ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,

Index

The dust has settled on another busy tourist season in the

area.
Despite doubts, right up until the last minute, from some of
us, the Snapper Point redevelopment was completed in time
for the Tour Down Under. Congratulations to all involved
from council - designers, workers and contractors. It took
quite a few days of dawn to dust labour at the end but they
did it!
Now we have our public toilet (at last!), childrens
playground and not one but two gazebos with seating and a
barbeque area. We even have a watered lawn area, drinking
fountain and doggy dish.
The only disappointment is the loss of the metal snapper an
artist had made years ago, which had adorned the old
pergola. The coral-like decorations on the pergolas are a nice
touch with the reef adjacent.
Congratulations must go to the ABBTA (Aldinga Bay
Business & Tourism Association) for another well run Tour
Down Under festival this year at the same venue.
The Australia Day breakfast was another outstanding
success. Since ABRA started it in 2006, we have been
regularly giving out approximately 500 hot breakfasts. This
year we set a new record with 630 given out, although
unfortunately, some of the latecomers had to be satisfied
with bacon & cereals as everything else had run out.
Queue delays were also disappointing this year due to the
unexpected numbers combined with an increase in wind
affecting the barbeques. Next year an extra barbeque and
wind breaks will be employed.
The issue is 40 pages again this month although we are
running short of advertising revenue and it may have to be
reduced next month, meaning less room for your articles and
stories.

AUSTRALIA DAY BREAKFAST HIGHLIGHT

Once again the School for Dogs Aldinga Bay enjoyed
showing off to the spectators at the Australia Day Breakfast at Symonds Reserve.
A short display of the end result of training your dog with
us and most of all the Agility display was very popular.
Children enjoyed inter-acting with the dogs and petting
them after the display.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental

Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils
state wide from sending these materials to landfill.
As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will
also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no
longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.
The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource
Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the
Council dump off South Road N of the bridge).
There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste
to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the
Ewaste section.
You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip
depositing the card they issue you with. This card will
take you off their computer.
This can be done any day of the week.

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact

Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace
incandescent globes) contain mercury.
If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this
can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous
results.
They should be disposed of properly through recycling.
Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points
are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga
Environment Centre.

PAINTING THE CROWN

Although it started off fairly damp the weather cleared
about 10am and we quickly got underway.
The Willunga Hill Art Group has always been involved in
painting of the Crown every year and I as coordinator
would like to thank all the Willunga Hill Art Members
who took the time to come and help - Hanneke, Mel,
Lynn, Brigeen, Lucy and Cathy.
We would also like to thank Craig James and his crew
from Onkaparinga Council for their time and also for
supplying paint and brushes!
So when the race is underway and the helicopters fly
overhead panning with cameras and a glimpse of the
crown is picked up on the screen.........it will be a proud
moment for all of us to think even in a small way we have
helped make this TDU another memorable one.

Seeking volunteers
for Secchi Disk monitoring.
Clear water in our Gulf is vital for swimming safely and
marine-life especially seagrass, which underpins our
fisheries and marine ecosystems.
In 2012, the Friends of Gulf St Vincent initiated a project
to help the community monitor the clarity our Gulfs
coastal waters, using secchi disks. These disks are simply
lowered into the ocean until they are no longer visible.
This distance is known as the secchi depth and is an
indication of the waters turbidity.

The Friends of Gulf St Vincent have received funding

from the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges Natural
Resources Management Board to purchase more Secchi
Disks and increase the number of sampling sites. This
will help to generate a more complete picture of turbidity
around the gulf and detect changes in water quality over
time.
Ideally, we are looking
for volunteers who can
take samples on a
regular basis, and they
will need to be able to
take samples on a
secure structure over
relatively deep water,
such as a jetty or boat.
So far, volunteers have
recorded secchi depth
measurements as low
as 60cm at Henley
Beach, which is
startling as secchi depth
readings of under 1.2m are generally
considered unsuitable for swimming, to over 7m at the
clearer waters of Port Noarlunga.
If this sounds like something you, your community group
or local school would be interested in, please visit:

On January 20th 1915, the Opening of the Railway

to Willunga was carried out by the then Governor of
S.A. Sir Henry Galway.
This was celebrated in Willunga on January 20th this
year by a group of National Trust and other
interested towns folk, some in vintage dress who
walked from the Courthouse to the ringing of bells
and whistles, which sounded like the old steam
locomotive that would have pulled the first train.
The first train carried the Vice Regal couple and
500 school children.
To add to the atmosphere the Anglican and Roman
Catholic Churches rang their bells and members of
the McDonald family drove their vintage cars built
between 1913 & 1915 up and down the High Street,
all meeting up at the Railway Precinct for a picnic
lunch.

the long commute into the city for work or school.

