How did I create my sample tracks?

To create sample tracks the EXS24 sampler is a must have plug-in. It

comes with the logic software and functions either through logic
library sounds or the use of your own recorded audio. To begin my
sample tracks, I first recorded in some audio. These were short,
simple sounds, as my plan was to manipulate them using the
internal plug-ins. My aim was to then create three 2 minute & 30
seconds long tracks using 1 sound if not, maximum of 3 sounds.
To begin with I recorded in audio like so,

The little
blue sign
indicates
that the
track is an
audio track.
No midi can
be recorded
with audio
tracks, only

The RED R
button means
that the channel
is armed. This
means that once
this is pressed
you can begin
recording your
sounds/instrume
nts.

The green bar is the same as

on the mixer. It enables you to
see the tracks levels and can
help you avoid clipping in
your track when recording.
You want your level to be
green allowing slight yellow.

Once my audio was all recorded in I

had to bounce them into an mp3 so that I can import them into the
EXS24 sampler. I did this by clicking bounce on the right channel
(bottom left) and saved it to the appropriate folder. I did each sound
individually so that I didnt bounce two sounds onto one mp3.

Once I

had

window. They

created all my
sounds I then
put them into
the EXS24

sampler like so;

1. First of all I selected a software instrument track

2. I then went across to the far left

column at the bottom left and where
says instrument I selected the
EXS24 sampler stereo output.

3. After the sampler had

loaded, I clicked on the
small edit button (top
right hand corner) where
provided me with a pop
window.

it

it
up

4. On the tabs at the top of the window the only buttons

necessary are zone and instrument.
5. I clicked zone which then had a drop down menu. From the
menu, I chose the option load multiple samples.

6. This then created

another window
where I could
browse my files to
find my bounced
MP3 sounds. Once
I found them I
selected add
then done and
they loaded up
with the previous
pop-up window.

7. You can decide what

key you want the
sound to start at. C1
is the example given
so I just pressed
select and my sound
appeared as a little
grey box, which I then
stretched out across
the keyboard.

8. After I did this I then clicked instruments and saved it to the

sampler instruments folder in logic.
9. Once I could get the sound up in logic I then started to
experiment with other plug-ins such as tape delay, reverb,
distortion etc to manipulate the same sound in different ways.

10.
Once I had all my sounds in the sampler and edited I
began to structure my track.

After acquiring all the sounds I needed to create my

sample tracks I then produced three tracks. I used a
mixture of my own created sounds that I recorded in
live and a use of samples from tracks already made.
Once I put them into the EX24 sampler I then started to
play around with the settings. I figured I could reverse
the sounds and with added effects such as tape delay I
had created a whole new sounds altogether. When
creating my sample tracks I did have inspiration from
sampling artists such as MO. Her tracks feature samples
sounds both recorded and pre-corded and are put
through a sampler to create reverse effects and brand
new sounds altogether.
My first track features sounds that I used from prerecorded drum kits and a mixture of sounds I recorded
in live. I used the EX24 sampler following the method

written above to create my track. I used a drumbeat so

that the track had a structure and all the other sounds
were to provide layers to help bind the track together. I
wasnt really aiming to create a normal track, as I
wanted to experiment with the sounds using the plugins provided by the sampler to manipulate and create
new textures of sounds. I feel I delivered this
successfully throughout this track and I was very
pleased with my outcome.
My second track features samples from the song
Pancake Moony as they use a lot of space type sounds
and samples. I felt this was a track I could gain
inspiration from as it featured lots of edited vocal
samples as well as sampled synths. You can hear that
my sample was taken from the intro of the song as I
found it an interesting sound to work with. The EX24
provided me with lots of ways to manipulate the sound
as I chose to reverse it and then I could change
distortion levels, the envelope, phasers, filters and
many more. Again similar to track 1 I wasnt really
going for a proper track structure so I just created
layers of sound. This track also featured samples form
other pre-recorded songs.
My third and final track was my favourite as I sampled
not only sounds but vocals too. You can hear when
listening through that I have reversed the bass melody
of the song. I also used effects like delay, reverb and
pitch shifter on the vocals so that it gave the track more
of an experimental feel. I felt I achieved this well as it
was very atmospheric and it produced a track that
sounds like it has a vast amount more layers than it
actually does.
