OnthefirstthoughtofappearingintheCivilServicesExamination(C.S.E.),thefirstissueistheselectionof
optional.Inaway,selectionofrightoptionalisthemostcrucialstep.Postgraduatesinanydiscipline,
generallyprefertakinguptheirparentsubjectforPrelims.Thoughsuchselectionisquitelogical,aspirants
withanysciencedisciplineastheirbasesubjectmustponderovertheissuemoreseriously.Maths,
Physics,Geologyetc.,optionalforPrelimsmustbeoptedfor,onlyifoneisoutandoutthoroughwiththe
subject.AsUPSCensuresthat'some'candidatesfromeverydisciplinemustqualifyfortheMains,
aspirantswithasciencesubjectmustjudgethemselvescorrectlyregardingtheirowncapabilitytobe
includedinthese'some'.Someofthesocialsciences(e.g.History,SociologyandPublicAdministration)
optedbyquiteasignificantmajoritycan,however,beamuchsaferbet,particularlyforthose(ordinary
sciencegraduates)whodonothaveanyspecificparentsubjectorforthosewhoarenotabletodevelop

GeneralStudies(GS)hastobepreparedonquiteadifferentplanebecausethecontentofthispaperistoo
spreadoutandbecauseanyissue,majororminor,canbeaskedobjectively.Traditionally,10+2level
booksofNCERToranystateeducationboardhadbeencoveringamajorpartofthecontentbut,these
days,theitemsinnewsduringthelastoneyearorso,arebeingaskedquitefrequently.Problemsare
generallyfacedineverydayscience(bythecandidateswithsocialsciencesbackground)orinmental
abilityorinthefundamentalsofeconomics.ThemostimportantaspectforthepreparationofGSPrelims,
therefore,istoidentifytheloopholesandplugthemurgently.
Manyofyouprepareasubjectintermsof"reading"(once,twice,thriceetc.)withorwithoutunderliningthe
importantfacts.Itresultsnotonlyinlongertimeofpreparation,butalsomanyimportantpointsmayskip.
Also,evenifyouunderlinethehighlightingpoints,mostofyouhavethetendencytoreadthetextinfull
whilegoingforthesubsequentreadings.Itis,therefore,advisablethattextsmustbereadonceandall
importantpoints(likelytobeforgotten)recordedseparatelysothatyouneednotstudyvoluminoustexts
again.Thiswouldsaveonyourtimeandshouldresultingreaterefficiency.TheMains:Forrightapproach,
thepreparationofMainsshouldstartbeforeoratleastconcurrentwithPrelims.Justbecauseyouhaveto
prepareforEssay,GSandthetwooptional(Englishandaregionallanguage,theone/twoother
compulsory,donotrequireaseparatepreparation)younevergetenoughtime(toprepareforallthese)
afterthedeclarationofPrelims'results.Further,whilePrelimsisonlyascreeningtest,itisonthebasisof
yourperformanceinMains,onwhichmainlydependsthefinaloutcomeofyourefforts.Strategically,
therefore,thepreparationfortheexaminationshouldstartaboutoneyearinadvanceandyoushouldthink
aboutappearinginthePrelimsonlywhenyouhavehadastronggripovertheMains'subjectmatter.
