Resumen
El presente artculo explora las definiciones ofrecidas por HENRY MINTZBERG sobre estrategia,
as como las escuelas que el autor ha identificado. Posteriormente, el documento se orienta a
identificar nichos de investigacin al cruzar las definiciones de MINTZBERG con el concepto de
distancia de poder empleado por HOFSTEDE.

Abstract
The present article explores the definitions offered by HENRY MINTZBERG related to strategy, as
well as the schools that the author has identified. Afterward, some research niches are identified in
the strategy field, via crossing the definitions of MINTZBERG with the concept of power distance
used by HOFSTEDE.

Presentacin
HENRY MINTZBERG es quizs el autor mas destacado en relacin al proceso de esclarecimiento
del concepto de estrategia. Este autor comienza por aclarar que la naturaleza humana insiste en la
definicin de conceptos y en este sentido, realiza un aporte destacado al percatarse y sealar que la
palabra estrategia ha sido empleada en diferentes formas. De all, propone varias definiciones para
esclarecer alcances tanto para ejecutivos como para investigadores.
MINTZBERG (MINTZBERG, 1987a, 1987b, 1990, 1994, 1997, 2001 Y MINTZBERG &
LAMPEL, 1999) precisa que al interior del problema de la estrategia, algunos planes, intenciones o
maniobras pueden ser intencionalmente pretendidos, de forma que el resultado de estas pretensiones
pueda ser realizado o no. Esta primera aproximacin conduce a reflexionar sobre la existencia de
estrategias pretendidas y estrategias realizadas, de donde MINTZBERG deduce que las estrategias
pretendidas pueden o no ser estrategias realizadas, y que las estrategias realizadas pueden o no ser
estrategias pretendidas.
Desde la nocin de estrategia realizada, el autor observa que existen estrategias que fueron
realizadas y pretendidas, con lo cual existe un esfuerzo deliberado en la mente del estratega para
concebir y ejecutar intencionadamente sus iniciativas. Por otra parte, puede tambin darse la
situacin de estrategias realizadas que no fueron pretendidas, las cuales surgieron de forma
espontnea, o como producto del seguimiento de patrones desarrollados en la ausencia de
intenciones (o a pesar de ellas), denominadas emergentes.

A continuacin se desarrollan dos esfuerzos por clasificar los enfoques de investigacin en el rea
de direccin estratgica, apoyados en los trabajos de MINTZBERG y WHITTINGTON, 1993.
En el grfico siguiente, se propone una identificacin de enfoques, con base en los criterios de
divergencia de intereses/ intencionalidad de los procesos de conformacin de la estrategia. El
cuadro muestra una cobertura extendida en mltiples reas de investigacin.

Por otra parte, existe un nicho en la estrategia como plan para sistemas (sociedades, territorios u
organizaciones) en los cuales la distancia de poder es baja y existen agentes homogneos en el
sentido de los modelos neoclsicos usuales, con agentes con poderes de negociacin similares, en
los cuales es posible perfeccionar enfoques de redes y de integracin sistmica.
