shading is a lot of extra work, but I have noticed that even things which don't
do shading regularly (tv cartoons and such) will still put it in in high contras

two things that kinda jumped out at me as a little off, I think ending a sentenc

>alternative.
Well to be fair, this is a ramble. I've been rambling about it a bit lately. I d
isliked these pages because of the wordiness but they're essential because of wh
at a date is.
Providing mis/information, offering vulnerability, and advancing an agenda. Brea
d crumbs for things to come, lines in the water to be seen and developed upon.
And that's a pretty nasty way to look at it, but mechanically that's the point o
f a date small talk; to see what the person really is. And I think we accomplish
ed something here with that, balanced out Connor and Erin and let them blah it u
p a little while also naturally learning a bit more about them without it feelin

g like an exposition dump.

If not for our tone and pace (ie. nothing dramatic has really happened yet), thi
s wouldn't work. If we were a bit more action movie Dresden Files going on, it'd
be a messy conversation that gets in the way of action. Careful balancing act-goddamn if that isn't becoming my fucking catchphrase.
Depends on the story, depends on the context. Environment is important too. I th
ink Erin and Connor have said plenty with their body language and action prior t
o this about the kind of people they might be, so this is the first time they ge
t to say what kind of people they think they are. The truth somewhere in between
.
Compared to the next update which has some convo but between people who really k
now each other, I prefer the implications of a developed relationship over intro
ductions. But that's just me. Feels more natural to have a status quo en media r
es than to start a story at the beginning. Easier to buy into a mess already mad
e than to watch someone make one.
>>73715584
Yeah, we're still experimenting with stuff. The B- thing wasn't something I expe
cted a bubble to end on. He's trying out new coloring stuff and balancing it out
with a looser but more detailed style.

You'd be surprised what a sense of adventure and a haircut can accomplish. Had a
date with a guy, we ended up fight-clubbing it up on the beach, drunk off our a
sses. Well worth the price of admission to hear a man cry because he's never hur

Glad I could help. I guess if I had a general tip it'd be "Never have a conversa

ater without making an obvious callback.
This update will be a lot more useful upon the end of the issue. Double-talk is
fun.

Yes, but I think it's more complicated than "cartoony vs realistic".
Digger, for instance, stars a cartoon wombat in a mostly serious fantasy story.
Works just fine.
Haven't read Cerebus the Aardvark, but from what I understand it similarly does
the "serious story starring a cartoony protagonist" thing.
It will be a little harder to get the audience to suspend their disbelief that m
ore zany-looking characters are having serious problems, but it's something that
can be overcome.

So yeah, you can tell a story like yours absolutely fine with simplified drawing
s. You'll just want to make sure they're of the sort that make the reader not ev

act drawings and see just how much detail is necessary to get things across. Try
constructing people as geometric shapes and seeing how you can connect them tog
ether with as few lines as possible. Simplify your robots down as just the indiv

This basic style would be adequate (even if the detail i can see in the sketch l

so basically what you need to work on now is your proportioning. Because that's
not very good. But the shapes aregood. I like how the thigh cowling overlaps the
knee area, which is fine because it wouldn't need to bend forward, only backwar
d. Elbow joints might not be good but we can work on that. It helps to play with
(or go look at) posable action figures to get a feel for how much range of moti
on you need. But it doesn't have to be 100 percent realistic either, a lot of br

you're falling into something easy to do, which is making each part in proportio
n to the part it's touching, more or less, but not the whole thing in total
that and eyes too close together, mouth too low, face confined to too small an a
rea on the head.. You're going to want to take a holistic approach to proportion

A more serious tone doesn't necessairly need for realism.
There's SO MANY things to take into concideration on what you want to try to evo
ke from your audience and what yout think how different styles will be recieved
by the audience.
Plus, you also got to concider the genre. Serious action/sci-fi/thriller/etc...
comics often do go for a realistic style. But dramas and works which are intende
d to be a character study often go for abstraction instead (see stuff like Aster
ios Polyp or Jimmy Corrigan).

This guy again, I've finally started being able to put together a decent story t
hat doesn't feel TOO done-to-death.

Basic outline is this:

>angry directionless 20 year old has seen some shit, gets into a bad fight and s
eriously hurts someone
>this isn't exactly his first offense so he'll be doing some hard time if he get
s caught
>gets away without the cops figuring out it was him (right away), parents aren't
exactly responsible human beings so they send him to live up in Maine at his la
te grandfather's lakehouse to lay low for a while under a new identity
>takes a job working at some restaurant and volunteer fire department that gets
like 30 calls a year
>starts getting weird vivid dreams about random locations and people from the to
wn he's hiding out in, paranormal/mystery shit ensues with adventures
That's all I got for now. What you guys think? I've switched up the character de
sign a little bit too so it's not like a straight up cartoon of myself. He still
looks similar but not entirely. Think more like a young Luke Glanton from that
movie "The Place Beyond The Pines". He even rides an old honda dual sport bike l
ike he did.

