This course is designed for English Philology students who want to enlarge their
lexical competence by means of an online course. In a short and intensive
programme, we have developed activities to expand word knowledge, collocations
and lexical phrases and encourage the use of dictionary look-up, linguistic corpora
and other linguistic resources on the web. Activities aim at processing discrete
lexical elements (synonyms, false friends, homonyms, homographs, homophones,
metaphors, clines etc.) through gap-filling, multiple choice questions, semantic
maps or quizzes and are concerned with the development of lexis both at the
sentential and the textual level. In this sense, we will provide students with initial
home base sites from which they can branch out to find others. Thus, they will
profit from visits to other websites and even make use of the Internet software.
Participants will also benefit from sharing experiences with others enrolled on this
course. Due to the nature of the subject, this course will emphasize real life
examples rather than theoretical issues.
