The Marylebone property market

The Portman Estate takes in 110 acres of Marylebone and over 500 properties.
Another 92 acres of Marylebone falls under the Howard de Walden estate. Both are
home to stunning Georgian and Edwardian properties that give the neighbourhood a
regal air. Outside of these estates are a number of more modern residential enclaves
created in the mid- to late 20th century.

A little more about Marylebone itself

Marylebone attracts a diverse selection of home movers, with the village feel
appealing especially to European buyers and families. The neighbourhood has an
interesting past and hasn't always been called Marylebone. It was originally called
Tiburn or Ty-Bourne, referring to the river that ran through the neighbourhood. The
Mary part of Marylebone comes from the medieval church St Mary's, which was built
on the banks. After a spell as hunting ground for Henry VIII, Marylebone took on a
more genteel feel and the Georgian era saw the creation of pretty squares, public
gardens and attractive housing.

The neighbourhood features two distinct hubs - Marylebone High Street - for
names including Aspinals of London, The Conran Shop, Paul Smith, Agnes B,
Anthropologie and Maje - and Marylebone Village, for the Claude Gallery, The Third
Space gym and the village's two cookery schools - Divertimenti and La Cucina
Caldesi - among other independent and boutique brands. Marylebone's village feel
is enhanced by its weekly farmers' market, which takes place every Sunday at the
Cramer Street car park. Also popular with residents is Cabbages and Frocks - a
weekly market supplying both fresh vegetables and designer clothing, held in the
grounds of St Marylebone Parish Church every Saturday. For celebrity spotting,
head to Chiltern Firehouse - the Marylebone restaurant where the world's A-listers
fight over for a table.
