OPEN EVENING 2015
The College had an amazing turnout to the Open Evening yesterday. The hall was packed to capacity for yet
another lovely evening.
In the Main Hall, Ms Hughes gave an address emphasising the distinctive nature of the College; one that has a
unique culture and climate, where children experience an excellent education and one that is grounded in
tradition and faith. She said whilst there are many very good schools around, there is none like St. Bedes.
Ms Hughes also highlighted the opportunities available to the pupils who attend St. Bedes both academically and
through the co-curricular programmes. She talked about the appointment of a new Head of Rugby and Sports
Coach which will enhance and enrich that aspect of life at St. Bedes, explaining that it is our ambition to become
a Centre of Excellence for Rugby.
Parents and their children then had the opportunity of visiting all areas of the College, including our Sixth Form
block, to see work in the range of subjects offered. They were very complimentary about the environment, the
overall level of resourcing and the articulate and engaging pupils.
Students who helped on the evening were thanked by Ms Hughes and they each received a small reward for
giving of their time in this generous manner. A number of visitors were overwhelmed with the pride the children
had for their school, their enthusiasm and confidence.
Additional Information forms for prospective Year 7 pupils must arrive in College by 31st October 2015. Parents
must also have submitted the Common Application Form to their local authority by that date.

COMMUNITY CORNER
We were delighted to hear last
week that year 11 pupil Alicia
Dias spent the whole summer
holidays volunteering at St.
Barnabas in Portishead.
St. Barnabas is a day centre
that looks after children with
disabilities such as Down's
Syndrome and Autism. Alicia
committed to working 4 days each week
throughout the summer and is now working
Saturdays during term time. Well done Alicia for
giving up your time generously to help others.
ART TRIP TO LONDON
On Tuesday 15th September, students from Year 10, 12 and
13, along with their teachers, embarked on a trip to The
National Gallery and Portrait Gallery in London. As well as
being an unforgettable day out, the trip also provided
educational resources for the pupils to use in preparation
for their important exams.
In The Portrait Gallery, we visited the BP Portrait Award
exhibition which demonstrated a wide range of different
styles from which that we could take inspiration. We were
instructed to complete transcriptions of at least three
different paintings which we would later present as an
assessed piece of work. On display in The National Gallery
were several of the most famous works of art in the world
including The Water-Lily Pond by Claude Monet and
Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh. The different
techniques, styles and materials shown in the gallery
offered much inspiration to the pupils as well as teaching
them about good compositions, tone, colours, etc.

SPIKE ISLAND EXHIBITION

As part of the continued enrichment programme for
Art students at St. Bedes, last week, sixth formers
visited Spike Island Exhibition Space and Studios.
Students participated in a workshop, which was
organised by Articulate. Articulate encourages the
analysis of Art and Design pieces and the stimulation
of students' interest and understanding of art. The students were asked to analyse the
work of an artist, work in a team with other students from Bristol, and present their
findings in front of the Artist. This experience has most definitely prepared them for the
next stage, particularly in regard to interview situations where they will be asked about
both their own work and the work of others.
