performance in international tests, but also deal with other problems

The Selangor government has told Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris
Jusoh that he should also stake his job on solving other problems plaguing the
education system, not just Malaysian students performance in international
tests.

"Theseincludedpoortrainingandmanagementofteachers,repeatedpoliticalinterferencein
curriculum,aswellasallegedimproprietiesineducationrelatedprocurementandinstancesof
prejudiceagainstminoritystudents.

problemsandalsobewillingtoputhisjobonthelineinresolvingthem,"hesaidtodayina
statement.
Idrisyesterdaysaidhewasconfidentthatstudentswouldperformbetterinthisyear'sPisaand
TIMSSafterdismalperformanceswhichsawMalaysianeducationrankingsdropwhencompared
withstudentsinotherpartsoftheregion.
"Ichallengeyou.IsaythatwhenthePisaandTIMSSresultscomeoutthisyear,wewilldobetter.I
amgivingthisguaranteeasaminister.
"IamputtingmyselfatstakebecauseIknowwearegoingtoperformbetter,"hesaidinParliament.
Idrisdeclinedtocommentwhenaskedwhathewoulddoifthe2015ProgrammeforInternational
StudentAssessment(Pisa)andTrendsinInternationalMathematicsandScienceStudy(TIMSS)
resultsshowedadeclineinsteadofanimprovement.
NikNazmicommendedIdris'smovetoputhisjobonthelinetoguaranteebetterresultsinPisaand
TIMSS.
"ToofewcabinetministersintheUmnoBarisanNasionalgovernmentarewillingtotakepersonal
responsibilityovertheirrespectiveportfolios.
"WeplantoholdIdristohispledgeandeagerlyawaitdetailsofhisplantoensurethatMalaysian
studentsdobetterinthePisaandTIMSS,"hesaidinastatementtoday.
NikNazmialsoremindedIdrisoftheanxietyfeltbyparents,educatorsandemployersthatwent
beyondthetwoglobalassessmenttests.
HesaidtheproblemsinMalaysia'seducationweremuchbiggerthanhowstudentsperformedin
PisaandTIMSS,althoughthedeclineinperformancewasworrying.March24,2015.
