POST DISASTER INFRASTRUCTURE RE-CONSTRUCTION.

ABOUT OUR CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME

Mother Helpage is committed to rebuilding communities through redevelopment of housing, mosques, orphanages, roads and bridges so that
communities are stabilised and can start re-building their lives.
Disaster events create significant challenges for all
those affected. Individuals and communities have
many needs in the ensuing period after a major
disaster. One of the most important is that of
reinstating the built environment back to its original
pre-disaster condition through restoration and reconstruction of damaged structures.
Disasters, both natural and man-made, have been
occurring with increasing frequency in recent
decades. The cost of lives and damage to property
has been disproportionately heavy on developing

countries. The need to take action to effectively

manage post-disaster damage has been highlighted
at many major international conferences and
measures are underway in many countries.
Without your concern and support, Mother Helpage
and its collaborating partners would be unable to
continue their vital work, helping people in poorer
countries to re-build their lives. There are many ways
you can support these affected communities starting
with building homes, masjids, orphanages, roads and
bridges.

WHY SPONSOR THIS

PROGRAMME?
Mother Helpage UKs commitment to rebuilding
communities offers real support in regions that have
been affected. By re-developing housing, mosques,
orphanages, roads and bridges, communities are
ultimately able to stabilise and start re-building their
lives.

WHY IS
CONSTRUCTION
IMPORTANT?
Disasters cause a considerable amount of
damage around the world each year.
According to CRED (part of WHO) from 1994
to 2013 an average of 68,000 lives are lost
through natural disasters and they affect an
average of 218 million people each year.
The same research notes that an average
of 98,000 people are killed each year as a
result of these disasters. The data shows
that deaths are much higher in developing
countries and they are much more likely to
affect people at the lower end of the social
scale.

Disasters have a greater impact on

the built environment of developing
countries than industrialised ones. The
World Bank estimates that losses due
to natural disasters are 20 times greater
(as a percentage of GDP) in developing
countries than in the industrialised nations.
The damage to the economic and social
infrastructure usually takes a long time to
reconstruct after a disaster, causing further
suffering to the population.

PERMANENT
Mother Helpage has so far
provided more than 4,000
SHELTER HOMES
temporary and permanent
shelter homes in post disaster areas such as
Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Kashmir and Haiti. All shelter
provided by Mother Helpage follows the post disaster
rehabilitation guidelines laid down by UN policies for
internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Proper infrastructure of houses and schools is
necessary for healthy development and education
of a child. Through its construction projects, Mother
Helpage wants to offer a safe environment for
children who find themselves living with lack of proper
facilities in housing and education.
Under this programme, we construct and repair
damaged orphanages in different parts of the world
as well as refurbishing them, providing vulnerable
children with a safer & more comfortable living space.

According to UN-Habitat, 30% of the worlds urban

population live in slums. These are deplorable
conditions where people are living with lack of
access to safe water or sewage facilities, often in
overcrowded conditions and
structurally unsafe buildings
MORE THAN 4,000
or living in a situation with no
TEMPORARY AND
security of tenure.

Mosques play a continuous and active role in the

guidance of Muslim and non-Muslim communities.
Mostly used for religious teaching, a place of worship
and providing a central point for communities to
meet one another on religious occasions. However,
mosques have much more potential than this, and
can be utilised as a community centre and a place of
education.
