Narrating in the past
1. In French, several tenses are used to express past actions. You have already learned
the pass compos. The pass compos is used to express actions that started and
ended at a specific time in the past. You are now going to learn the imperfect tense.
2. First, lets look at how the imperfect tense is formed. To get the stem for the
imperfect, you drop the -ons ending from the nous form of the present tense.
You add the imperfect endings to this stem. Study the following.

Describing things in the past
1. As you have already learned, the imperfect is used to describe continuous,
repeated, or habitual actions in the past.
2. You also use the imperfect to describe persons, things, places, situations, and
physical and emotional conditions or states in the past.

Le tlphone dhier
et daujourdhui
Bonjour.
numro. Notre tlphone tait un
tlphone cadran et souvent,
mon petit doigt 2 ratait un numro.
De temps en temps, je tlphonais
ma grand-mre dune cabine
tlphonique publique. Il ny avait
pas encore de tlcarte. On devait

On demande la quantit
dunits quon dsire.

amliore5.
LInternet
offre des possibilits immenses de communication.
Comment donner une adresse e-mail en franais? Voici comment on
doit dire ladresse suivante: veronique.perse@wanadoo.fr Vronique

CONNEXIONS
La technologie
Lordinateur
Its hard to imagine life before the
computer. The computer has
revolutionized many fields, including
travel, medicine, architecture, the
military, banking, and commerce.
Even agriculture and the arts make
extensive use of the new technology.
The changes have been tremendous.
Because the United States has led the
way in computer science, much of the
vocabulary used worldwide is in
English or derived from English. Lets
read about some of these changes in
technology and the prevalence of
English in this domain.

Le jeu du tlphone
Divide into teams by row. Using the imperfect, the last person in each row
whispers to the person in front of him or her one sentence about what he or
she used to do in the past. Each person whispers the sentence to the next
person until the message reaches the front of the row. The first person in each
row says the sentence to the class. The team whose final sentence most closely
resembles the original wins!

Writing Strategy
Expository writing Expository writing explains
and informs. It helps readers to understand a topic.
Before you write, two important questions to ask
about your topic are how to and why. Use
familiar terms in your definitions and descriptions.
Be careful not to omit important facts and steps and
to present the steps in order. These measures will
help you present a clear and concise explanation
that readers will find interesting and informative.
LES TLCOMMUNICATIONS
Un job intressant
You had a job this past summer
with a service organization dealing
with French-speaking countries. You
got the job because you speak
French. Write to Christophe, your
French pen pal, and explain some of
the things you did in the office and
what equipment you used. Since
you know that Christophe has never
worked in an office and is not
familiar with office machines,
be as clear and as logical as you
can in your explanation.
