Bong Hits from the Astral Basement: Volume Two

Where'd the time go? Opening on blasts of smoke and fuzz, 2013 offered a fat stash of stoner rock
stickiness, nowhere better captured than in Heavy Planet's basement. We sift through countless stems and
seeds to share what we believe are the finest sonic buds you haven't heard. Sure, we wax and wince on
Sabbath, Kyuss, Sleep, and Clutch as much as the next blog. But our bread and bud-butter is offering
you, the tirelessly faithful, an avenue through which to find your new favorite band.
The release of Bong Hits from the Astral Basement: Volume I saw sixty-one vastly underappreciated
artists reaching speakers on a scale that transcended language barriers and wet coughs. Since 2008,
Heavy Planet has strived to be your go-to, crafting easy introductions between bands and listeners. With
Volume I, our middlemen received a staggering, humbling response in terms of both submissions and
downloads. As a new year briskly approaches and promising new sounds emerge from breezeways and
back alleys, we're stoked to offer a beefed-up Volume II.
Our repeat offenders are what keep this thing alive. Heavy Planet is proud to be part of a music scene
boasting the heaviest purple-fiber jams and most absolutely loyal fans. These hand-picked nugs embody
just a fraction of our gratitude to those of you who keep coming back and never fail in spreading the
good word. Clear a spot on the couch and strap on some headphones. Here's to you, comrade.

Thank you,
Heavy Planet

Ruben: Gitaar, zang, synth
Michiel: Gitaar
Igor: Bas
Ward: Drum
Biography:
30,000 Monkies brings riff-georrinteerde rock music laced with nonsensical lyrics and sludgy guitars,
occasionally interspersed with a rag noise. The music is inspired by the Melvins, Harvey Milk, or drag,
but also by less heavy work like Flaming Lips and Liars. In 2011 they made their psychedelic firstfruits'
Womb Eater Wife Beater "upon the world. Today, they are a direct suit for the day with the forthcoming
second EP, "Somewhere Over The Painbow". On 24 minutes they throw everything in a pile and noise
rock, sludge and a stray ballad combined.

Band Members:
Bob Brinkman - Bass
Scott Hyatt - Bass
Cory Barnt - drums
Ralph Walters - Artwork
Biography:
After kicking around in various Columbus metal bands over the years bassists Bob Brikman and Scott
Hyatt decided to form Bridesmaid in 2009. With the help of Cory Barnt on Drums the band was
complete. After half a year of rehearsals, they played their first show in November 2009 and haven't
ceased a rigorous schedule since, touring as much as possible and providing support and a place to crash
for as many other touring bands as they can manage.
The defining characteristic of Bridesmaid is the texture of the music, Bridesmaid has spent a great deal of
time combining different speaker and amp configurations to give a hefty dose of midrange to balance out
the low end. Combined with Barnt's attention to detail in the recording and mixing process, as well as
drumming they have come up with their own take on music to bang your head to.

CAVERN

Stephen Schrock - Drums, Vocals
Zach Harkins - Guitar, Vocals
Biography:
CAVERN is a young trio of heavy sludge rockers from the far western hills of Oakland, Md., a place
with more than 100 inches of snowfall per year. The cold and remoteness of the region lent itself to
fostering the musical talents in CAVERN, comprised of brothers Nick and Zach Harkins, on bass and
guitar, respectively, and friend Steven Schrock on drums.
CAVERN emerged in April 2012 from the longstanding friendship of Steve and Zach who have been
playing music with one another since the sixth grade. Members claim that they derive their influences
from everything from Black Sabbath to Rush to Black Flag, and Converge. Characterized by heavy,
progressive riffs and charging rhythms, CAVERN shows theres more going on in the hills of Maryland
than hunting and skiing. Listeners will enjoy satisfying leads, masculine vocals and complex instrumental
interludes of sludge-y, weighty goodness.
We are extremely influenced by art, film, horror, friendship, and nature. Our music is an honest
representation of our life experiences. We love and embrace what we do.

CHRON GOBLIN

Josh Sandulak

Brett Whittingham
Biography:
From the smoke-filled rooms of university to beer-stained stages across western Canada and abroad,
Chron Goblin have been spreading the stoke wherever they go. Filling bars and venues alike since their
2009 inception, the party-hardened four-piece have amassed a loyal fan base with their addictive onstage energy as well as two intoxicating rock concoctions: a self-titled EP in 2010 and 2011s acclaimed
full-length One Million From The Top.
Since then, the band has proved their well-earned notoriety with by landing gigs with some of the biggest
names in heavy music, including Vista Chino (ex-Kyuss), Orange Goblin, Weedeater, Black Pussy, 3
Inches of Blood, Bison B.C., and The Devin Townsend Project. In the spring of 2013, their talents won
them the coveted contest-spot at Desertfest London, making them the first Canadians to grace the stage
of the sought-after stoner-rock gold Camden festival.
This demand stems in no small part from Chron Goblins artful, yet accessible blend of influences
ranging from riff-rock to rockabilly, Sabbath to Stray Cats. With no style-boundaries to bind them, the
group avoids self-imposed stagnancy and embrace evolution.