History Month in May.
Further events will be advertised in the local press.

Katrina with Sean

The difference between a hopeless woe (too many
troubles) and go (going on with a normal life) was an
unexpected encounter through an unexpected source.
Sean had some typical consequences to his parents
separating. From the age of 12 (when the family split) he
went downhill fast and by age 16 was seriously addicted
as a heavy drug user. No surprise that he and the judicial
system didnt quite see eye to eye over his choice of life
style to support his habits.
Living with his mum and older brother, he didnt see his
father for 10 years and definitely didnt want to. But after
Seans 27-year-old mate died and he saw no way out, it
was his father who amazingly bailed him out of trouble
and took him to live with him. Sean couldnt get over
someone trusting him and giving him a go.
But just because his father was now a preacher was no
reason to go to church thats the last place Sean wanted
to go. Thats where they brain-wash you and get your
money.
Yet partly from curiosity he went along to hear his dad
preach - and had an encounter with One he didnt know
even existed. Sean suddenly realised that this God knew
everything about him, and on 15th January 2005 he made
a genuine commitment of his life to follow Christ. He
declares that after a following Planet Shakers' meeting he
totally lost the need for drugs, cigarettes or gambling!
Sean went on to help out in the churchs youth group and
met and married a lovely girl, Katrina. Now healed of all
addiction and serious hurts, he readily agrees he got the
sort of brain washing a lot of us could do with.

so that we can extricate victims from vehicles that have
been involved in an accident.
All of our Rescue C.F.S volunteers are extensively

Aldinga Beach C.F.S responds to Motor vehicle accidents
in the Aldinga area and also into our surrounding areas.
Accidents can range from a minor accident where all is
required is to ensure fuel/oil leaks are cleaned up to major
accidents where the use of stabilisation is required and the
use of the spreaders and cutters are required to enable
victims to be removed from the vehicle.
Aldinga Beach Rescue also has on board Medical oxygen

News from the Aldinga Bay Bowling Club.

Real proof the face of Lawn Bowls is changing, and that
the sport is indeed a game for all ages, was shown in the
weekly Pennant Competition recently at Aldinga Bay
Bowling Club.
One of the Clubs most senior members, Doug Johnsson
and Connor a very young member of McLaren Vale
Bowling club pitted their respective skills against one
another in the Division six weekly Pennant Competition
at Aldinga.

Doug, now approaching his 90th year, has been bowling

for many years, and says, I get a great deal of enjoyment from the sport, and especially including bowling at
NightOwls with my grandsons."
Bowling keeps Doug active both physically and mentally, and he enjoys the camaraderie of fellow bowlers as
well.
Connor, on the other hand has been bowling for just a
short time, and along with his close friend Dylan is already showing some very real potential on the green.
Connor who also plays other sports, says he really enjoys
bowling in Pennant competition because its something
he can do every Saturday with his Dad, and he also likes
the challenges bowling brings.
Once regarded as a sport for older people, lawn bowls is
now attracting many younger players national and international championships are regularly won by younger
adults.
Young people and the not so young are encouraged to
come down to Aldinga Bay Bowling Club any Tuesday,
Thursday or Saturday to try bowls whilst the warmer
weather is still with us - taking advantage of the complimentary coaching and loan bowls offered to interested
new bowlers.
President of Aldinga Bay Bowling Club John Clissitt can
be contacted on 0417 820 596 for more information.

What is Resveratrol and why its daily

consumption is important?
Compliments of Willunga Veterinary Services

Is your pet protected against Heartworm?

In recent times, more and more pets are being diagnosed with
Heartworm infection. This is not because Heartworm has recently
escalated in our area - it is because more pets are being tested for
Heartworm infection and newer tests are more sensitive!
Heartworm is well proven to exist in South Australia - there have
been over half a dozen positive cases in the last 6 months alone.
Dont let your dog become infected by Heartworm.
Mosquitoes transmit the Heartworm parasite from an infected pet
to another cat or dog - and mosquitoes can migrate over several
kilometers. Plenty of distance to find many dogs or cats! We
have an abundance of mosquitoes in our area, lots of cats and
dogs, and also foxes (which have been shown to carry
Heartworm as well). Click here to see the Heartworm life cycle.
Heartworm disease can cause congestive heart disease - (the adult
Heartworm lives in the large veins and arteries around the heart).
Symptoms can include tiredness and lethargy, coughing,
laboured breathing, and in some cases death.

