Description: Your child will use a small plastic bag containing “Lucky Charms” cereal
to answer questions and write greater than and less than number sentences.

Learning Objectives:

• Objective #1 Your child will sort the cereal according to their own rule
• Objective #2 Explain their sorting to you
• Objective #3 Use the pieces of cereal to find answers to your questions

Materials needed:

• Computer with internet access


• Printer
• Paper
• Pen or pencil

Activity: Lucky Charms Math

Directions: Give your child a plastic bag containing “Lucky Charms” cereal; ask him not
to eat any yet. Ask your child to sort the cereal into groups on a paper towel. Ask the
child to explain how the cereal was sorted. Your child should use the “Lucky Charms” to
answer the following questions.

1. Names each of the shapes in you bag of “Lucky Charms”

2. Which cereal shape has the least amount of pieces?

3. Which cereal shape has to most pieces?

4. How pieces do you have altogether?

5. Ask your child to combine two groups of cereal pieces in order to find the total

number all together.

6. Now using your child’s charms ask him to show you how to find the difference

(subtract) between two of his groups of “Lucky Charms”.


7. Continue with the addition and subtraction word problems until your child gets
tired of doing it. Then let him/her eat the cereal as a snack.

8. If you could add another shape to the “Lucky Charms” cereal, what shape would

you like? Draw and color a picture of it below.