CORTEZ

Band Members:
Matt Harrington - Vocals
Scott O'Dowd - Guitar
Alasdair Swan - Guitar
Jay Furlo - Bass
Jeremy Hemond - Drums
Biography:
If you're wondering why Massachusetts heavy rockers Cortez would release their first full-length as a
double-album, the answer is simple: Balance.
Balance is at the core of everything Cortez does, whether it's nailing the equal scale measure of pop
catchiness and fuzzed-out heavy rock and roll, or in guitarist Scott O'Dowd's classy lead work and the
sense of rocker soul Matt Harrington and bassist Jay Furlo work into the chorus for a song like Until We
Die. It's always in balance, always smooth but scuffed up just right. The album's 11 tracks hit a nerve in
reminding what it is about this kind of music that makes us use the term classic rock, but the band
never sounds redundant or like they're trying to be someone more than they're trying to be themselves.
Cortez played their first show in July 2006 and released their debut EP in 2007 on Buzzville Records.
Thunder in a Forgotten Town earned the band their first dose of praise both in print and online, and
seemed to hit a nerve with the heavy rock underground. The band's humble sound rung out like riff rock
fans dogwhistling their love to other fans, and Cortez toured regionally to support the EP, and continued
3DPageFlip eBook Maker

to play shows and festivals like the Stoner Hands of Doom fest in Maryland, Maine Stoner Fest and
WBCN's Rock 'n' Rumble.
But time goes on, and goes quickly. Soon it was three years since the venerated outfit put Thunder in a
Forgotten Town to tape at Cambridge's famous New Alliance Audio (Scissorfight, Cracktorch, etc.), and
then four, and now, five. A 2009 demo with new vocalist Matt Harrington showed that Cortez had grown
and developed their songwriting to a level of mastery, and live shows proved it was no fluke. The nowfoursome, fronted by Harrington, was the most potent incarnation of Cortez yet. The only thing missing
was the band's first full-length.
Between then and now, O'Dowd and drummer Jeremy Hemond vented some frustration in other projects,
but there was no question when it was time for Cortez to reemerge, which they did with all the subtlety
befitting the conquistador from whom their moniker comes. Recorded once again at New Alliance
Audio, engineered and mixed by Ethan Dussault, mastered by Nick Zampiello and Rob Gonella at New
Alliance East and boasting artwork by the venerable Alexander von Wieding, Cortez's Cortez is two LP's
worth of album on one CD, and it more than makes up for the five years since their last outing.
Cortez were a different band then. Now, they are wiser, stronger, more cohesive and more confident than
ever before. And that balance they strike? Yeah, it sits pretty well alongside your Sabbath, your Deep
Purple, your Cactus, your Kyuss and your Roadsaw, but it's also totally their own and after all this time,
they're just getting started.

DEFEATING THE PORPOISE

Band Members:
John Glennon - Guitars, Vox
Derren Carter - Drums
Biography:
An Orlando based band with a sound drenched in thick fuzz, loud drums, and clouds of glaucoma
medication, Defeating The Porpoise has set out to showcase their own brand of Stoner and Sludge Metal,
rife with plodding riffs, harsh vocals, dissonant leads, and concussive rhythms.
Guitarist/ Vocalist John Glennon, and Drummer Derren Carter first met at college in late 2011. After
finding a mutual love of metal, booze, and bong rips, the two decided to begin jamming together at
Johns apartment studio (compete with angry noise complaints). When the World didnt end on
December 21st, 2012, the two took it as a sign to start a band, and Defeating The Porpoise was born.
Soon after, Glennon and Carter began getting together frequently to write riffs, discuss lyrical themes,
and throw back some tall boys, crafting their sound with every emptied can. Somewhere between bowls,
the duo somehow managed to record their eponymous debut EP, and with a budget relegated mainly to

chemical ingestion, the record had to be entirely self-produced, with mixing and mastering done by
Derren Carter himself.
Since the release of their EP, Defeating The Porpoise look to continue writing and recording the heavy
music that they love if they can ever manage to pull themselves off the couch that
is.

Biography:
DoctoR DooM is a Rock band, based in Arige (Midi-Pyrnes, France), formed in 2011.

Deep Purple, Coven ), DoctoR DooMs music is firmly rooted in Rock culture, combining
vintage sound and heavy riffs while using song structures more typical of Progessive Rock.

DRONE HUNTER

Band Members:
Rus - drums
Klen - bass
Fitz - guitar
Biography:
Drone Hunter is an istrumental riff-worshiping-hard-rockin-loud three piece band from Varadin, Croatia. The
band has been around since March 2012. Drummer 'Rus' had this idea of a groovy rock band which would
allow all members to express themselves withuot limitations regarding genre, line-up or song structures. They
started to jam as a trio with Klen on bass and Fitz on guitars, without vocals.A few rehearsals deep they
decided to stay that way and have functioned without a singer ever since.
They have had about twenty shows so far all across Croatia and Slovenia and show no signs of stopping
anytime soon since they are on a mission to promote their debut self titled LP released in October 2013 which
offers offers almost 45 minutes of intense, distorted, dirty and catchy riff work along with a powerful groove
and flow.

The idea was to create a heavy, distorted but above all catchy and groovy record that would capture the

essence of what this band is all about - riffing and grooving. Without vocals. This piece is a sonic journey
of the minds and hearts of three guys with a thing for simplicity and minimalism. The band feels that
they have achieved their mission which was to make sure that the stuff you hear on the CD is the same
thing you hear at their shows, without overproducing and
'surgically' polishing the sound. Their live shows are loud and straight to the point, without too much monkey
business.