Well, she generally doesn't seem to have THAT much stuff on her; at least not ac

Yeah, it's not incredibly hard to draw or anything, it's just that "wait, I forg

Yeah - I hope I'm just getting more efficient and getting more stuff right in my
first attempt, rather than skimping on quality. I'm leaving for another country
for a week early tomorrow, so I might be rushing a bit to get these pages done
before then.
I'm considering increasing my update rate a bit to take advantage of it if I can
keep a proper quality, but I think I'll wait for school to start first so I kno
w how much free time I'm gonna have and just build up my buffer 'till then.
Anyway, decided to put a dog chasing a girl in the 3rd panel.
Anonymous 2 hours ago No.73722291? >>73722316
Here is my pitch.
>Theres this girl knight named Mindy who lives in this kingdom who works for the
kings guards because her parents kicked her out for freeloading (she and all 3
of the main characters are 25 years old.).
>Mindy gets fired by the king for being to reckless after a dragon attack where
she killed the dragon when the other male knights got either bunt to a crisp or
ran away like chickens.
>Theres is also this shop keeper named Lily who is a magic user and is secretly
a cat girl as she always wares a hat & dress to cover her ears and tail because
of some people hate cat people, her shop almost got shut down because she can't
pay her rent on time but when Mindy and her meet they end up being BFFs and end
up saving her shop which also ends up being her house.
>Along side the 2 ladies there is a male freelance knight named Jacob who wonder
s around the land, being kicked out from a boarding house because he did not get
along with it's owner, he ends up finding Mindy & Lily and ends up living with
them as the money he brought in was enough to save Lily's business/house.
>First story plot involves Mindy finding a reward poster for killing a bigger dr
agon who happens to be the head dragon of the dragon she killed when she was sti
ll working for the king, she kills the head dragon only to have the king take al
l of the money to repair all of the damages caused by the last dragon she killed
.

A future setting is better than a modern one because people have less preconcept

uristic setting. It's a rather poor fit at present.

loose genre that people never really seem to get tired of - maybe something bas

K.
First off, what exactly is a "knight" in this future setting? A mech pilot? A su
per soldier wearing power armor? It seems unlikely that a guy on a horse with a
long pointy stick is the best way to deal with a giant fire-breathing serpent in
the 25th century or whenever this is happening. Even with modern tech, you'd ex
pect to send in a gunship helicopter or something. Whatever the knight's exact g
ear is, it's gonna seem strange and need explaining that the military lets her j
ust keep it after they fire her - imagine a modern day fighter pilot getting to
keep their jet after they retire? Shit, there's nowhere in the world where it's
even legal for a private person to own that kind of stuff.
Second, the king is kind of incongruous with a more developed setting - having t
he king interact personally with his elite troops is a convention carried over t

o fantasy from stuff like the Song of Roland or the Arthurian cycle, where the k
ing knows his elite soldiers personally because he's also the head of the milita
ry. That's not even going into the issues of how differently a monarchy seems to
the reader when it's not in a context of "oh, they just haven't come up with de
mocracy yet". I'd suggest having the kingdom be a republic, and having the MC em
barrass and get fired by someone within the military.
Cat girl works as-is. Maybe have cat people be the result of genetic engineering
?
Free lance knight is gonna run into some similar problems - what kind of person
has access to the supply network required to keep himself stocked in mech fuel,
repairs, ammunition or whatever without being affiliated with some larger organi
zation? "PMC" has a very different ethical ring to it than "free-lance knight" d
oes.
Reward/bounty posters, again, are more of a lawless area thing - suitable for th
e wild west, or a fantasy setting, but really out of place in most modern contex
ts where the government is stable. I can't think of how to fix that.

Just do it. when you create a part of the world expand upon it. for example in m
y comic there's a character who uses a unique fighting style that originated fro
m her pacifist ancestors culture. They'd shift between weights to create ripples
in water and dance on them without the water becoming too chaotic. When her peo
ple were dragged into race war an unrefined version of it was created to out fig
ht the far superior ironblood race. however after the decline of her people it f
aded into obscurity until the age of the freelancer at which point a prominant s
urvivor of her race adopted and refined it. After two generations of clones from
that survivor the character perfects the fighting style and teaches it.
