Photographs, fingerprints, palmprints, and radi body is first viewed, the hands are covered with paper bags. ion is confirmed by fingerprint comparison as raphs of the head and abdomen are taken. When the ‘The body is received wearing a black vest, T-shirt, jeans with a belt and holder, boxers, two socks, and two black boots, which are retained, A white metal necklace with pendant and a yellow metal band-style ring are left on the body and released. Personal effects including cigarettes a lighter, one quarter, one nickel, and two pennies are released with the body, ‘The body is that of a normally-developed, white male which appears consistent with the recorded age of 44 years. When nude. the body measures 69 inches in length and weighs 200 pounds, There is good preservation in the absence of embalming. Rigidity is full, Lividity is blanching on the posterior surfaces of the body. The body is cool subsequent to refrigeration. ‘The sealp is balding with fine short blonde hair. A full mustache and beard are on the face. The irides appear hazel, and there are no petechiae of bulbar ot palpebral surfaces of the conjunctivae. The ears, nose and lips are notmally-formed. The mouth hhas natural dentition in fair condition, The neck is without masses and the trachea is midline. The chest is symmetrical. The back is unremarkable. A tattoo that reads "I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME PHILLIPHIANS 4:13" is on the anterior right arm. A linear sear is on the posterior let hand, Seattered irregular scars are on the posterior right forearm. Healing lesions are on the upper left side of the chest and the sight chest. Several round healing lesions are on the posterior leit forearm. EVIDENCE OF TREATMENT ‘None. EVIDENCE OF INJURY ‘There are multiple gunshot wounds and blunt force injuries to be described below without regard to chronological sequence, 1. Gunshot wound of the vertex of the head: ‘Around, 1/4 inch in diameter gunshot wound entrance is on the vertex of the sealp, 1 inch left of midline on the parietal aspect. A.1/16 inch in width marginal abrasion surrounds the wound that extends out to 1/4 inch in width ftom 7 to 11 o'clock, Several, vp to 1/4 inch in length lacerations, extend from the entrance wound. There is no soot ot stippli [After perforating the skin of the let parietal scalp, the bullet sequentially perforates the left parietal bone, the left parietal lobe, the left temporal and frontal lobes, the base of the skull, including the left petrous ridge and the left orbital plate, and penetrates into the subcutaneous tissues of the left side ofthe face. ‘A deformed, copper jacket base is recovered from the subcutaneous tissues of the left side of face. Additional copper jacket and lead fragments are recovered from within the calvarium. All are photographed and sealed within an appropriately-labeled envelope. ‘The direction of the bullet is downward, right to leftand back to front. Blve-purple contusion and ecchymosis suerounds the lateral aspect of the left eye with petechial-rype abrasions atthe lateral aspect of the left eye. ‘The calvarium is opened without the use of a saw. Extensive fracturing involves all bones of the calvarium and the base of the skull has exteasive comminuted fracturing, Patchy subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhage is identified. Significant portions of the brain parenchyma are pulpefied including the bilateral temporal lobes and the left parietal lobe. The frontal lobes, right parietal lobe, brainstem, and cerebellum have extensive lacerations, The occipital lobes are predominantly intact Il, Gunshot wound of the head: Case: IFS-15-08019 - CC Page 3 of 8 Boyett, Daniel Raymond ‘Around, 1/4 inh in diameter gunshot wound entrance is on the let temporal scalp, 3 inches below the top of the head and 1-1/2 inches posterior to the superior attachment of the left ear. Marginal abrasion surrounds the wound and measures 1/4 inch from 10 to 2 o'clock, and 1/16 ineh from 2 to 10 o'clock. There is no soot or stippling, ‘After perforating the skin of the left temporal scalp, the bullet sequentially perforates the [eft temporal bone, the left and right ‘temporal Lobes, the base of the skull atthe right petrous ridge and right orbital plate, and penetrates into the lateral aspect of the right side of the neck, A deformed bullet is recovered from the subcutaneous tissues ofthe right side of the neck, photographed, and sealed within an appropriately-labeled envelope, The direction of the bullet is left fo right, back to front, and downward, Purple eechymoses surrounds the upper aspect of the right eye, Additional associated injuries are described above in gunshot wound #1. IIL. Gunshot wound of the left side of the abdomen: A4-x2 inch irregular deep graze wound involves the Jateral aspect of the left side of the abdomen, ‘The graze involves the skin ‘and subcutaneous tissues only and is centered 28 inches below the top of the head