can imagine some of our comrades smi1ing bitterly at the aboye title. and wondcring
what a Socialist journal can have to do vvith

The worker's share of art
Yes, that may well seem strange to us at present! Men to-d ay may s ee the pleasure of
unproductive energy - e nergy put fortb in
games and sports; but in productive energy in the task which must be finished before we
can eat, the task which wiIl begin agmn tomorrow, and many a to-morrow without
change or end till we are ended - pleasure in
tbat?

Nor must we forget that whatever is produced that i s worth anything is the work ofmen
who are in rebellion against the conupt
society of to-day - rebellion sometimes open,
sometimes veiled under cynicism, but by
which in any case lives are wasted in a strugg Ie, often in vain., against their fellow-men,
whicb ougbt to used for the exercise of specia! gi:fts for the benefit of tbe world

It may be, indecd, th.at till the social revolutioo is fuUy accomplished. and pexbaps for a
little while afterwards. men's surroundings
may go 00 getting plainer, grimmer, and
barer. 1 say for a little while afterwards,
because it may take men some time to shake
off the babits of penwy on tbe one hand and
inane luxury on the otber. which have been
forced upon th.em by com..mercialism . But
even in that th.ere is hope; for it is al least possible tbat all the oId superstitions and CODventionalities of art bave got to be swept away
before art can be boro again ~ that before tbat
new birth we shall have to be left bare of
everything that has been called art; that we
shall have nothing left us but tbe material S of
3rt, that Is tbe human race with its aspirations
and passioos and its borne, tbe earth ; 00
which materials we shall bave to use th.ese
tools, leisure and desire.