We strongly recommend preventing Heartworm infection

through a simple once-a-year injection. The cost for 12-weekold puppies (starting age for Proheart injections) is $25. The
cost for older dogs is dependent on body weight.
Applying Advocate monthly can prevent heartworm infection
in cats. We are currently running a promotion - Get one
month for FREE when purchasing a 6-month box of
Advocate (7 months worth of Advocate for the price of 6).

Every day our bodies accumulate toxins, every day..no

matter how hard we try to maintain our essential level
consumptions, our body is not an everlasting engine
and especially as we grow older we need vitamin
support. Free radicals that come from toxins kill our
cells and damage our DNA which means cells dont grow
and the chances of becoming ill increase and our bodies
ability to fight illness diminishes. Stresses, tiredness,
pollution, lack of sleep are companion to our busy lives
So, is there a solution?
Yes there is.
Resveratrol is the solution but where do we get it?
Red wine contains grape seed extract. Grape is such a
tasty and sweet antioxidant especially if we add to our
fruit plates Cherry, Blueberry, Pomegranate and Aloe we
believe that consumption of these will keep us healthier.
However there is scientific evidence that we would need
to drink 80 glasses of red wine to obtain the necessary
level of antioxidants in our body within a day. Sounds
impossible and not exactly healthy? Absolutely, who
would be able to drink this amount of wine a day and be
able to function?
But what if all these ingredients, these toxins fighters
are combined into one safe and delicious sealed small
pack?
Its called Reserve! Lets have a look at what it does:
1.
Antioxidants resist oxidative stress and premature
aging
2. Anthocyanins support healthy cardiovascular function
3
3. Essential fatty acids assist in digestive tract function 4.
4. Reinforces a healthy immune system 5.
5. Helps maintain a healthy metabolism
6. Helps boost energy
7. Supports healthy joint function
8. Positive cap-e test results indicate that RESERVE
penetrates and protects live cells from oxidative
damage*
9. Independent Lab tests confirm each packet of Reserve
contains over 185 mg of RESVERATROL.
Personally I consume Reserve daily and I love the results.
Youth Enhancing Technology never tasted so good!

The Get Together Club

A new club has started in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.
It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was a
great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.
A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community Grant
from the City of Onkaparinga and is also supported by
Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and Disability
SA. New members are always welcome.
The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of each
month, at the Aldinga Life Care Hall, Pridham Blvd,
Aldinga Beach from 6.30 8.30pm.

Vinnies Freds Van service, which offers a free,

warm, nutritious meal to men, women and children who are
doing it tough in our community, will commence serving
people in the Aldinga region from 20th March 2015.
Freds Van will operate one service a week from the
Aldinga Community Centre, which has agreed to allow
Freds Van to operate from their premises. Freds Van
estimates that they will serve approximately 30-40 people
each week - half of which will be young children. This will
be the first service in the southern region which provides
meals to people experiencing disadvantage.
Aldinga was determined as the newest location for
Freds Van after aid agencies in the region highlighted the
need to the St Vincent de Paul Society (SA). The
Onkaparinga Council has also been working closely with
the Society for some time to provide the Freds Van style
service within its council area.
Freds Van is seeking volunteers from the local area
to help with their new Aldinga service. Volunteers carry
out a range of duties including food preparation and food
service. Freds Van is also keen to discuss with local
businesses who are interested in donating goods or food on
a regular or ad-hoc basis.
St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) State President,
Brian Spencer said, Vinnies is really concerned about the
impact of current cost of living pressures. There is no
question that our economic climate is undermining the
ability of many South Australians to fully look after
themselves in their local communities. This new Freds
Van service will go a long way to ensuring we are able to
better assist men, women and children who are doing it
tough in the Aldinga area.
Freds Van supports some of the most vulnerable
people in our community who experience a range of issues
such as homelessness, social isolation and unemployment.
People forced to live rough can come to Freds Van for a
hot, nutritious meal, blankets, donated books, social
connection and referrals to other community service and
Government agencies. The service provides nutritious
meals and take home hampers with the support of its 520
volunteers.
Each year Freds Van helps in excess of 25,000 South
Australians almost half of which are children.
Brian Spencer continues whilst we have volunteers
in the southern suburbs working to give a hand up to people seeking assistance from us, this new Freds Van service
is another way we are able to better support the community. If you are able to donate a few hours of your time
once a month please consider volunteering with us today.
To support Freds Van so that Vinnies can continue to assist men, women and children who are doing it tough,
please call Freds Van on 8112 8720.