on the lateral midline. Graze abrasion lies atthe superior and inferior aspect of the wound and several embedded fragments of lead and eopper jacket are recovered, sealed within an appropriately-labeled envelope, and submitted to the Criminal Investigation Laboratory, Directionality cannot be definitively ascertained. IV. Blunt force injuries: Red abrasion is on the posterior proximal right third digit. A 1/4 inch red abrasion ison the posterior proximal let fifth digit. Scaltered red-brown contusions are on the anterior right thigh and the anterior legs ‘These injuries, having been once described, will not be repeated. The body cavities contain no adhesions or abnormal collections of fuid, HEAD: See EVIDENCE OF INJURY. NECK: The soft tissues and prevertebral fascia are unremarkable, The hyoid bone and loryng Jumen of the larynx is not obstructed. cartilages are intact, The CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: The intimal surface of the abdominal aorta is free of significant atherosclerosis. The aorta and its major branches and the great veins are normally distributed and unremarkable. The pulmonary arteries eontain no thromboemboli. The pericardium, epicardium, and endocardium are smooth, glistening, and unremarkable. There are no thrombi in the atria or ventricles. The foramen ovale is closed. The coronary arterial system is free of significant atherosclerosis ‘The atrial and ventricular septa are intact, The cardiac valves are unsemarkable. The myocardium is dark red-brown and firm, and there are no focal abnormalities. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: The upper airway is unobstructed, The laryngeal mucosa is smooth and unremarkable, without petechiae, The pleural surfaces are smoath and glistening. The major bronchi are unremarkable. Sectioning of the lungs discloses a dark red-blue, moderately congested parenchyma HEPATOBILIARY SYSTEM: The liver is covered by a smooth, listen moderately congested, The gallbladder contains approximately 2 mL of dark green bile, with no caleuli spsule, The pareachyma is dark red-brown and GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM: The esophageal mucosa is gray, smooth, and unremarkable, The stomach contains approximately 600 mL of tan-brown fluid and pastally-digested food. There are no tablets or capsules. The gastric mucosa has normal rugal folds, and there are no ulcers. The small and large intestines are externally unremarkable. ‘The appendix is present. The pancreas is unremarkable externally and upon sectioning. GENITOURINARY SYSTEM: The capsules of both kidneys strip with ease to reveal smooth and slightly lobulated surfaces, ‘The cortices are of nonnal thickness, with well-demareated corticomedullary junctions. The ealyees, pelves, ané ureters are ‘unremarkable, The urinary bladder contains approximately 200 mL of clear yellow urine. The mucosa is gray, smooth, and unremarkable. The prostate gland is unremarkable extemally and upon sectioning. ENDOCRINE SYSTEM: The thycoid and adrenal glands are unremarkable externally and upon sectioning LYMPHORETICULAR SYSTEM: The spleen is covered by a smooth, blue-gray, intact capsule, The parenchyma is dark red, The cervical, hilar, nd peritoneal lymph nodes are unremarkable, MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM: The lavieles ribs, stemum, pelvis, and vertebral column have no fractures. The . Exit: left upper back. Injuries: perforations of neck musculature, lett internal jugular vein, seventh cervical vertebral processes, and back smuseulature. Recovery: capper-colored jacket fragment and white metal fragments recovered along wound track of neck. ‘Trajectory: front to back, left to right and downward. Range of fire: no soot or stippling on skin. Gunshot wound of the abdomen (gunshot wound #2): 1. Entranee: lower abdomen, Injuries: penetration of abdominal subcutaneous tissue. ¢. Recovery: copper-colored jacket fragments and white metal fragments recovered sfom subcutaneous tissue of abdomen, 4d, Trajectory: froat to back, right to left, and upward, ce. Range of fire: no soot or stippling on skin. 3. Other injuries: 1, Abrasion of right upper arm with surrounding contusion, bb. Peterson, Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, Place 2, McLennan County, Texas. EXTERNAL EXAMINATION ‘The body is photographed, fingerprinted, palmprinted, x-rayed and tagged. When first viewed, the hands are begged. ‘The body is received dressed in a black leather vest, a black T-shirt, jeans, white briefs, socks, and boots. A knotted segment of leather on a hook is attached to a belt loop. Two lighters, a tube of Carmex tip balm, & raffle ticket, a broken wooden nickel, three SI bills, twelve quarters, eight dimes, five nickels. and fifleen pennies are received with the body. The pockets contain a ziplock baggie full ofa green leafy material and an additional smalt ziplock baggie containing a metallic dise. The elothing and ziplock baggies