
look for opportunities in jobs, internships, graduate positions and more. The job
search tool allows for marine mammal related searches.

Abstract: Texas A&M Wildlife Job board is a useful database with many job postings related to
careers, training, volunteering, graduate positions, internships, undergraduate research and
seasonal positions in a variety of wildlife fields. Each job posting has a clear, outlined
application process and links to the companys website for more information. The database was
created and is managed by the Department of Wildlife and Fishery Sciences at Texas A&M
University. The job board can be refined to marine mammal positions by typing marine
mammal in the job board search bar. This particular job board is free and updated almost daily.
The website provides a wide variety of options for a wildlife student to get their feet wet in
research.
Tips:

The job board can appear daunting when you first arrive at the page. Use the search bar to
refine your search and use the side panel for different categories of postings.

There is an FAQ and Guidelines section on the front page you can visit for any further
questions.

important tool to use if you plan on pursuing research.

The website also acts as a portal to other related marine mammal websites.

Abstract: This webpage provides interested students a way to search what is happening in the
world of marine mammals regarding research and conservation issues. The North Atlantic
Marine Mammal Commission is an international body for cooperation on the conservation,
management and study of marine mammals in the north Atlantic. The webpage offers meeting
and event dates, documents, publications and an excellent news archive. The news archive is
practical for following current policy changes and research news. NAMMCO News Archive is
an advantageous news site for students interested in wildlife research, because it presents news
from a scientific and educated background in the marine mammal sciences. Students and recent
graduates applying to jobs should find this site pertinent for interview material.
Tips:
- Use the URL to the main page of NAMMCO News Archive. From there utilize the search
bar to pinpoint what marine mammal news that is of interest.

Abstract: The Marine Mammals Research and Conservation Discussion (also known as
MARMAN on the website) provides an accessible and easy way to connect marine mammal
researchers, people of interest and affiliates together. The list was established on August 6th,
1993, through the University of Victoria. The site is public and meant to serve researchers and
managers working with marine mammals. The discussion forum has multiple archival sites
providing information on past years discussions. When this site is utilized in its fullest form,
students and graduates can find information on what researchers deal with on a daily basis, what
sort of problems they run into and how they communicate with one another. The site seems
daunting at first, follow the tips listed below to subscribe to the discussion forum.

-Archives can be accessed through the links near the top of the page. Older archives can
be accessed through http://web.uvic.ca/~marmamed/. The more recent archives are listed
on the website ( articles since August 2005.)

arrive on the page. This is not the case at all. The database contains an enormous amount of
scientific papers regarding wildlife and ecology studies. This database is especially useful to
future marine mammal researchers because of the ability to use an advanced search to find
relevant papers to your interests. If you are looking for a variable, large collection of papers on
marine mammals and other wildlife and ecology fields, this is your best site. The database is
hosted through Pennsylvania State University.
Tips:

Use the top three search bars to pinpoint your subject or article of interest.

Refine your search results by using the websites far left panel. This panel allows you to
refine your search by choosing source type, subject, limits and publication type.

Use the Data Newest button to get the newest articles and information. This button is
located just above the search results.

Provides students with information on statistics of endangered species related to


government research. Since many marine mammals are classified as endangered or
threatened, this is a useful site to find reliable data.

Abstract: This website does not provide a large amount of data, but does provide helpful
statistics for endangered species across this board. This site is useful for looking at the amount of
endangered species in the U.S. ( including marine mammals.)
Tips:

Once you arrive at the webpage by using the URL listed at the top, click on the second
excel spreadsheet link titled 387 - Threatened and Endangered Wildlife and Plant
Species--Number: 2009.

Click on the Excel or PDF link to bring you to the statistics page.

Use the tables to sort through data.

Abstract: The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, also known as CGP, is a finding tool
for publications made by the Federal Government. The website provides access to descriptive
records, both historical and current. You can search from the authoring agency, title, subject and
general key word. There are multiple levels of complexity you may use to refine your search.
Marine mammal articles found on this site will prove useful, varied and insightful.

Abstract: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (also known as NOAA for
short) is a government agency within the Department of Commerce. Their National Marine
Mammal Laboratory website is especially useful for discovering valuable information regarding
marine mammal species, programs, publications and an assortment of marine mammal research
tools. The website can direct you to multiple research projects currently being conducted by the
government and has available government documents regarding these projects. As a wildlife
sciences student this site is especially valuable if you are interested in working for the
government.
Tips:

Refine your Google search by typing NOAA National Marine Mammal Laboratory into
the search bar.

Use the websites side panel to navigate through program information, personnel, current
research, publications, NMML library, etc.

Because the website is extensive and has a lot of information, be sure to browse around to
explore different aspects of marine mammal research. The website focuses on current
research projects but also can lead you to an educational data base and government
information.