FEN

Band Members:
Doug Harrison: voice & guitar
Sam Levin: guitar & voice
Jeff Caron: bass
Nando Polesel: drums
Biography:
In January of 1998, in the mountain shadows of Nelson, British Columbia, a creatorship emerged called
Fen. The road has been long for this dark-leaning band, which after more than a decade of obscurity, was
finally ushered into the prog and metal fan's psyche. This occurred in 2010, when Fen signed to
California label Ripple music and released their fourth album Trails Out Of Gloom. The album garnered
impressive reviews from bloggers and print magazines around the world, including mention in the UK's
Classic Rock magazine and a perfect 16/16 score from the US authority on prog: Progressions Magazine.
To follow up this attention, in May of 2011, the management of UK/Israeli prog veterans Blackfield
invited Fen to open for them at Vancouver's Rickshaw Theatre (1000-person capacity).
To date, Fens music has sold in more than fifteen countries, and with the help of dedicated bloggers, two
AAA-radio campaigns, and a music video for the single Miracle, the bands following continues to
expand. In surprising contrast to the dark nature of Fen's music, their songs have been placed on HGTV
(Home and Garden Television) and Animal Planet's, From Underdog to Wonderdog, among others. The
song "Through the Night" will soon be available on the video game RockBand.
Fen has performed at clubs and festivals throughout BC, and in the summer of 2011, took part in the
Forest Symphony at UBC's Pacific Spirit Park, where they played unplugged for a roving audience of
700. Fen's fifth album, Of Losing Interest, was completed in February 2012. It is their second release
under the Ripple Music label, and it brings together a band line up first assembled in 1999.

FORTRESS OF NARZOD

Band Members:
Jim Lewis: Bass/Vocals
Scott Pridham: Drums
Andrew Pickering: Guitar
Biography:
Fortress of Narzod was first conceived when myself (that's Jim Lewis ex Casanovas, Red Shift, Naked
Eye) was talking to Andrew Pickering at a gig when we both discovered we shared a love for what is
loosely termed stoner rock. We decided to jam up some songs in my spare room. We were at a loss as to
who could drum for the band until I ran into an old friend, Scott Pridham (ex Devil Dolls, Ivory Shaft,
Sandpit) at a Hitmen show. I asked Scott on the off chance, would he be interested in playing some more
riff oriented stuff than he'd done in the past. Turned out he was.
We started jamming in late 2009 working up a set of originals and some covers (Shylock by Buffalo and
Last Days Here by Pentagram). The originals deliberately displayed a certain playfulness for a genre
usually concerned with dark and menacing themes. The songs dealt with fantasy themed arcade games
(Golden Axe), collecting science fiction and fantasy books (Let Yourself Roam) and 70s kids TV
(Mighty Isis). Lyrically the band also took a huge amount of influence from classic weird fiction and
fantasy authors (Philip Jose Farmer, Michael Moorcock, Frank Herbert and Gene Wolfe have all been

plundered for content). Musically we've stolen riffs from, I mean been influenced by, the Stooges, Black
Sabbath, the Master's Apprentices, Sleep, Union Carbide Productions, MC5, Electric Wizard and Iron
Claw to name just a few.
We first started playing live (supporting my old friends, the Casanovas) at the Tote Hotel and have
subsequently played at the Lyrebird Lounge, the Brunswick Hotel, YaYas and the Town Hall Hotel.
We've released a three track EP Power in the Hands of Fools which has received strong reviews from
such outlets as theobelisk.com and Vincebus Eruptum magazine. Underground probably sums up where
we're at and we're we'll stay. Still it's gratifying and inspiring to see a band like Uncle Acid and the
Deadbeats actually get international recognition. Perhaps there is hope for those of us on the fringes afterall.

GODHUNTER

Band Members:
Charlie - Vocals
David - Guitars and Vocals
Jake - Guitars
Dick - Bass
Andy- Drums
Biography:
Scratching out a niche amongst the dusty, iron hard landscape of the desert isn't an easy enterprise, but
Godhunter has continually warmed to work since their genesis in late 2009. While experiencing the
growing pains common in being part of a band or music scene, this diverse group of musicians has
learned that hard work, dedication, and belief in the music they write make all the difference. One can
hear this quality in the Godhunter sound. Influenced just as much by Black Flag as Black Sabbath,
Godhunter worships at the altar of the riff and creates a raw wall of sound that refuses to follow
conventional patterns. With the release of "Wolves" in late 2011, Godhunter brought this fury to the
wider world, sharing the stage with national luminaries such as St. Vitus, Crowbar, Red Fang, and The
Sword. The band also embarked on numerous road dates during 2012, receiving accolades for "Wolves"
in a variety of publications around the globe, from Metal Hammer to Hails & Horns magazine. Having
accomplished these milestones, Godhunter is ready to take the next logical step. Further touring and
opening for bands such as Ghost, Clutch, and Kylesa cemented Godhunter as a staple of heavy in the
Southwest region during 2013. With the first proper debut album, "City of Dust", arriving in 2014 via
The Compound, Godhunter will make a mark on the scene above and beyond what has come before.