are retained. The other items are released. Gunshot defects are within the T-shirt and vest, A medium caliber, minimally deformed, copper jacketed, spent bullet is recovered from a defect in the back of the vest. The base of the bullet is inscribed *15-08020" over "JU". The bullet is photographed, sealed in an appropriately labeled envelope and submitted lo the Criminal Investigation Laboratory. ‘The body is that of a well-developed, well-nourished white man whose appearance is compatible with the stated age of 46 ‘years, The body weighs 190 pounds and is 72 inches long. The body is cool, rigor is fully developed, and the posterior Lividity is fixed. The body is well-preserved and is not embalmed. The ities are blue, and there ae no petechiae of the bulbar or palpebral surfaces ofthe conjunctiva. ‘There is no beard or mustache, The ears, nose and lips are unremarkable. The teeth are natural an in good condition. The chest and breasts are symmetrical. The abdomen is flat. The exteroal genitalia, anus and perineum are unremarkable, The penis is circumcised and the testicles are descended into the scrotum. The extremities are wellsdeveloged and symmetrical. EVIDENCE OF THERAPY None. IDENTIFYING MARKS AND SCARS ‘Numerous tattoos are on the scalp, neck, chest, right flank, back, right and left arms, right and left forearms, right and left hands, ‘and distal anterior righ thigh EVIDENCE OF INJURY Gunshot wound of chest: ‘There is a gunshot wound of entrance of the right side of the chest, located 13 inches below the top of the head and 1 inch to the right ofthe anterior midline of the chest. The entrance wound is circular, messures 1/4 inch in diameter, and is surrounded by a circumferential 1/16 inch marginal abrasion. There is no soot or stippling. After perforating the skin and subcutaneous tissue, the bullet sequentially perforates the stemum, the pericardial sac, the right auricle of the heat, the root of the aorta, the lower lobe of the right lung, the thoracic aorta, the body ofthe eighth thoracic vertebra, and the head of the right ninth rib ‘There is a gunshot wound of exit ofthe right side ofthe back, located 19-1/2 inches below the top of the head and 1-3/4 ineh to the right ofthe posterior midline, The entrance wound is ovoid, slightly imegular, measures 1/2 inch, and is surrounding by a circumferential, up to 1/4 inch, shored abrasion, There is no firearm residue, Associated with this wound, the wound track is hemorrhagic and pulpefied. The right pleural cavity contains 200 mL of Tiquid blood and the pericardial sac contains 150 mL of liquid blood, Mediastinal soft tissue hemorrhage is dense, ‘The directions of the bullet are from front to back and downward, with no significant left or right deviation Blunt force injuries: ‘The left side ofthe scalp has a stellate, full-thickness laceration which extends to the galea. The laceration measures 2 inches in ‘maximum dimension. Its centered 2 inches below the top of the bead and 3-1/4 inch superior to and 1/2 inch anterior to the superior attachment of the pinna of the let er. ‘There is tissue bridging within the depths of the wound. Reflection of the scalp reveals corresponding subscalpular and subgaleal hemorrhage. The margins are abraded and tissue bridging is within the depths of the wound. It is located 5-1/2 inches below the top of the head and 1 inch tothe left ofthe posterior midline. By intemal examination, there is associated subscalpular and subgaleal hemorthoge. ‘The right side of the head has @ 1-1/2 inch contusion with « horizontal, linear 1-1/4 inch abrasion on the superior edge and an obliquely oriented | inch linear abrasion on the inferior edge. Iti located 2-1/2 inches below the top of the head and 2-3/4 inches superior lo and | inch anterior to the superior attachment of the pinna of the right ear. Reflection of the scalp reveals corresponding subscalpular and subgaleal hemorrhage. ‘The undersurface of the chin has a 1 inch diameter abrasion. The right buttock has 8 1/4 inch abrasion. The posterior left elbow has a 1/2 inch diameter crusted abrasion, The anterior right knee has a 1-1/4 inch abrasion, Crusted up to 1/4 inch abrasions are scattered over the anterior left leg. INTERNAL EXAMINATION BODY CAVITIES: See previous description, The thoracic and abdominal organs are in their normal anatomic positions. The left pleural cavity and peritoneal cavity contain no fluid, There are no adhesions. HEAD: See previous description, The skull is free of factures. There is scant hemorrhage within the petrous ridges bilaterally ‘The dura and dural sinuses are unremarkable, There are no epidural, subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhages. The leptomeninges are thn and delicate. The cerebral hemispheres are symmetrical, with an unremarkable gyral patter. The eravial nerves and blood vessels are unremarkable. Sections through the cerebral hemispheres, brainstem, and cerebellum are unremarkable, There are no hemorthages inthe deep white matter or the basal ganglia, The cerebral ventricles contain no ‘blood. The spinal cord, as viewed from the cranial cavity, is uaremarkable ‘NECK: The soft tissues and prevertebral fascia are unremarkable. The hyoid bone and laryngeal cartilages are intact. The lumen of the larynx is not obstructed. