Hello, Hannah.
Hi.
Umcan you tell us how many languages you speak
and what they are?
Yes, uh I speak three languages. English, French,
and Japanese.
Good, how interesting. How did you learn them?
Um well, I was brought up in Montreal and you had
to learn French, um when you were in school. And
Japanese I chose to learn, I thought it would be, you
know, useful to learn it.

Hi.
How many languages do you speak and, er what
are they?
Well, I speak English and I speak Spanish.
Uh-huh. And how did you learn them?
Um I was living in Ecuador. Actually, uh more my
parents moved to Ecuador and so I had to learn
to speak Spanish or I couldnt speak to anybody.
Right. Where did you learn? At school?
Uh-huh. I went to school and I had to speak Spanish
in class, er but I always spoke English at home.
Right. What was the most difficult aspect of learning
a foreign language?

Hello.
Hi. Can you tell us how many languages you speak
and, er which ones they are?
Um well, I speak English, which is my native
language, and Spanish.
Oh right. And how did you learn Spanish?
Well, really by listening to cassettes in my car and
watching videos at home and then, um well, I got a
weekly magazine for about two years.
So you are pretty much self-taught. Was it difficult?
Um well Ive got to say when I meet real live
Spanish-speakers I find it pretty difficult, yeah.
What did you think the most important aspect would
be?
Oh, definitely to have a very good grounding in
grammar.
Uh-huh.

I hope you dont mind my calling you Mary.
Well, most people do call me Mrs. Davies
Oh, of course. A generational difference, you know,
the customs have changed so much in the U.S. over
the last fifty years, havent they?
Yes, they certainly have.
Do you think children behave very differently now?
From my day, yes, I do, because children in my day
were supposed to be seen and not heard. And the
discipline, it was very strict. Everyone wanted their
children to learn to be disciplined, to work hard, and
to respect their elders.
I see. And what do you think Pete, as a member of a
younger generation? Do you think children behave
very differently now?
Yes, I think they do. Um there is less discipline
now. I mean, sometimes discipline is a problem
nowadays, and then you definitely... well, theyre
definitely not meant to be seen and not heard.
Theyre a vocal part of family life, arent they? So,
things have changed.
Hmm. And I suppose the whole family structure has
changed, hasnt it? Who was the head of the family
in your day, Mrs. Davies?
Oh, it was always the father! Um I mean, he was
even served first at dinner, uh he was the one that
made all the main decisions in the family.
Ah, yes.
Hmm.
And Pete, do you think thats still the same in todays
world?
Not to the same extent, no, and I mean in a lot of
families, in our family, we all make decisions
together. Its not like the father is the lord and

Part 1
Nurse Coxall had been running Ward 4 for many years. Her pride and
joy was her own little office, scrupulously clean, its walls glistening
with fresh white paint. She sat at her desk, her eyes unseeing. Who
was this new doctor, anyway? Some silly kid fresh from medical
school? What right had he to interfere in the running of her ward?
She had met him yesterday. He had driven into the hospital grounds
and almost driven over her. There were plenty of speed bumps to slow
people down. Besides, almost everybody who worked at the hospital
knew she walked through the grounds at that time of day.
Are you all right? he had said, getting out of his car. I wasnt paying
attention. He seemed embarrassed. Um, maam, Im really sorry.
She couldnt help smiling. Thats all right, Mr. she paused politely.
DoctorDr. Green. Ive just arrived, as you can see, he grinned.
Im taking over Ward 4.
Nurse Coxall noticeably stiffened. Ward 4? she echoed.
Look, hop in, and Ill drive you to where youre going.
They sat in silence and soon were climbing the dingy staircase leading
to Nurse Coxalls little apartment. Once inside, she took off her coat.
Sit down, Doctor, Ill make some coffee.
Sitting drinking the coffee, Dr. Green explained that he had always
been interested in psychiatric work and when he had finished his
studies, he had applied for this post in one of the countrys largest
psychiatric hospitals. He had not expected to get the job, but he did,
and without an interview.
He told her of the great changes and new ideas he hoped he would
introduce. For instance, he said, the nurse on Ward 4 has been
working there for ten years. She must have lost her identity to some
extent. Her patients must be more like children to her than sick
people. He leaned forward. You know, Nurse, she is in danger of

Why?
Well, what she told us was that where we were
staying, in that old tower, that it had burned down
one night about twenty years before that. Yeah.
And that a young girl, the daughter of the old
owners of the inn, had died in the fire. Yeah! She
slept in the same bedroom we were sleeping in!
And that was the exact same date that we smelled
the smoke on the anniversary of her death in
that old tower!