GORGANTHERRON

Band Members:
Clint Logan
Toby Richardson
Chris Flint
Biography:
In 1968, a top secret military mission launched three chimpanzees into space. The goal was to test a new
vessel designed for deep space exploration. Mookie, Yim-Yim & Steve were to be the first Earth
creatures to travel to the end of the known galaxy and beyond. Few expected the animals to survive, but
the data collected during the voyage would be invaluable for future expeditions. On August 25, 1968
their ship launched. Sold to the media as the launch of a weather satellite, it went unnoticed. For the next
four years the vessel sent flight data and vital signs of the passengers, studied by only a few scientists
with the highest security clearance. On January 19, 1972 the last communication was received. The ship
had reached the edge of the galaxy and the passengers were still alive. Abruptly, all communications
ended. Nevertheless, the scientists used the accumulated data to develop systems that would end up in the
Space Shuttle, but the mission itself was forgotten.
Then in early 2010, radio telescopes picked up an unknown object traveling at remarkable speeds.
Scientists tracked it until it fell to Earth, landing in rural Indiana. The military responded and were
shocked to find wreckage of the ship that had launched in 1968, still blasting an endless loop of Black
Sabbath's Master of Reality and the first two Iron Maiden albums. However, the ship was found to be

empty with no sign of the three chimps. The occurrence was swept under the rug, and scientists were left
scratching their heads.
Months later three men appeared claiming to be the very same chimps from the mission. They told of
traveling to the Andromeda galaxy and being captured by a race of beings far more advanced than
humans...the mighty Gorgantherron. They had been monitoring human progress for centuries and were
appalled at humankind's behavior toward each other and their planet. The Gorgantherron used their
superior technology to evolve the chimps into stunningly handsome men. They spent years listening to
Doom and Black metal. The Gorgantherron considered metal to be one of the few things the miserable
humans had gotten right. The three were educated in guitar, bass, and drums, then hurled back to their
home planet to warn humankind of the dire consequences of continuing their petty, selfish ways.

Biography:
Greater Gods formed in October of 2012 and released their first album at the end of that month on devil's

recorded as they were written live at the Drummer's home studio. The album contained fifteen tracks
with a variety of different sound qualities and no vocals.
The following month Greater Gods upgraded their studio significantly. They then wrote and recorded
their second release which was released December 3rd of 2012 . It was titled after the second track on the
album "Hymn of Ereshkigal." It contained eight tracks with a lot more consistent sound quality than their
first album and contained vocals.
The third Greater gods album "Mantra of Kali" was released on April 20th 2013. It contained eight track
and was significantly faster and heavier than their more doom inspired earlier material.

GROAN

Band Members:
Mazzereth - Vocals
Mike Pilat - Guitar
Jimmy Beedham - Guitar
Leigh Jones - Bass
Zel Kaute - Drums
Biography:
Excelling in a live environment, UK reefer-based riff rockers Groan released their debut album The
Sleeping Wizard in 2010 through Doomanoid Records. Originally a one-man bedroom project, they
were soon booked for live shows across the UK where theyve truly established themselves as one of
those bands you just have to see live fully backing up the talent they've shown again and again on their
self-recorded and self-produced material...
The album itself was released to overwhelming critical praise
"Doom diehards will absolutely love this album's dedication to walloping, great riffs." - Kerrang!

"Awesome, mind-expanding riffs so spaced out they're practically aliens." - Terrorizer

"This is what all 'Stoner Rock' is meant to be... 10/10" - Doommantia
"In so many ways it kicks more ass than most of the albums that have been released by established time
served bands... Groan are keeping the riff alive and well and giving us what Cathedral have failed to do
over the last two albums." - The Sleeping Shaman
In the nine months after the album was released, the band played live all over the country, smoked the
GDP of a small African nation, wrote off a three day old Ferrari California, decorated their rehearsal
room with gifts from hookers and split up and re-formed in a day that must have been a full moon.
Their follow up, a split EP with Finnish band Vinnum Sabatum, was also hyped to the moon by critics
upon its release in 2011
"Groan take 70s rock and give it a modern kick in the nuts." - The Sleeping Shaman
"[Groan] are also one of the very best at delivering killer tunes that never leave your memory and these
2 tracks are pure golden nuggets of heavy, groove-based doom-rock... 9/10" - Doommantia
"I'm very happy that Groan are from the UK, and must query as to why I have yet to see them at
Bloodstock." - The Number of the Blog
"From the sounds of it, the [Groan] boys had a little too much fun the day before recording [the split]" The Soda Shop
Groans second album, The Divine Right of Kings was released in October 2012 through Dutch label
Soulseller Records and like their previous two releases, was recorded, produced and mixed by the band
themselves. Egos once again inflated by critics, the band supported the release with a short UK tour that
they remember only through haze-tinted spectacles.
"There's a sense of groove and swagger to every one of the 10 tracks on offer: a real party album." Terrorizer
"Im telling you, this album is the shit. The Divine Right of Kings is a lot like some of the best weed" The Soda Shop
"Reminiscent of Cathedral at their most unabashedly rocking... Groan can't help but be a good time...
infectious and fist-pumpingly dopey... [The Divine Right of Kings is] an easy record to be excited about
and I cant think of a reason not to be. Recommended." - The Obelisk
After an incredible live show at Londons Desertfest 2013 (They brought the house down early with
their unabashed heavy metal shuffle They were a top notch stage act The Obelisk), the band returns
with an all new lineup: founding members Mazzereth (vocals) and Leigh Jones (bass) are now joined by
Mike Pilat (ex-Ocean Collective) and James Beedham on guitar with Zel Kaute (ex-Pettybone, Vodun)
smashing the skins. The band self-produced, recorded and mixed a new five track EP named Ride the
Snake with former drummer and guitarist Chris West that will be released on December 10th through
Superhot Records, with a UK tour to follow that week, too.