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: See previous description. The intimal surface of the abdominal aorta is involved by mild atherosclerosis. The geste mucosa has normal rigal folds, and there are no ulcers. ‘The small and large intestines are extemally unremarkable, The appendix is preset. ‘The paneress is unremarkable externally and upoa sectioning GENITOURINARY SYSTEM: The capsules of both kidneys stsip with ease to revesl smooth and slightly lobulated surfaces. ‘The cortices are of normal thickness, with well-demarcated corticomedullary junctions. The calyces, pelves, and ureters are unremarkable. The urinary bladder contains approximately 20 mL of clear yellow urine. The mucosa is gray, smoot, and unremarkable. The prostate gland is unremarkable extermally and upon sectioning. ENDOCRINE SYSTEM: The thyroid and adrenal glands are unremarkable externally and upon sectioning. LYMPHORETICULAR SYSTEM: The spleen is covered by a smooth, blue-gray, intact capsule. The parenchyma is dark red. The cervical, hilar, and peritoneel lymph nodes are unremarkable. MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM: See previous description, The elavicles and pelvis have no fractures, The diaphragm is intact. The body is of large build and is obese, measuring 70 inches in length and weighing 263 pounds. There is good preservation in the absence of embalming, There is posterior slightly blanching livdity and partial rigidity. There are five electrocardiagram pads on the body. There is a Hep-Lock in the right forearm and in each antecubital fossa. There is a pulse oximeter probe on the right fourth fingertip. There is a Foley catheter in the urethra. An identification band encircles each wrist, EVIDENCE OF INJURY GUNSHOT WOUNDS ‘There are tree gunshot wounds, ofthe left buttock and of each lower extremity, which are numbered 1-3 for purposes of identification without regard to possible chronological sequence. GUNSHOT WOUND #1: There is @ gunshot wound of entrance in the upper outer quadrant ofthe left buttock, which isa 3/16 x 1/8 inch, transversely oriented oval defect that is centered 33-1/4 inches below the top of the head and 7-3/4 inches to the left of midline. No soot o stippling is present. There is a less than 1/16 inch circumferential marginal abrasion. There is a 1/16 to W/8 inch, light red marginal contusion After perforating the skin, subcutaneous tissue and musculature of the upper outer quadrant of the left buttock, the bullet perforates the proximal left femur, fracturing it Fragments of a jacketed small caliber bullet are recovered from the bone and muscolature of the left hip. All are placed into an appropriately labeled envelope and are submitted to Criminal Investigation Laboratory, The bullet travels back to front and downward, without significant deviation to the right or left. GUNSHOT WOUND #2: ‘There is a gunshot wound of entrance in the posteromedial proximal right thigh, which is a 34 x 7/16 inch, slightly iegular teordrop shaped defect that is centered 41-1/2 inches below the top ofthe head. No soot or sipping is present. Between 2:30 and 8:30 o'clock, there is ass than 1/16 inch marginal abrasion. Directly opposite the entrance defect, on the posteromedial proximal lef thigh, there sa 1-1/4 inch linear re abrasion thats oriented from anterotly to posterioaly. INCISED WOUND: ‘There isan incised wound of the right side of the neck, laterally, which isa 1-1/4 ineb, slightly ireular linear defect that is oriented from anteroinferiorly to posterosuperiorly. It is centered 8-3/4 inches below the top of the head and 3 inches to the sight of midline, as well as being centered 4-3/4 inches below and 1/2 inch posterior tothe superior attachment of the right ppinna. The defect penetrates the dermis. OTHER INJURIES: Inthe right frontal scalp, there isa 1-7/8 inch, jagged full thickness laceration to muscle. The superior margin js abraded to 3/16 inch with undermining to 1/2 inch. The inferior margin has light blue-purple contusion to 1/2 inch and undermining to 3/4 inch, ‘There are up to 1/2 inch light pink contusions on the nose. ‘There are no internal injuries ofthe head ‘On the mid chest, there is a4 inch re linear abrasion oriented from right superiorly fo left inferiorly; in line with this and inferior to it, there is «5/8 inch, red linear abrasion and a 1/8 inch red abrasion. To the right of the 5/8 inch red abrasion, there is another, almost transversely otiented red abrasion, On the left elbow there isa { inch medium red abrasion. On the medial right thigh there is a4 inch mottled blue contusion. INTERNAL EXAMINATION BODY CAVITIES: