TheFilipinovaluesystemorFilipinovaluesreferstothesetofvaluesorthevaluesystemthatamajority
oftheFilipinohavehistoricallyheldimportantintheirlives.ThisPhilippinevaluesystemincludestheir
ownuniqueassemblageofconsistentideologies,moralcodes,ethicalpractices,etiquette,andculturaland
personalvaluesthatarepromotedbytheirsociety.Aswithanysocietythough,thevaluesthatanindividual
holdssacredcandifferonthebasisofreligion,upbringingandotherfactors.
Asageneraldescription,thedistinctvaluesystemofFilipinosisrootedprimarilyinpersonalalliance
systems,especiallythosebasedinkinship,obligation,friendship,religion(particularlyChristianity),and
commercialrelationships.[1]

Philosophicalbasis
Filipinovaluesare,forthemostpart,centeredatmaintainingsocialharmony,motivatedprimarilybythe
desiretobeacceptedwithinagroup.Themainsanctionagainstdivergingfromthesevaluesarethe
conceptsof"Hiya",roughlytranslatedas'asenseofshame',and"Amorpropio"or'selfesteem'.[2]Social
approval,acceptancebyagroup,andbelongingtoagrouparemajorconcerns.Caringaboutwhatothers
willthink,sayordo,arestronginfluencesonsocialbehavioramongFilipinos.[3]
AccordingtotheanthropologistLeonardoMercado,theFilipinoworldviewisbasically'nondualistic'.
BasedonhislinguisticanalysesofFilipinovaluetermslikeloob(Cebuanobuot),heconcludesthat
Filipinosdesireharmony,notonlyininterpersonalrelationships,butalsowithnatureandreligion,while
stillremainingnondichotomous.[4]

FlorentinoTimbreza,aculturalphilosopher,concludesinhisbookPilosopiyangPilipino(1982)that
Filipinovaluesarebasedonthesignificanceoftheworldtoman.Lifeexperiencesdictatethephilosophyof
theFilipino,augmentedbyothersourceslikeproverbs,folksayings,folktales,andthelike.[4]

ModelsoftheFilipinovalues
F.LandaJocanoidentifiedtwomodelsoftheFilipinovaluesystem.Thefirstistheexogenousmodelor
theforeignmodel,whilethesecondistheindigenousmodelorthetraditionalmodel.Theforeignmodel
isdescribedtobea"legalandformal"model.Theindigenousmodelisdescribedasa"traditionalandnon
formal"modelorguidebutisdeeplyembeddedinthesubconsciousoftheFilipinos.[3]
TheforeignmodelwasinheritedbyFilipinosfromWesterncultures,particularlyfromtheSpaniardsand
theAmericans.Anexampleofaforeignorexogenousinfluenceisbureaucracyexhibitedinthegovernment

Basedonstudies,surveys,opinions,anecdotes,andotherliteraturesmadebyexpertsandresearchersin
relationtoFilipinosocialvaluesorFilipinocorevalues,alongwiththeFilipinocharacterorFilipino
identityofapersonoranindividualknownastheFilipino,theFilipinovaluesystemarefoundtopossess
inherentkeyelements.Amongthemareoptimismaboutthefuture,pessimismwithregardstopresent
situationsandevents,theconcernandcareforotherpeople,theexistenceoffriendshipandfriendliness,the
habitofbeinghospitable,religiousnature,respectfulnesstoselfandothers,respectforthefemalemembers
ofsociety,thefearofGod,andabhorrenceofactsofcheatingandthievery.[5]
ThecorevaluesofFilipinosspecificallyupholdsthefollowingitems:solidarityofthefamilyunit,security
ofthePhilippineeconomy,orientationtosmallgroups,personalism,theconceptsof"loob"or"kalooban"
(meaning"whatsinsidetheself",the"innerself",orthe"actualpersonalfeelingsoftheself"),existence
andmaintenanceofsmoothinterpersonalrelationships,andthesensingofthefeelingsorneedsofothers
(knownaspakikiramdam).Inalargerpicture,thesevaluesaregroupedintogeneralclustersor
"macroclusters":namely,therelationshipcluster,thesocialcluster,thelivelihoodcluster,theinwardness
cluster,andtheoptimismcluster.[5]

Genderspecificvalues
Inrelationtoparenthood,bearingmaleandfemalechildrendependsonthepreferencesoftheparentsbased
ontheexpectedrolesthateachgenderwouldassumeoncegrownup.Bothgendersareexpectedtobecome
responsiblemembersofthefamilyandtheirsociety.WomeninthePhilippinesareexpectedtobecome
caringandnurturingmothersfortheirownchildren.[6]
FemaleFilipinosarealsoexpectedtolendahandinhouseholdwork.Theyareevenanticipatedtooffer
assistanceafterbeingmarried.Ontheotherhand,Filipinomenareexpectedtoassumetheroleofbecoming
theprimarysourceofincomeandfinancialsupportofhisfamily.[6]