THE HEAVY COMPANY

Band Members:
Ian Gerber - Guitars
Jeff Kaleth - Drums
Biography:
They say that anything worth doing is worth doing right. If you want it done right then you have to do it
yourself and that takes time. With that being said, The Heavy Co. has wrapped up production on their
first full length record, Midwest Electric. It's story is close to epic if you consider that we are talking
about a record that is a result of 4 hazy years of tears, writing, woodshedding, playing live, recording and
producing the whole damn production in-house to yield 37 or so smoke and incense filled minutes of
psychedelic guitar rock haze that solidly stretches the limits of the genre that has been come to be
affectionately (or not so affectionately, depending on who you talk to) known as stoner rock.
Let's get a few things straight. This record was never meant to be perfect. The tempos swell and recede,
the vocals aren't necessarily in key all of the time, and you're going to hear some things buzz, but I can
assure you...it sounds exactly how it was supposed to. Originally Midwest Electric was intended to be
recorded on an 8 track tape machine, but Murphy's Law prevails and the damn thing broke right in time
for tracking. THC went ahead and took advantage of their digital recording capabilities to the fullest, but
underneath the layers of extra tracks is the sound of three guys getting down in a room and jamming like
they only got one take at the thing. The other thing is while there is no doubt, like their other stoner
peers, that a huge part of THC's sound is a throwback to the classic rock of the late 60's and early 70's,
3DPageFlip eBook Maker

it's a modern rock sound. The idea that their music is modern sets THC apart from most stoner rock
bands. It's cool if a band relies on the amplifier theatrics of the 70's (who doesn't love a loud riff through
a wall of amps), but as the guys say, don't stop now, there's no time to cry. Jimi Hendrix was looking
for a new kind of blues and The Heavy Co. are giving it their best shot.
Midwest Electric isn't a stereotypical stoner rock record. It could have just as easily have been called
Midwest Eclectic. First off, there is a country twinge to the whole thing, especially in the subtle twangy
drawl that creeps into the vocal delivery. Second, no two songs on the record really sound alike. Midwest
Electric moves from a driving hard rock number like The Humboldt County Waltz to the lonesome guitar
wail and lament of Neil Young to the spacey drone of Sailing Towards The Setting Sun and the bluesy
fuzzed out doom of One Big Drag . The album's seven songs are unique to themselves but never out of
place with each other. THC has meticulously crafted a record that embodies the feelings of isolation,
paranoia, and general drudgery of existing in between the rows of corn and how it contrasts with the
hopes and dreams that come from the transcendental experiences of those bored different souls that
reside there inevitably get around to having. That or THC just wanted to write some songs so they could
groove out and play some guitar solos. Whatever works for you. Please tune in...

HEAVY RELIC

Band Members:
Nick Toone
Biography:
Heavy Relic is the new side project of UK musician Nick Toone, who has been
steadily releasing independent psychedelic music since 2000 and when hes not
making music he also dabbles in psychedelic lightshows as well.
Heavy Relic is the outlet for all the heavy, lengthy, instrumental psych-jams that
simply dont have a home in his more synth-driven psychedelic albums; think of
music along the lines of stoner bands such as Earthless, Samsara Blues Experiment,
or even the sprawling acid jam workouts that used to be a feature of late-80s
Bevis Frond or Tangle Edge. That's where you'll find the Heavy Relic sound.
The first album is available as both a bandcamp download, and because physical
product is still so much nicer, there are a limited number of hand-finished vinyl
cds available as well.
Atomic Rhythm submitted for the Heavy Planet compilation is a teaser from the as
yet untitled second album. Work is already well underway, so expect more downtuned
guitars, big drums and wacky noises in 2014!

Thing Within The Thing demanded an end to the self-imposed isolation. Reviews of the latter album have
been largely positive, emphasising Hirams demanding, awkward style, requiring patience and commitment
from the listener.
While the future is uncertain, Hiram aspire to be gigging, in the UK and Europe, well in to their old age

HUNGRY BRAINS

Band Members:
Paul Daly
Callum Armstrong
Orestis Papisback
Biography:
Hungry Brains formed in sunny Manchester, England over a shared love of the loud, the melodic and the
progressive. One thing came to mind - making heavy music with hooks that hit you right out of the gate.
Two well received sister EPs ("Centre Of The Omniverse" and "The Mule"), probably way too much
beer and about year later those ideals haven't changed. 2014 will bring more shows and riffs than you can
physically handle.
We're not afraid to fuse a little progressive complexity with the brute force of stoner rock but with vocals
that could take down a bear. One or more of us also resembles a bear. But we are not Hungry Bears, we
are Hungry Brains.

MOUNTAIN WITCH

Band Members:
Rene Roggmann - Drums, Vocals
Rene Sitte - Guitar, Vocals
Tobert Knopp - Bass
Biography:
Initially formed as an instrumental project by guitarist Rene Sitte and drummer Rene Roggmann, after
entering the studio in the summer of 2009 the Hamburg duo emerged with a recording of what would
later become Mountain Witch's debut album Scythe & Dead Horse. A sizeable slab of heavy desert rock
and extended stoner jams, the ultra limited edition vinyl release that followed soon after sold out
instantly, and three years on, this year's rerelease on the German cassette only label Witches On Fire
quickly followed suit.
Since then Mountain Witch has not only recruited a third member in bass player Tobert Knopp, they
have returned with a more focused and ambitious sound on their follow up album Cold River. Their first
release on This Charming Man Records the Muenster based label responsible for Die Nerven, The
Moth, Messer and more while that loose and low slung spirit of Scythe still remains, it's strengthened
by an unmistakable 70s psych rock majesty. With vintage tones and killer riffs reminiscent of early
Sabbath, their new direction also takes in the boogie of Blue Cheer, ballsy strut of Deep Purple and
ambition of Pink Floyd. A sound that doesn't shy away from its hard rock roots and at the same time
3DPageFlip eBook Maker

doesn't stop long enough to rest on them.