The thoracic und abdominal organs are in their notmal anatomic positions. The body cavities contain no adhesions or abnormal collections of fui. HEAD: See previous description. The skull is unremarkable. The dura and dural sinuses are unremarkable. There are no epidural, subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhages. The leptomeninges are thin and delicate, The cerebral hemispheres are symmetrical, with an unremarkable gyral pattem. ‘The cranial nerves and blood vessels are unremarkable. Sections through the cerebral hemispheres, brainstem, and cerebellum are unremarkable. There are no hemorrhages in the deep white matter or the basal ganglia. The cerebral ventricles contain no blood, The spinal cord, as viewed from the cranial eaviy, is unremarkable NECK: See previous desetiption. The soft tissues and prevertebral fascia are unremarkable. The hyoid bone ond laryngeal cartilages are intact. ‘The lumen of the larynx is not obstructed, CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: The pericardium, epicardium, and endocardium are smooth, elistening, and vasemarkable, ‘There are no thrombi in the aria or ventricles. The foramen ovale is closed. ‘The coronary arterial system is right dominant and the coronary arteries are focally up to 30% narrowed by atherosclerotic plaque. The cardiac valves are unremarkable. The atrial and ventricular septa are intact. The myocardium is dark red-brown aad firm, and without focal abnormality. The wall of the left ventricle measures 1.8 em in thickness and is symmetrical. The pulmonary arteries contain no thromboemboll, The aorta js of usual covsse and caliber and its intimal surface contains minimal atherosclerosis. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: The upper airway is unobstructed. The laryngeal mucosa is smooth and unremarkable, without petechiae. The pleural surfaces are smooth and glistening. The major bronchi are unreiatkable. Also around the neck is a black cord necklace with beads and a crucifix pendant. Thick black lesther cuffs are around cach wrist; the left cuff has a watch face. Within the pants pockets are an ink pen, Key ring, suber band, piece of notebook paper, piece of toilet paper, lip balm tube, lighter, one $20 dollar bill, one $10 dollar bill, three $1 dollar bills, and one ‘quarter, Fragments of black and clear plastic are recovered from the clothing. The necklaces, wrist cufTs, and personal property from the pants’ pockets are released with the body: the remainder of the items are submitted to the Criminal Investigation Laboratory ‘The body is of a normally-developed, light-skinned Hlispanic man whose appearance is consistent with the given age of 65 years, When nude, the body measures 64 inches in length and weighs 135 pounds (BMI: 23.2). The eyes have brown irides and the conjunctivae are pale. The orat cavity has natural teeth in fair repair and is atraumatie. The chest and back are developmentally unremarkable. The abdomen is flat. The external genitalia are of a normal, uncircumcised adult man, The extremities are symmetric and intact. The fingernails are short and well-kempt ‘The body is well preserved, unembalmed, and cold subsequent to refrigeration, Moderate symmetrical rigor mortis is present io the upper and lower extremities, neck and jaw. Lividity is faint red+ purple, fixed, and posterior IDENTIFYING MARKS AND SCARS There are innumerable monochromatic and polychromatic tattoos on most body surfaces including the sealp, oxillae, knuckles, and palms. The tattoos inelude, but are nat limited to, skulls; dragons; Chinese lettering and Asian-inspired designs; Chistian crosses; US Marine Corp logos, designs, and phrases: words and individual lettering including multiple references to Vietnam. Of note, a set of US Military dog tags with “RODRIGUES J. D.” is tattooed on the medial side ofthe left foot, ‘THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES There is no evidence of emergency resuscitation of medical therapy EVIDENCE OF INTURY ‘There are two gunshot wound of te head and unk which will be described individually below; no sequence is implied. ‘A, Gunshot wound of ead ‘The left side of the face has a gunshot entrance wound located medial to the inner cantus of the left eye, 4 inches from the top of the bead and 1 inch to the let of the midline. The % inch, round defect has 1/16 inch concentric marginal abrasion which is overlapped by a | x 3/8 inch rectangular abrasion on the lateral side of the nose and upper eye lid. Two 1/8th ineh superficial lacerations are on the upper left eyelid adjacent to the defect at 2 o'clock. The right side of the bridge of the nose has a faint superficial abrasion and the lateral side ofthe right nasal ala has a 1/8 inch superficial abrasion. There is no soot or stippling on the skin. Fragments of black and clear plastic are noted near the wound and a pair of broken black-fiamed eyeglasses are still partially om the face (as above).
