HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000

Storage vs. IBM Storwize V7000
Elevator pitch
Customers need storage that can handle
new and unpredictable demands without
wasting valuable resources or requiring a
storage expert to manage. With new HP
3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage, gone are the
days of choosing between performance,
scalability, simplicity, and robust features.
Now customers can have it all at an
affordable price.

The opportunity
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage can
meet business needs without trade-offs.
Itguarantees to double virtual machine
(VM) density to help customers get the most
out of server virtualization.1 Since HP 3PAR
StoreServ 7000 Storage uses a common
software architecture for all models,
midrange customers have access to the
same value as large enterprise customers.

Competitive comparisons
HP competitor: IBM Storwize V7000
HP competitive advantages:
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 thin
provisioning: HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 thin
technology is powered by the virtualized
HP 3PAR OS and a custom ASIC that
provides the zero detect that HP 3PAR
Thin Persistence and Thin Conversion
exploit. This boosts capacity utilization

by removing allocated but unused space,

and is guaranteed to reduce capacity
requirements by 50 percent.2 IBM Storwize
V7000 storage offers thin provisioning, but
it requires separate thin-provisioning pools
for each data service level. Those pools are
silos of allocated-but-unused capacity that
requires manual setup, provisioning, and
management.
Tiering: IBM Easy Tier may be no charge
software, but, IBM limits the tiering option
to only two levels. SSDs are required
to enable the tiering functionality and
IBM uses low performing, low reliability
MLC SSD drives. 3PAR StoreServs
Adaptive Optimization software offers
greater flexibility in policies, autonomic
management, and tiering (3 tiers). In
contrast to IBM (which uses MLC drives),
high performing SLC-based SSD drives are
used in 3PAR StoreServ 7000.
Thin Built in ASIC: HP 3PAR StoreServ
Utility Storage is the first platform to
offer storage with Thin Built In. This
technology provides an efficient, ASICbased
mechanism for importing traditional
fat volumes from other platforms and
converting them to more efficient thin
volumes on HP 3PAR StoreServ arrays.
This hardware innovation boosts capacity
utilization by removing allocated but
unused space, and is guaranteed to reduce
your capacity requirements by 50 percent.2
IBM Storwize V7000 does not have custom
ASICs for zero data reclaim, so its thin
reclaim functionality is weaker.
Superior Remote Replication Host
Latency: Unlike the HP 3PAR StoreServ
7000, host writes requiring IBM Storwize
V7000 synchronous remote replication
require a second round trip over the remote
replication link, which can double the
latency that a host experiences.

iSCSI Remote Replication: Unlike HP 3PAR

StoreServ storage, the IBM Storwize V7000
does not offer iSCSI as a remote replication
option.
Unified Storage: IBM Storwize V7000 (with
separate controllers for block and file) is no
more unified from a hardware perspective
than the 3PAR StoreServ 7000 file and block
workload solution using the HP StoreEasy
3830 NAS gateway or HP StoreAll 9000
Storage. In fact, the 3PAR solution supports
CIFS on thin volumes, whereas the IBM
Storwize V7000 does not.

Why we win
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage is storage
made effortless, offering Tier 1 capabilities at
a midrange price. In that HP 3PAR StoreServ
7000 Storage uses a common software
architecture for all models, midrange
customers have access to the same value as
large enterprise customers:
Hardware-assisted HP 3PAR Thin
technology enables customers to reduce
capacity requirements by 50 percent.
Uniquely simple administration helps
manage virtual server environments
efficiently.
Ready-to-use storage that can be
reconfigured in just seconds lowers
disruption and downtime.
Proven chunklet technology can double
VM density to get the most out of server
virtualization.
Policy-based autonomic sub-LUN tiering
balances capacity, cost and performance.
Low entry price with nondisruptive
scalability to four nodes for the HP
3PAR StoreServ 7400 is a good value for
customers.

Responding to FUD
(fear,uncertainty, doubt)
Its not easy to manage HP 3PAR StoreServ
7000 Storage.
Response: The autonomic virtualized
architecture of HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000
Storage does not need segregating and
tuning in order to maximize application
performance. Segregating applications is
only necessary with architectures like the IBM
Storwize V7000.
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage needs
optimization software, because it has
hot spots.
Response: Not true. HP 3PAR StoreServ
7000 Storage avoids hot spots with wide
striping more effectively than IBM Storwize
V7000 storage, in that HP 3PAR StoreServ
7000 Storage can stripe across many
more disks. 3PAR StoreServ optimization
software features allow the movement of
data between different classes of service.

Response: HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000

Storage is very efficient for block and file
storage needs, with a single pool of storage.
Combine HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage
with the HPStoreEasy 3830 NAS gateway or
HPStoreAll 9000 Storage to manage block
and file workloads with a single storage
solution. TheIBM Storwize V7000 unified
claim is only due to the ability to manage
block and SONAS file storage with one GUI.

Questions to ask IBM

Q: Is true that IBM Storwize V7000 thin
provisioning is not appropriate for
high-performance workloads?

Overcoming objections

A: Yes. This is an extract from the IBM

Redbook Implementing the IBM Storwize
V7000: Thin-provisioned volumes require
additional I/O operation to read and write
metadata to the internal disks or to the
backend storage, which adds additional
load to the IBM Storwize V7000 nodes.
We therefore do not recommend the use
of these volumes for high performance
applications, or any workload with a high
write I/O component.

Objection: HP 3PAR storage doesnt offer

dedupe or compression.

Q: Does the IBM Storwize V7000 storage

support native IP replication?

Response: With HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000

Storage, you get all the space savings you
need with thin technology and zero (dedupe)
reclaim. In addition, Windows Server 2012
users can also make use of OS-based file
dedupe and encryption.

A: No. IBM uses host-based Tivoli Storage

Manager (TSM) FastBack software to
replicate data on Storwize V7000 storage. It
has been cleverly branded as IBM FastBack
for IBMStorwize, although it enjoys no
special integration with V7000 storage.

Objection: HP 3PAR storage doesnt support

SAS disk drives.

Q: Is it true that IBM Storwize V7000 storage

does not offer hardware assisted space
reclaim for thin-provisioned volumes?

Response: The entire HP 3PAR StoreServ

portfolio now supports SAS disk drives.
Objection: Is HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage
unified (block and file) storage?

Share with colleagues

For HP and Channel Partner internal use only.

A: Yes. IBM Storwize V7000 storage does

not do hardware-assisted thin persistence.
In contrast, HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage
dynamically reclaims space, and has no
performance trade-offs when doing thin
provisioning for mission-critical applications.
