for Wind Turbines

Westermo World Wide . . . www.westermo.com

Westermo was established in the early 70s. The head ofce
is located 150 km southwest of Stockholm, Sweden. During
these three decades the Westermo
company has grown into a company group with subsidiaries
in England, Germany, Norway, France and partners in over
30 countries around the world.
Westermo is today a well-known brand name in Industrial
Data Communications. Our 30 years of experience on the
industrial market goes far beyond our own products.
We know the problems that can occur in applications
installed in harsh industrial environments and therefore can
offer you optimal solutions both regarding functionality as
well as economy. All our products are specially designed to
operate reliably in harsh industrial environments and in
applications requiring high levels of reliability and availability.
Let Westermo be;
Your Natural Choice for Reliable Ethernet Solutions.

Wind Turbines
Westermo has offered data communication solutions for wind turbines, both
for land and offshore installations, for several years. The most common interface used today is Ethernet. Westermo can provide solutions from unmanaged
switches up to our Bridge Link Concept which provides full link redundancy.
This brochure shows some of the solutions we have installed worldwide.

Westermo offers a wide range of products

Ethernet

Wireless

Ethernet is the most common data communication standard used today. Westermo offers a wide product range, from unmanaged switches
up to the fastest redundant ring switch on the market, regarding link
recovery. Serial adapters, which make it possible to connect older
equipment with a serial interface to an existing Ethernet network.
We have both wireless solutions (WLAN) as well as products using
SHDSL technique, that offers a high-speed connection on a copper
cable. Our routers secure remote connection to an Ethernet network.

For some reason it may not be possible to use a copper or a bre

optic cable as a communication media. Westermo offers several wireless options depending on the application and distance between the
equipment. We can offer solutions using the common GSM / GPRS
network, WLAN or radio modem using the standard frequency 869
MHz (Europe).

Remote Access
The ability to create remote connections to equipment can provide
companys with great savings both in time and money. Not only this,
but improved customer service can also be offered. It is possible to
control, monitor, update software or fault nd, irrespective of where
the equipment is located, by means of a simple remote connection
using the public telephone / ISDN network or wireless solutions via
GSM / GPRS. Using our router provides a secure connection to an
Ethernet network.

SHDSL, Short Haul Modems

Our short haul modems provide the possibility to connect equipment
with a serial interface using a twisted pair copper cable over a long
distance. This can either be a point to point or a multidrop installation.
Using the SHDSL technique is it possible to achieve a data rate up to
2.3 Mbit/s giving the possibility to connect e.g. two different Ethernet
networks via a long distance copper cable.

Fibre Optic Modems

The main advantage of data transfer via bre is the bre cables
complete insensitivity to external interference. This means the choice
of bre cable is ideal for applications in environments exposed to
high levels of interference. Data transmission using bre also provides
benets such as high data rates over long transmission distances.
Westermo has a wide range of bre products for point-to-point,
multidrop or redundant ring. Westermo also offers specially adapted
products for different types of protocols.

Interface Converters
The RS-422/485 and 20 mA Current Loop are the standards for many
of the industrial data communication systems installed over the last
20 years. The well-known industrial standards, PROFIBUS and Interbus
use RS-485. The advantage of RS-422/485 is that connected devices
communicate via a common bus, which promotes easy and cost effective installation. Using RS-422/485 a high data rate is obtained over
relatively long distances. Westermo products can be used for 2-wire
or 4-wire connections, point to point or multidrop applications with
up to 32 devices connected on the bus. Using a repeater the signal is
regenerated, which allows further connected devices and increased
transfer distances.

This is an installation in a
single wind turbine using
our unmanaged switches.
Because of electrical
interference in the tower,
a ber optic link is used
to secure communication
from top to bottom. In the
top, an EDW-100 is used
to connect a serial device
to the network. It is also
possible to use a remote
connection to collect data
and control / monitor the
system.

A ber optic star network
is used from a centre to
each tower. Either single

depending on distances
to the towers. A remote
connection to the system
is also possible, where the
GSM modem provides the
possibility to automatically

Application
In this installation all the
towers are connected via
a redundant ber optic
ring. The R200 offers the
possibility to have up to
200 switches in one ring.
The R200 series is used
because the installation
requires three ber optic
ports in each tower.
To obtain higher reliability,
all switches on ground
level are supported with
dual power supplies.

This is an offshore installation where seven towers

are connected in two different multidrop connections. The tower furthest
away is equipped with a
camera directed backwards towards the other
towers for supervision.
For efcient use of bandwidth, all data concerning
control of the towers is
on VLAN 1 and the video
data is on VLAN 2. In this
installation copper cable is
used for communication
between the top and

This is an offshore installation where highest possible reliability was required.

It is based on a backbone
located in a centre, to
which up to six sub rings
can be connected via our
bridge link concept.
All towers in the sub rings
are connected in a redundant ring where two of
the towers are equipped
with R200 to obtain the
bridge link functionality.
This solution offers full
redundancy both in case
of hardware (switches)
or a link failure.

Bridge Link
The backbone ring
switches can be mounted
in a cabinet and connection between the switches
is done with copper cables
to create a redundant
ring. The software is the
same in all switches. The
functionality is decided
by conguration of the
switch to act either as a
focal point or ring member
and also in the sub rings
to identify which ports
should act as a primary
and secondary connection
to the backbone.

Member switches (L1-2
and L1-4) in the sub rings
are congured with 5TX
and 3FX ports. Two ber
ports are used to create
the ring and one is connected to the switch in the
top of the tower.
The bridge switches
(L1-1 and L1-3) are congured with 4TX and 4FX.
The fourth ber transceiver is used to connect the
sub ring to the backbone.
Switches L1-1 and L1-3
administrate whether the
primary (P1) or secondary
(S1) link should be active.

There is no limitation to
the number of sub rings
that can be connected to
the back bone. It is only a
matter of the number of
switches in the backbone.
Two R200 devices can
handle up to 6 sub rings,
4 can handle up to 12 sub
rings. Just add a pair of
R200 devices to the
backbone and 6 more sub
rings can be connected.