A more structured record than anything they've ever laid down before, Cold River's newest and most
noticeable characteristic can be heard in the addition of Rene Roggman's vocals and darkened lyrics.
Lysergic tales spun out over haunting grooves that never stray far from the arcane acid jams that inspired
them originally, and can be heard here echoing across 'Ancient Light' and the curiously titled 'Shrubbery
The Warlock'. There's also a distinct feeling that while the Mountain Witch of old were content to plug in
and rock out, the epic guitar assaults and rhythm and doom sections of 'Sleepers Chant' and 'The Covey'
give this latest incarnation a newfound purpose. One that could give the likes of Dead Meadow, Uncle
Acid and former label mates Kadavar a serious run for their money.
Trading in the cosmos for the kingdom with Cold River Mountain Witch are out for the crown and it's
only a matter of time before they take the empire.

Biography:
In 2011, 4 people from different parts of the US came together in Virginia to create what would become
Pillbuster. Influenced by the deep rooted, swampy sounds of southern metal, east coast hardcore, punk,
and straight up rock, this band proves that genres cannot bind.
Each band member brings a different element of influence to the table, helping to create a simple yet
complex sound reminiscent of times when music wasn't over produced and cookie cut for the masses.
Pillbuster's sound is hard, in your face and raw...and that's how they like it.
Every song has crushing grooves, pounding rhythms with pain ridden vocals and vicious
arrangements...inviting the listener to experience the influences and story of the band.
Pillbuster hides from all of the trends, and just plays the music that they want to play...staying true to
who they are and what they do is evident in every riff, fill, and growl.

released in October 2011 on there own label Drug Rug Records. They spent 2012 playing numerous gigs
around New England including that years Stoner Hands Of Doom festival in CT. With Anthony
Cimino(Mojo Studios) and Clay Neely(Black Coffee Sound), they started work in early 2013 on their
newest album "Blooze" which they released in September 2013.
With Blooze, Skrogg brings more of their southern/classic/blues rock influences while still keeping it
heavy and dirty.

Biography:
THE LEGEND OF SNAIL
Snail formed in 1992 consisting of singer Mark Johnson (The Crucified, PASTE, Blessing the Hogs),
bassist Matt Lynch and drummer Marty Dodson. The eponymous first album (Big Deal Records), was
well received by critics and garnered much praise in the press, as well as gaining a loyal following from
peers like long time supporters Fu Manchu and Nebula.
After the follow-up release of the DIY, 4-track cassette-recorded EP All Channels Are Open, Snail
sadly succumbed to the sex, drugs, an Rock n Roll lifestyle and eroded to the point of breaking up.
REIGN OF BLOOD
Snail reunited in 2008 after 15 years of slumber, added long-time friend and guitarist Eric Clausen, and
unleashed Blood (Meteor City)what many said was one of the Top Ten stoner/doom records of
2009. Not merely riff-rock, Blood combined fuzzy guitars and a pummeling rhythm section with
layered, soaring melodies rarely heard in the genre. In a time of industry turmoil, the record went from
blood-red to in the black. The record even attracted the attention of underground music legend Henry
Rollins, getting multiple plays on his Fanatics radio show on influential
Los Angeles station KCRW.
THE END IS THE BEGINNING
Snails new album, Terminus, showcases all fresh material, infused with the enthusiasm of newly
minted collaboration. Influences that were not evident in past works come to the fore, steeped in oldschool metal and psychedelia. The subject matter is noticeably more mature, as the entire record delves
into the themes of mortality and its implications in our modern world. From crushing doom to headbobbing Camaro rock and hypnotic psych, Terminus is Snails most varied work to date; but most
importantly, IT ROCKS.

SONS OF HUNS

Band Members:
Shoki Tanabe: bass/vox
Pete Hughes: guitar/vox
Ryan Northrop: drums
Aaron Powell: touring bassist
Biography:
In a city like Portland, Oregon, where there are quite literally hundreds of people playing heavy music
and playing it well, at that it takes a bold, tightly-honed punch to the crowd's ears in order to stand out.
Formed in the winter of 2009 and armed with a full stack of Orange cabs, a lifetime of experience and
enoughclassical training to out-riff any band that dares stand in their SG-wielding path, Sons of Huns
have consistently blown crowds away. Peter Hughes (guitar), Shoki Tanabe (bass) and Ryan Northrop
(drums) have headlined shows in anywhere from tiny bars to the main stages of Portland's biggest music
festivals, and had the honor of opening for the likes of Red Fang, Andrew W.K., Danava and even the
world's most metal comedian, Brian Posehn. Prior to this year's huge milestone of being signed to
modern stoner rock's premier independent record label, EasyRider Records, Sons of Huns released both
an acclaimed self-titled EP in 2011 and a seven-inch single for their lumbering, thunderously catchy song
about astral projection, Leaving Your Body, with a massively successful music video to match,
depicting the three members as hooded figures performing a ritual in the dead of night. Throughout their
reign in the Pacific Northwest music scene, they have become widely known for their ability to remain
musically serious, nailing every song with precision while also turning every live show into a sci-fi,
psychedelic-rock party and livening the spirit of every crowd with their jokes and unforgiving volume.

