Thestrategybehindthisinvestmentisveryprecise.Anetworkofmediumcapacityplantsiscreated,
eachplantwithacapacityof500kw,spreadonornearthemajorhighwayssothatthetransportation
ofthefinalgoodsmaybefacilitated,andgeographicallyplacedsothattherawmaterialisexploited
asefficientlyaspossible.Thefocusedproductionofbiomassisalsocateredfor,inthecaseofthe
plantsanalyzedhere,itisalgaecultivatedonsite.However,itisimportanttostressthatanyandall
typesofbiomasscanbeprocessedwiththeproperpretreatment,offeringtheprojectincredible
versatility.

Aeroponicsistheprocessofgrowingplantsinanairormistenvironmentwithouttheuseofsoiloran
aggregatemedium(knownasgeoponics).Theword"aeroponic"isderivedfromtheGreekmeaningsof
aero(air)andponos(labor).Aeroponicculturediffersfrombothconventionalhydroponicsandinvitro
(planttissueculture)growing.Unlikehydroponics,whichuseswaterasagrowingmediumandessential
mineralstosustainplantgrowth,aeroponicsisconductedwithoutagrowingmedium.[1]Becausewateris
usedinaeroponicstotransmitnutrients,itissometimesconsideredatypeofhydroponics.
Thebasicprincipleofaeroponicgrowingistogrowplantssuspendedinaclosedorsemiclosed
environmentbysprayingtheplant'sdanglingrootsandlowerstemwithanatomizedorsprayed,nutrient
richwatersolution.[1]Theleavesandcrown,oftencalledthe"canopy",extendabove.Therootsofthe
plantareseparatedbytheplantsupportstructure.Manytimesclosedcellfoamiscompressedaroundthe
lowerstemandinsertedintoanopeningintheaeroponicchamber,whichdecreaseslaborandexpense;for
largerplants,trellisingisusedtosuspendtheweightofvegetationandfruit.
Ideally,theenvironmentiskeptfreefrompestsanddiseasesothattheplantsmaygrowhealthierandmore
quicklythanplantsgrowninamedium.However,sincemostaeroponicenvironmentsarenotperfectly
closedofftotheoutside,pestsanddiseasemaystillcauseathreat.Controlledenvironmentsadvance
plantdevelopment,health,growth,floweringandfruitingforanygivenplantspeciesandcultivars.
Duetothesensitivityofrootsystems,aeroponicsisoftencombinedwithconventionalhydroponics,which
isusedasanemergency"cropsaver"backupnutritionandwatersupplyiftheaeroponicapparatus
fails.