Though Sons of Huns have caught the attention of underground-heavy-music lovers both here in the US
and overseas without a full-length record out, the band will release their first LP, Banishment Ritual, on
November 29th and hit the road. Though the band is sad to announce the departure of Shoki Tanabe, who
is blasting off to pursue a lifelong dream of teaching English in Japan, they are excited to have managed
to nab Aaron Powell from his usual throne at the low end of Spokane, Washington's heavy-psych group
Belt of Vapor, as a touring bassist. Ready your senses and join Sons of Huns as they forge their way
through this unpredictable genre, traversing unexplored riffs and stacking them atop oneanother to
hypnotize you and give all the ladies the fever. Wherever you are, they will find you.

Biography:
During the late summer of 2013, Norwegian multi-instrumentalist HS recorded four tracks in the attic of
Elvetun studio in Rlingen, outside of Oslo city. These songs were to become the Red Forest EP which was
released online in late July 2013.
After a couple of weeks, the EP was picked up by Greek underground label From The Void. The online label
printed the release and sell it though their web shop.
As a brand new band, Tempelheks has never performed live. But HS has gathered a group of live members to
help play live and record a full-length album.

Red Forest EP is a release which lays the ground works for Tempelheks' doomy and dark sound. With
thundering guitars in low tuning and a bluesy bass with lots of drive, the EP packs a punch that will shake the
foundations of any stoner doom-head. The occult style, low-pitch vocals gives the tracks an eerie atmosphere
and lyrics of black lotus dreams and sacrificial ceremonies are dominant. As these elements characterize the
release, on some occasions, the guitars play riffs in ethnic inspired scales. Like the intro to "The Cult" or the
entire last track, "Red Forest". The latter, a doom approach to the ancient mystic music of the far east.

THE DEVIL RIDES OUT

Band Members:

Nathan Sproule - drums
Biography:
The Devil Rides Out are a blues-drenched, doom-laden heavy rock outfit from west of the desert in
Perth, Western Australia.

Formed in 2006, the band won the 2009 WAMi Award for 'Best Hard Rock / Metal Artist' and
have been nominated in the same category two times since.
They have played Devil's Kitchen Festival in Melbourne, Doomsday Festival in Sydney and
supported the likes of Clutch (USA), Monster Magnet (USA), Mondo Generator (USA), Fu
Manchu (USA), Black Cobra (USA), Cough (USA), Dead Meadow (USA), Pink Mountaintops
(Can), Winnebago Deal (UK), Shihad (NZ), Truckfighters (Swe) and Cosmic Psychos (Aus).
Their new EP Ugly Creatures was written in the midst of a death in the family, as well as the disintergration of a relationship, and the resulting songs are emotionally charged and stygian black in tone cathartic confessionals of pain directed squarely into the void.
Sort-of title track Ugly Creature charts the surreal confusion and grief in the wake of the suicide
of frontman Joey K's father; their metal opus Empty Sky explores the sense of futility which
followed said tragedy; Burn Again is a stripped-down re-working of their earlier track 'Watch it
Burn' which reveals dark new subterranean layers to the song; and The Righteous Walk is an
organ-drenched blues-dirge that explores the feelings of failure, isolation and yearning in the
aftermath of a relationship breakdown.
The EP closes with a cover of Abbe May's Blood River which does little to alleviate the crushing
weight, reinterpreting the piano based tale of obsession into an apocalyptic doom epic.
If it all sounds a bit heavy, well, it is. But there is also an enormous strength in the vunerability
and resolve of the lyrics that leaves you empowered rather than embittered by EP's end.
Ugly Creatures was recorded by Alan Smith, who previously worked with the band on Volume III and
The Heart and the Crown, as well as with other prominent Perth heavy acts such as Extortion, Jed
Whitey and Eleventh He Reaches London. He captures perfectly the raw intensity of this release which is
undoubtedly The Devil's heaviest and most accomplished yet.

THE GENTLEMEN BASTARDS

Bvar Bvarsson
Biography:
Alabama has a reputation for being a few years behind the rest of the country. But, that's just fine with
The Gentlemen Bastards. This dashing four piece from Huntsville are convinced that rock is headed in
the wrong direction and they aim to set it right. Take a listen to their debut album and you'll hear ten
powerful tracks full of old-school riffs and the swing and swagger that is missing from
today's rock radio.
Canadian drummer Dave Stanley moved South for work and met guitarist Bill Barry when Stanley's band
opened for Barry's alt-rock workhorse, Saturn5. Within a few months, Dave was a full-time member of
S5 and together, they recorded two albums and logged countless hours onstage across the Southeast.
Following the demise of Saturn5, Bill and Dave continued down a heavier path, eventually meeting an
engineering student and aspiring lead singer named Will Quinn. Will's quiet confidence and unparalleled

vocal chops set him apart from other prospects. But, could he write? Any doubt was erased as he quickly
composed the lyrics and melody to a Barry/Stanley jam that would become "If Only" on the Bastards'
debut album.
The final piece of paydirt was Bdvar Bdvarsson - a jazz trained, lefty bass player from Reykyavik,
Iceland who had just moved to Alabama with his American wife. Bdvar's intricate playing style was the
perfect counterpart to the Bastards' busy beats and Sabbathy riffs. Upon hearing an emailed mp3 of
Bdvar's audition jam with Bill and Dave, Will replied with an excited text - "Oh fuck yeah!" One listen
to their self-titled debut and you'll be saying the same thing about The Gentlemen Bastards.

THE GINGERDEAD MEN

Band Members:
Jason Craig: drums.
Jason Luchka: bass. vocals. moog.
Keith Luchka: guitar. vocals.
Kyle Childers: guitar. vocals.
Nate Rader: frontman.
Biography:
There was a time when there were rock bands and there were pop bands. Things were simple. People didn't get
too worked up about what micro-genre a rock band belonged to or what type of songs a band could or could
not play. The Gingerdead Men (tGDM) are a rock band; they like to keep things simple and do whatever they
want. Their riffs, hooks, and massive amplification are all intended to entertain you or get sweaty trying.
The band first came together behind a drum machine in a Northeastern Ohio garage in 1998, founded by
brothers Jason and Keith Luchka along with Kyle Childers. They finally cut their teeth with a live drummer in
2002, when Shaun Yanovich jumped on board to help record the Re-Entry EP. This quartet returned for 2005's

2007, they decided to become a fully functional live band and finally justify the number of amps and guitars
they had acquired in the preceding 9 years. Shaun made the move to full-time frontman, while Jason Craig was
recruited to take over on drums. This line-up endured through the summer of 2012, when Shaun bid adieu to
focus on his own projects. In that four years, the Gingerdead Men recorded their first studio LP (The Forest
and the Trees), got a little bit of press, and were lucky enough to share stages with bands like Karma to Burn,
Lo-Pan, Jucifer, Rue, and a bevy of other amazing locals. They rocked stages big and small (mostly small), in
towns near and far (mostly near), and sweated a lot. Most importantly, they had fun.
The fall of 2012 saw the Gingerdead Men record their third studio EP, Paper Leviathan, with Jon Reider of
New Castle PA's finest, Coinmonster, handling all lead vocals. It was kind of like that time Mike Patton did a

adventure. The EP has had global reach with downloads throughout Europe and the far east. It can be
downloaded as a Pay-What-You-Want album from thegingerdeadmen.bandcamp.com.
In June 2013, tGDM played their first show with Nate Rader at the helm. Immediately after that fiery, 30
minutes without a net-set, he became the band's new frontman, paving the way for Mark IV of the Gingerdead
Men. Since then, the band has been hustling in their jam spot, pursuing new sounds and new material. Besides

THE GREAT KHAN

Band Members:
Greg Buzzer
Biography:

The sound has a southern feel to it, but the origin is the Middle East. Greg Buzzer hails from
Tel Aviv, Israel and has been the driving force behind Buzzer since 2004, but this time
ventures out on his own, delivering a classic set of stoner rock goodness 7 wonderfully
rendered gems that are chock full of monster riffs and blazing solos topped off with Gregs
macho, raspy vocals. This album is aptly named for the great Kha Khan as it resembles an
armed campaign that rolls across the land in a thundering, unending roar of sound and
vibration, power and portent, destroying all before it, leaving nothing in its wake save
quivering masses of demolished victims. There is nothing in history quite like The Great Khan,
which in this case is a wonderful thing.
As with all gifted artists and musicians, Greg displays an adept ability for composition,
creating songs that upon first listen are hard rock in nature, southern in flavor, but closer
inspection reveals songs that are balanced perfectly within the overall melody, allowing hooks
and riffs to develop and deliver, and creating room for all instrumental participants to showcase
and shape each song with their own exceptional sound.

THE REPTILIANS

Band Members:
Joey Labato Guitar

Biography:
It's an odd description of the bands genre, and one that is added to quite regularly by its members.
Whatever adjectives they might use to describe themselves, Idaho based band The Reptilians have forged
their name into the annals of progressive death metal. Often compared to bands such as Mastodon,
Opeth, Isis, and other modern metal heavyweights, the band has received acclaim from across the globe
for both its recorded work and live performance.
The Reptilians was formed in 2003 by frontman/guitarist Viktor Wilt and drummer Steve McMichael.
The two had performed together since 1997 in a band they formed in high school, Dr. Seuss is Dead.
Originally intended to be a side project, as the number of compositions under The Reptilians name began
to rapidly increase in the early 2000s the two eventually shifted toward making the new band their
primary focus.

two multifaceted musicians have played in multitudes of bands over many years and toured the nation
from Seattle to NYC. Gero von Dehn has most recently led the rock n' roll outfit, Shovel Duck (also
with D'Cagna) sang for groove-heavy metallers, Von Dane and fronted Fear Itself before that. D'Cagna
can also be heard playing bass for the buzzworthy occult rock act, Brimstone Coven. Prior to that
D'Cagna showed off his vocal chops in the true metal band Dofka and ripped the 6-string for the ultra
groovy Wilderkin.
These two have combined forces once again to create ZOM, a monstrous force of heavy rock n' roll full
of stinky, stoner grooves and grab-you-by-the-throat hooks. ZOM goes straight to the gut and doesn't

stop its relentless attack until the album ends. The debut self titled album was recorded and mixed at
D'Cagna's Sacred Sound Studio in Martin's Ferry, Ohio. Anxiously awaited, the debut release from ZOM
is sure to meet, if not exceed its high expectations.
